The ups and downs of our emotional life depend a great deal on our past or present surroundings. We are happy, sad, angry, bored, excited, depressed, loving, caring, hateful, or vengeful because of what happened long ago or what is happening now. The ups and downs of our spiritual lives depend on our obedience - that is, our attentive listening - to the movements of the Spirit of God within us. Without this listening our spiritual life eventually becomes subject to the windswept waves of our emotions. I think of how this applies to our weekly reunion groups. My suspicion is that many reunion groups will quickly move to an emotional focus characterized by the question, (and accompanying response) “how has your week been?” The question easily leads to talk about the ups and downs of our week focused on our particular circumstances. Emmaus (and the whole walk of faith) is designed to move us beyond our ‘circumstances’ to our walk with Christ no matter what our circumstances may be. So our conversation would be focused on how we experienced Christ’s presence in the joy (closest to Christ) or difficulty (discipleship denied) of each day rather than whether any encounter turned out well or not. Our 4th day conversation, particularly in reunion groups, is designed to be about who we are, and who’s we are, not about what we do. It is a tall task; it requires us to battle the common tendency in our culture. It is a 4th day challenge. So In your next reunion group I challenge you to say nothing about your ‘circumstances’ and say nothing about what you have ‘been doing’ and nothing about whether the things you are doing went well or not. But only talk about how the ‘attentive listening-to the movement of the Spirit of God’ within you has been going. It will be hard, but it leads us truly to the Peace that surpasses all understanding, all circumstance. A Note from our Community Lay Director

One of my favorite writers and thinkers is Henri Nouwen. His books and reflections still challenge and bless me though he is in the church triumphant. Nouwen’s reflection on “The Dynamics of the Spiritual Life” is particularlypoignant for 4th day communities.

Our emotional lives and our spiritual lives have different dynamics.

But only talk about how the ‘attentive listening-to the movement of the Spirit of God’ within you has been going. An Emmaus Challenge From Brother RexHello my brothers and sisters in Christ!

For those of you who know me, you’re aware that I’ve been away on “vacation” for the past 7 years. For those of you who don’t know me, I look forward to getting to know you when I’m released from prison on a charge that I did not commit. I keep you all in my prayers every day and also thank you for your constant prayers for me. I am eligible for parole in August and pray that God determines that it is my time to be released, as I have lots of His work to do out in the “free” world.

Regardless, I have a loving challenge to each of you, my Emmaus brothers and sisters, and it’s simply to make it a priority for each of you to sponsor just ONE pilgrim per year! It’s easy to get complacent and fall off on our “fishing” for upcoming Walks. But we all know how important it is, and I’m aware that recent Walks have not been full. Hey look, I’ve been able to sponsor one pilgrim a year from prison, and if I can do it from here, you certainly can too! Remember, the Lord is counting on you! Thanks.

Your Brother in Christ, Rex Crowder

How can I help?

The aim of a sponsor should not be “to get all my friends to go,” to fill up the weekend, to fix people’s problems,

or to reproduce one’s own religious experience in others. Rather, the aim of the sponsor is to bring sprititual

revitalization to Christians who will, in turn, bring new life and vision to the work of the church in the

congregation, home, workplace, and community. The aim of sponsorship is to build up the body of Christ.Excerpted with permission from The Upper Room Handbook on Emmaus by Stephen D. Bryant. Copyright 1989 by The Upper Room.

Sponsorship is an act of love for God,

for the participants, for the Emmaus

Community, and for the church. It is

a demonstration of Agape love. It is

making oneself an instrument of grace.

The Aim of Sponsorship

Walk Agape Needed!

Please continue to save your books for the book table on the Walk.

For those of you that have been on a Walk in the last couple of years, you know how bad the cafeteria food has gotten!

So your food agape is needed now more than ever for the conference room. Fruit, Meat/Cheese & Vegetable Trays are wonderful. Homemade cookies, brownies, rice krispie treats, etc hit that afternoon sweet spot!

If sponsoring someone, please bring their favorites!

That is exactly what happened with a mission team of 12 from North Shore United Methodist Church in Canyon Lake as they embarked on a recent trip to the Dominican Republic to work with a ministry called Go MAD (Go Make a Difference) to help combat human trafficking. Go MAD works in four villages primarily through their schools and children’s clinics and outreach programs in the fight against slave labor and sex trafficking.

