CHAPLAIN’S MESSAGE As you may be aware, Lady Doreen is in Long Term Care for Alzheimer’s Dementia. The facility where she resides went on strike last month and I got thrust into the national media as a spokesperson with regards not only to the strike but that she has to move by January 20th, 2014 as the facility where she lives is discontinuing the AHS supported beds. I received many, many calls from a lot of loved ones that are affected by the bed closures but also by issues pertaining to the care their family members are receiving in other facilities across Canada. One interesting situation that kept developing is that the cost of care is being manipulated and the most vulnerable members of our society are being taken advantage of. For example, one lady is paying $700 more than her neighbour for the identical suite. Another is paying $400 to have her blood pressure checked weekly which is free in most facilities. And yet another is paying $700 to have her eye drops administered daily. I am not saying there shouldn’t be a charge on the latter but my feeling is this charge is excessive and I question why it isn’t covered under health care / insurance. What I am asking, no begging, is that if you do have family members in a seniors residence or LTC that you become aware of their financial affairs. In every case I heard about, the seniors have not told their loved ones and do not want to be a burden. Also, I have applied and been accepted as a volunteer at the 2013 Shriners Hospital for Children on October 14 to 20th in Las Vegas. It may surprise you to know that we have two members in senior administrative positions at this prestigious event. Illustrious Sir Edward Jakubowsky is in charge of the Ambassadors and Noble Richard Sigurdson is in charge of Corporate Hospitality at the Hill. I am pretty sure there are not too many Shrine Centers outside of Nevada that have two Chairmen on the committees. Why not consider volunteering as well? If you have any questions contact either of these Nobles or myself. In the Light of Grace Noble R Dean Cowan Chaplain 2013

June 6, 2013 has been designated “Shriners International Day”.

Many Shrine Centres have planned special events to mark the day. All clubs and units are encouraged to identify events to mark this special day

EVENTS COMMITTEE UPDATE Hello everyone from your Events committee. We just want to thank you all for your great support last year…we could not have done it without all of you. We would ask now for all the Units and Clubs to assist us again this year and our first event is Swing into Spring (see the poster in this issue) with some donations of door prizes. These should be in the $20 to $30 range and you can contact Garry Saunders at 403-238-3238 to let us know or ask about this. Please make sure that your Unit or Club is represented at the Events Committee meetings so you are better informed. Thanks Garry Saunders Events Committee Chairman TIN LIZZIE CORPS Hello Nobles! As spring arrives we are planning the parade and BBQ season. As always our year will begin on May 20th at the High River parade. We are looking forward to visiting many other communities to spread some Shrine happiness. If you are coming out to the Stated Business meeting on April 11th, be sure to come early to have a great BBQ steak dinner. Please call Pat to let her know, as we need to know how many steaks to cook. I’d like to congratulate one of our Special Ladies, Joan Pruett on her appointment as Queen of Sakkara Temple. Keep your eyes open for our upcoming Meat Sale. Fraternally, Rob Sceviour Commander

AL AZHAR LONG TERM PLAN UPDATE

In 2011, your Divan proposed a Long Term Plan that was approved by the Nobility. For your information, here is an update on actions taken or in progress Membership & Involvement Your Membership Committee is developing plans to increase candidates and reduce demits and suspensions. Membership involvement in the East West Shrine Hockey Challenge was fantastic and membership involvement in other “shrine events” continues to improve. While Al Azhar suffered a net loss last, it was significantly less than 2011. Membership needs to be every Noble’s top priority. Get a Noble! Building & Grounds A number of improvements have been made to your buildings and grounds; the most noticeable being the replacement of carpeting on the main floor. The Buildings and Grounds Committee has and will be identifying other necessary improvement this year. All improvements are aimed at improving the “appeal” of your facility to you and to the public at large to increase facility revenue.

