Micro-partitioning principles

Size and share of a micro-partition is in principal defined by the administrator through two parameters:

Minimum Partition size

Increments of 1/100

 Partition share (weight)

 Minimum assignable capacity of

1/10th of a processor, additional

increments of 1/100 processor

 Shared processor pool

Allows the Hypervisor to dispatch the

partitions over several

intervals/physical CPU’s

 Min/Desired/Maximum

What Escala can do:

Today : Distributed Many distributed servers badly utilized

 Distributed storage everywhere

 Networking gear (cables, routers, hubs)

Towards a complete IT infrastructure in a box

Tomorrow : Virtualized Virtual servers in a big box with much higher

utilization rates

 Virtual storage connected to SAN

 Virtual networking between partitions

Page 44: Apresentacao Escala Risc Unitech-bull

Page 44

© Bull 2004

Complete infrastructure in a box:

Greatly reduce the number of servers

Greatly reduce adapters, switches, cables and disks

Reduce floor space and power consumption

Reduce management complexity and costs

Introduce resource sharing to fulfill SLA’s

Increase availability and manageability