Kairos Prison Ministry” . . . I was in prison and you came to visit me.” Matthew 25:36

Hays Praise members are serving on three Spring 2017 Kairos Weekends. The first was at the men’s maximum security Hughes unit on March 2-5. The second is this month at the women’s maximum security Lane Murray unit on April 26-29 and the third is at the men’s maximum security Connally Unit on April 27-30.

Kairos has been bringing the love of Christ to our incarcerated brothers and sisters worldwide for 40 years, building Christian community in the prison, reducing recidivism, and giving our incarcerated sisters and brothers in white new hope. For more information about Kairos, go to the Kairos of Texas website, kairostexas.org.

Team formation for three Fall Kairos Weekends, at Hughes (September 28-October 1), Lane Murray (October 25-28), and Connally (November 1-4), will begin soon. Maria Sharp of Hays Praise will be leading the Lane Murray Kairos. We will be seeking volunteers to serve on Kairos teams for all three Weekends. If you have questions about Hughes Kairos or may want to join the Hughes team, contact Dave Sutherland at [email protected] or 512-940-7244. If you have questions about or may want to join the Lane Murray team, contact Maria Sharp at [email protected] or 512-853-0227. If you have questions about or may want to join the Connally team, contact Walter Mott at [email protected] or 512-738-1749. Thanks, Dave

Get To Know Your Board Members With the addition of Canyon Lake, Johnson City and Blanco, the Hays Praise community is growing by leaps and bounds. Here’s a short biography and picture of the board members to help you get better aquainted!

Dripping Springs/DriftwoodMy name is Don Cawood, and I am one of the Hays Praise Board Reps for Dripping Springs/Driftwood communities. I was a pilgrim on Walk 1325 in October 2006. Since then, I have worked many Walks in all layperson roles and was Lay Director for Walk 1825 in February 2016. This is my first year on the Board and have enjoyed working to make Hays Praise better. When I’m not doing Emmaus work, I lead worship at my church, DSUMC, and spend time with my family.

Canyon Lake/North ShoreMy name is Nancy Reinecke. I was a pilgrim on Walk 531 in July 1996 at Omega Center in Boerne. After serving on several Walks, I was a Lay Director on Walk 1820 in December 2015. I have enjoyed serving as Canyon Lake’s Board Rep for the past two years. I work full time at Pedernales Electric Cooperative as a Member Services Representative. I enjoy doing cross stitch and spending time with my family.

GrueneMy name is Patsy Greiner. I serve as the Gruene Board Rep. My pilgrim Walk was 155 at Mount Wesley in 1989. The community of saints who are part of my life since that Walk are one of the greatest blessings of my life. What joy you all bring to me! Many Walks have enriched my relationship with God, and I served as Lay Director for Walk 1687 in December 2012. My retirement is spent enjoying grandchildren (9 grandsons and 2 granddaughters) and reading. My husband and I also like to take our camper out on the open road to soak in the wonders of our great country.

HP RegistrarMy name is Tricia Schneider, and I serve as the Registrar for the Hays Praise Emmaus Community. I am responsible for receiving, processing and confirming all pilgrim applications for upcoming Walks with Hays Praise. I was a pilgrim on Walk 1037 and a Lay Director for Walk 1733. I have lived in Buda for over 20 years with my husband Mike where we are active church members. Together, we enjoy hiking, camping, kayaking and just about anything active and outdoors-y! I cherish bible study and find renewal through yoga. My professional background includes 14 years in non-profit management, fundraising, and advocacy for abused children, as well as 12 years in human resources management and 2 years as a certified life coach. One of my favorite scripture verses is Philippians 4:6-7, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, through prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, pres-ent your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”

Community Reports Buda/Kyle/ManchacaDempsey Dunkin has agreed to replace Tari Curtis as one of the B/K/M representatives to the Hays Praise Board. He has also agreed to rebuild and maintain the website. If there are things you would like to see on the website please let me know and I will pass the information on to Dempsey. We will be having a local meeting April 4, and we need each of you to plan on attending and bring an Emmaus friend. I would like to see our local Buda/Kyle/Manchaca community build back up. We used to have a very active community, and with all the negativity in the world today Emmaus reminds us of the promise of God’s love and grace. If you belong to any Buda/Kyle/Manchaca area Christian church, please let me know so I can reach out to the leadership. We will offer to help build Emmaus leaders for their church! Please be fishing for pilgrims for the 2017 Walks. Let’s work to bring more people to build leaders for Christ! De Colores, Chris Dunkin