Al Azhar has engaged SAIT marketing students to develop a “marketing analysis” of your facility and recommend methods of increasing its usage. The SAIT students will present their recommendation in late April to the Divan. Your facility did have a modest profit in 2012. Public Exposure & Recognition The Shrine Hockey Challenge gave Al Azhar and “the world’s greatest philanthropy” great exposure in the Calgary area. Another Shrine Hockey Challenge is already in the planning stages for this Fall. In 2012, Al Azhar started “mail-outs” to many Northwest Calgary Community Associations to make them aware of the “open” events at the Shrine Centre. This will continue in 2013. Our participation in area parades continues to be a great way of promoting Shriners and our hospital system and all Clubs and Units are to be congratulated for their participation. The Calgary Stampede Parades continues to be one of our best promotion vehicles. Hosting PNSA 2013 in Lethbridge will go a long way in increasing public awareness in the Lethbridge area. Our Philanthropy Al Azhar’s support of the SHC Canada and the Patient Transportation Fund continued to be strong in 2012 with approximately $100,000 raised. Al Azhar is already off to a great start in 2013 judging from presentations at the Potentate’s evening and Al Azhar’s proceeds from the Shrine Hockey Challenge. Administrative Structure Some preliminary work was started in 2012 to “rationalize” our administrative structure over the long term. Strength of Units/Clubs Many of our clubs and units maintained their strength in 2012 and some even got stronger. The focus in 2013 must be to find ways of helping our weaker clubs and units.

MEMBERSHIP COMMITTEE UPDATE Hello fellow Noble or Lady reading this entry in the Fez Sez. I could speak to you about the need for more members or that you should do this or that to attract new members. Instead I ask you to enjoy yourself and express the pride you have in being a part of the Shriners. Tell people about what we do; when you are out with friends or family, at lodge or speaking to someone from the general public. By sharing who we are and what we do, we unknowingly inspire others to explore new paths in their life.

There are many upcoming opportunities to which you can invite friends, family members and Brothers from Lodge. We have ‘Swing into Spring’, Movie nights at the Shrine, the Show and Shrine Car Show, Parades, 300 Club, Summer Festivals and many other events to participate in.

I understand not everyone wants to go knocking on doors or feeling like a salesperson. By sharing the fun you have with those people around you, they become your ‘sales force’. The average person knows around 250 people, if each of those people know 250 people, that network grows quite quickly. Tap into it, be proud, share with people what you do and how much you enjoy your Club or Unit.

The membership committee has a goal of promoting Al Azhar Shriners and Shriners International in Southern AB. If membership is a passion of yours or you are tired of hearing the same complaint about needing more members… then be proud of what you do and share it with others. What could your club or unit do with 5 new members? 10 New members? Think on it, just don’t think too long. Action is key, small consistent effort will go a long way to improving Al Azhar!

Looking forward to spring and a little less snow,

Kurtis Frederick – Membership 2013, working with some of the best Shriners… you should be here with us! Next meeting April 11th, 2013, Oasis club 6pm!

WANTED – LODGE AMBASSADORS

Many Shrine Centres have implemented a “Lodge Ambassador” program. The purpose of the program is to ensure that Lodge members are aware of upcoming Shrine events that are open to the public or Master Masons. Al Azhar would like to implement such a program in Southern Alberta If you are interested in becoming a “Lodge Ambassador” for your Lodge, contact Brian Shimmons. The plan is to send out information on Shrine events to each Lodge Ambassador on a regular basis. H: 403-949-4490 C: 403-305-1450 E: [email protected]

