NEWS FROM DEPARTMENTS
The Pukaki Education Award
Tēnā koutou katoa, my name is Tangaroa Yorke, and I was chosen this year as a representative for Rotorua Lakes High School to receive the Pukaki Education Award for 2015. I was selected to receive the Pukaki Education Award because I have shown leadership in Tikanga Māori at my school throughout the year in 2014. As a part of this award, I was fortunate to travel to Wellington to meet His Excellency, the Governor General, Sir Jerry Mataparae (we are in the picture on the right). Report On Tuesday the 10th of February 2015, a group of us travelled down to Wellington by plane. I was accompanied by Kuia and Kaumātua of Ngāti Whakaue, Whaea Sonia Cooper, Matua Monty Morrison, and Whaea Norma Sturley. In our group, there was also one student representative from each Rotorua school. So the day started early in the morning when we flew down to Wellington from Rotorua, arriving at 7:30am. Firstly, we were escorted to the Reserve Bank of New Zealand on our bus trip from the airport. At the bank, we were welcomed in by a pohiri, followed by breakfast. Here we learnt about the history of money from the past, present and future. We also learnt that the very first coin that was made in New Zealand was very, very small. The next stop on our journey was Government House. Exploring the Governor General’s house was magnificent
and breath-taking. There was a lot of gold in Sir Jerry Mataparae’s home! At the Governor General’s residence, the new Anzac commemorative coin was launched. This year, the Pukaki Education Award recipients were lucky enough to receive one of these coins which acknowledge the Anzacs. Receiving the coin from Sir Jerry Mataparae was also a real honour and a privilege for me, especially as we were one of the first group of students and people in the whole of New Zealand to receive the Anzac commemorative coin. The coin has 3 colours, black, silver, and white, this is the first coin to have three colours. Later on that day we returned to the Reserve Bank of New Zealand to have lunch. During our lunch we discussed our
career and future plans and we even got the chance to hold one million dollars! As the day continued on, we all walked to Parliament House where we took some cool selfies there! When we went into Parliament House, we had to put our stuff in this box for security reasons and we got our things back at the end of our time there. In parliament, we saw all sorts of things, like this Waitangi room which was a big room that was green and it was really fun. During our time, we walked downstairs and we met the Prime Minister John Key. That was awesome! I felt pretty famous myself in that moment. The next stop on our trip was Te Papa Museum. It was amazing and we had some really cool experiences there. Like we were rolling this ball with water on it. At Te Papa, we also saw different types of taiaha and different types of kākahu (clothing) from back in the old days. Some of the kākahu had dog fur, goat fur as well as bird feathers. Seeing the kākahu got me thinking about how things are different now to those times. Later on that day we went to this amazing lookout at the top of Mount Victoria – it was stunning. The sea was shining, I was shining and Whaea Sonia was also shining! At Mount Victoria, we had some more photos taken and then we were on our way back to the Wellington Airport to fly back to Rotorua. Travelling on the plane was a great experience as it was my first time ever! When we were in the air on our way home, I was just thinking about how privileged I am. I have learnt a lot from this experience and from some of my own mistakes and all of the things I have learnt so far. Overall, it was an amazing journey for myself and the others. I want to thank Mr Walker, Whaea Sonia, Whaea Tania and Ngāti Whakaue for this trip of a lifetime. I will never ever forget it. Nō reira, he mihi nui tēnei ki a koutou katoa. Tangaroa Yorke.