Canyon Lake/NorthshoreCanyon Lake has been blessed by getting the local gatherings back on the calendar. We will be meeting on April 4 at North Shore UMC. Potluck at 6:30 pm. Please remember to bring purple book, name tag and lanyard. We want to strongly encourage everyone to come out to Candlelight Saturday, May 6, at 8:00 pm. Help make the Pilgrims of Walk 2172 feel as special as you did on your Pilgrim Walk. May God Bless each of you! De Colores, Tiffany Hodge

Dripping Springs/DriftwoodDeColores. May our Lord continue to bless the new Hays Praise Emmaus Community. We, at DS/D, would like to thank Dennis and the HPE Board for all the work and effort it has taken to finalize our Emmaus community transition to an independent Emmaus Community. Awesome things are happening at DS/D this year: (1) Linda Snow and Amy Mitchhart accepting to be Walk LDs for the two Women’s Walks this year. Please continue to pray for them and our Lord’s guidance as they prepare for their Walks. (2) We have completed our successful annual fundraiser: selling Butterbraid frozen pastries, allowing DS/D to continue to offer full and partial scholar-ships. [However, we still have about 11 pastries available for sale (5 Blueberry Cream, 2 Cinnamon, 1 Bavarian Cream, 2 Cream Cheese, and 1 Cherry) to the HPE Community. They are $13 each and anyone interested can contact me or Vicki Rector. (3) A small group of our Emmaus brothers and sisters went to the Holy Land with DSUMC Associate Pastor Adam Thornton visiting Jerusalem, Masada , the Dead Sea, the Sea of Galilee, and many more historical sites. It was an amazing trip of a life-time and made the Bible come alive for all of those who went. As we transition towards June, we have a very important item that needs to be addressed at DS/D: Finding volunteers to replace our Local Community Lay Director and an out-going HPE Board Rep. Anyone in our DS/D local community that is interested, please contact Marty Null at [email protected]. Shalom, Marty

GrueneGruene community is now meeting on somewhat of a quarterly basis. We had a great meeting the second Wednesday of February with a significant increase in attendance. Our next quarterly gathering will be May 10. We will have a potluck at 6:30 pm, followed by a time of praise and worship and communion. De Colores, Jamey

Johnson City/Blanco (Welcome to the Hays Praise family!)The JCB community has a new lay director, Eric Porter. Eric previously served as the assistant lay director for the community and has already worked as a servant at a Hays Praise Walk. Our new assistant lay director is William (Bubba) Moeller. Bubba has been very active in Emmaus Walks serving as a prayer chapel servant in Junction, Burnet, and Kerrville. The advisory board determined the community will return to monthly gatherings; the gatherings will always be held on the third Monday of the month at the Johnson City United Methodist Church. Please join us on April 17 at 6:30 pm for a potluck followed by worship. De Colores! Paula

San MarcosBoy what a year already. At our first local gathering we had almost 30 pilgrims! We are all still pilgrims but I think 30 was good, but as many Walks as we’ve had, I really think that number should be more! So with that said, I challenge everyone to come to the local and community gatherings. The fellowship is great and it is just one way to keep that fire God gave us burning! SO FAN THE FLAMES! Come to the local gathering April 4 at Staples UMC. De Colores, Kenny

WimberleyThe Wimberley Community is looking forward to our April 4 gathering. Cyrus Evans will be the Fourth Day speaker and Perry Raybuck and friends will lead the music. The Women’s Walk in May would like your prayers for the team and the pilgrims. Your donation of baked goods for the walk will be appreciated. Wimberley will be hosting the Community Gathering June 6 at Wimberley United Methodist Church. If you would like to be a part of the Prayer Vigils for Walks, contact Tiffany Hodge at [email protected] If you would like to be on the email list for Wimberley information, please contact me at [email protected]. Blessings, Dorothy Evans