RUTTERS NEWS The Rutters had a great turnout for their annual Curling Tournament this year. There were only a few Shrine teams and many teams from different walks of life so we had a great opportunity to let everyone know about our unit in particular and the Shrine in general. Lots of great prizes so a special thanks goes out to the many members that donated to this great event. It has helped to keep teams coming back each year. The Mounted Patrol Unit are claiming they are all now going into assisted care homes and no longer have the physical ability to do such a physical sport as curling. That seems to be a better excuse than the one used last year by a Mounted Patrol team to take a technical win over a Rutter’s team being supported by a 12 year old son who had never curled before. Otherwise, the Mounted Patrol team would never have won the game (they never won the pool). But fortunately, as the Mounted Patrol never showed up this year, good sportsmanship abounded and fun was had by all. So, as usual, the Rutter teams came out on top, winning the A and B pools. Special mention to the SILF’s, the elite Rutter’s team that won the A pool event. In honour of the event, the Rutters are going to be obtaining a trophy that is sure to be

the biggest one in the Oasis Lounge, in honour of the event and its long standing success. As we have not kept accurate records to date on past winners, and as this is about looking forward to many more years of fun, the first name on this trophy will be the Rutter’s – SILF’s. Our next event will be some sort of participation in the Stampede Seven’s Rugby tournament in July. Our current Rameses, Derrik Telford, has promised us a terrific fund raising and public awareness event for the Rutters at this tournament and we are all looking forward to see what Noble Telford has in store. Dues for the Rutters are $30 a person and are currently due. Please contact Noble Telford to pay your dues and if you are interested in becoming a new member. He will tell you about our meeting dates and times. Our next one is projected to be March 17, 2013. Noble Telford’s e-mail is [email protected] and his mobile number is (403) 999-6938.

AIR CORPS NEWS Spring is almost here and we are getting our planes ready for another season of fun. We will be participating in most of the parades that we did last year. New this year, we will be going to the 604 cadet tattoo at the Max Bell on May the 4th for a show, as we on July 1 we will be going to Airdrie and on July 13th and 14th we will be at the Airdrie Air Show. PNSA in Lethbridge we will be there. I am heading up transportation for PNSA 2013 in Lethbridge and I need drivers for the minivans to run people around. If you can help please call me personally. We are planning a Prop Club Dinner for Saturday October the 26th at the Calgary Tower… details to follow. This is my 4th term as Captain of the Air Corps… man time travels when you are having fun Fraternally Ron Down - Captain

VINTAGE CAR CLUB NEWS On Feb 26th the presentation of the Queens Diamond Jubilee Medal took place at the Delta Hotel. This event involved medals being decorated on 13 Calgary Firefighters. The Calgary Fire Dept. hosted the event and Alberta Fire Commissioner Trent West presented the awards. It came as a surprise to me when my Nephew Jarrett Silliker who is a firefighter with Foothills Fire Dept. submitted my name for the award. When my name was called to come forward and be decorated, Jarrett also joined me and the presentation was made by the Commissioner. But it was not over. The medal was removed, handed to Jarrett and then he pinned the medal on me for a second time which was very special for him to be a part of the process. Lady Linda and I are very pleased to have been a part of this special occasion. (See p11) One other member who is also a Shriner and Firefighter to receive the award was Noble Larry Fisher. And yes I still have my dress uniform which felt a little odd after all these years of not wearing it once retired but it sure brings back memories, and it fits. So now we are into yet a new year and can’t wait for the snow to be gone so we can roll out our vintage cars to do it all once again. To kick off the season one vehicle was entered in the World of Wheels Car Show by Noble Ken Aylesworth who won Best in Class for the 49 Woody Ford wagon. And just to let you know if you’re looking to buy a car and join the AAVCC Ken told me it’s for sale. Also at the car show I found Noble Ronald Moore who does appraisals for those wishing to find out what that old beautiful car of yours is worth. So now we await the return of our snow bird members who are spread out all over the country mostly state side and they are on their way back north. Our first meeting will take place on the March 19th if you would care to join us; we meet at the Mounted Patrol Club House at 7PM. Noble Frank Silliker

MOUNTED PATROL NEWS On November 17th, 2012 the Al Azhar Mounted Patrol joined eight other units for a joint installation ceremony. An evening of dinner and dancing was enjoyed by all. The Mounted Patrol installed the following members: President Noble Ken Weller Captain Noble Jim Cascadden 1st Lieutenant Noble David Pope 2nd Lieutenant Noble Glen Hacke Treasurer Noble Warren Nelson PP Secretary Noble Gary Van Exan On December 12, 2012 the AMP held their annual Christmas Wine and Cheese Party at the Club House, hosted by Noble President Ken Weller and Lady Lorraine. The weather co-operated and this event was well attended by Nobles and their ladies. January 2013 saw the Mounted Patrol begin conditioning exercises in preparation of an anticipated busy ride season. Regular ride practices will begin in April. We were all saddened to learn of the passing of long-time Mounted Patrol member, Wayne Curtis Fox on January 16, 2013, at the age of 62. Wayne joined the AMP as a ride member in 1987. He was Unit President in 1993 and President of the International Shrine Horse Patrols in 2001. In 2003 Wayne was made INSHP Shriner of the Year. Wayne retired from the Calgary Fire Department in 2005 after 33 years of service. Wayne grew up on the family farm east of Crossfield. He is survived by his mother Marjorie Fox and his brother Bryan (Judy) Fox as well as many nieces and nephews and their families. Wayne will be missed by all whose path he crossed. On February 17th, 2013 the AMP held a Family Day BBQ and family get together. Delicious BBQ’d hamburgers and hot dogs with all the trimmings were served to our many guests, followed by toboggan rides (pulled by an ATV), skating and other outdoor activities on the Lake. We were pleased to see so many children in attendance. All-in-all a fun day was had by all. A Jiggs Dinner is planned for March 16, 2013 in celebration of St. Patrick’s Day. CLOWNS NEWS Hi everyone from the Clown Unit, we are going to try to get an article in each of the Fez Sezs this year to let you know what we have done and are going to do. So far this year we recuperated from our Xmas rush of move-outs, then participated in that great event at the Saddledome. The East West Challenge game was a great success and our photo booth brought in about $300.00 for the cause. We had a great time doing this and the skits for the audience and we will sure be the next year as well. since then we have done one move out at Cardel place for Family Day where we did balloons for about 700 children of all ages. Now for those that might be interested we will be putting on a Pocket Magic and clown stuff seminar on April 28 at the Shrine Centre. This will be from 1:00pm to 4:00pm and is open to all interested persons at a cost of $10.00 per head. Please contact Phil Lunn or Kim Parkyn of the Clowns so that you can be registered in advance of the seminar. We are looking forward to a great season of parades this summer and, of course, the PNSA in Lethbridge in July. Here’s a little humour for this month; A Blonde joke you've never heard before “After becoming very frustrated with the attitude of one of the shopkeepers, the young blonde declared, 'Well, then, maybe I'll just go out and catch my own alligator and get a pair of alligator shoes for free!' The shopkeeper replied with a sly smile, 'Well, little lady, why don't you go give it a try?' The blonde headed off to the swamp, determined to catch an alligator. Later in the day, the shopkeeper was driving home, and spotted the young woman standing waist deep in the murky water, shotgun in hand. He saw a huge 9-foot gator swimming --------------à

rapidly toward her. With lightning reflexes, the blond took aim, shot the creature and hauled it up onto the slippery bank. Nearby were 7 more dead gators all lying belly up. The shopkeeper watched in amazement as the blond struggled with the gator. Then, rolling her eyes, she screamed in frustration ... "Sonofagun!! THIS ONE'S BAREFOOT, TOO!" WILD ROSE SC NEWS The Wild Rose Shrine Club has been busy planning our 2013 year. Under the direction of President Ken Campbell and his executive, our meetings have produced a series of goals and objectives for the parade season, fund raising and social events. We eagerly await the results of the casino held in late December. We have added new members and again await the parade schedule and are looking forward to appearances with the wee busses. A most positive note is the news Past Potentate Larry McCook is returning to form and will be directing us this summer on the parades routes. We wish to send our thoughts and wishes -----------------------à cont’d p15
