Films

The APPS lms council is one of the seven subdivisions of the Appalachian PopularProgramming Society and is dedicated to bringing movies to ASU students at thetwo theaters on campus. The goal of the lms council is to decide what movies thatwe think the students on campus would be interested in seeing. Box office hitsand “popular” movies are brought to I.G. Greer in the Greer Auditorium and vintagemmovies and lm series are brought to Greenbriar Cinemas (located on the second

oor of the student union).

As a lms council member, you will be able to attend movies for free. If desired, members can work at the two theaters as well and make a bit of extra moneyon the side (selling popcorn and drinks, cleaning up the theaters, etc)! The lmscouncil does all the advertising for the movies we present. Each week we createand distribute yers, posters, handbills, news ads, and a glass case display for the

popular mpopular movie and a yer for the vintage one.

For some movies we do a little bit of extra work; for example, when we broughtTransformers: Revenge of the Fallen, the APPS Films Council made Transformerssuits out of cardboard, walked around campus all day and had mock ghts betweenthe Autobots and Decepticons to get the buzz going for the movie. Deciding the “1st5” each week for a free movie is another weekly occurrence. “1st 5” is a weeklytrivia question/request that the APPS Films Council brainstorms asking for the rstve people to answer/fulll the question/request in order to get into a free movie!

Join APPS Films for free movies, good times, and to meet new friends!

Special Events

Special Events is one of seven sub-councils of the Appalachian Popular ProgrammingSociety. We bring novelty events to campus and typically offer them free of charge tostudents and the community. Previous activities planned by the Special Events Councilinclude; wax hands, hypnotist Jim Wand, fortune tellers, gingerbread house making, tye-dye, and many more. We also plan annual events such as Fall Appal-Fest, Spring Fling

FFestival, and a talent show.

As part of our council you have the chance to be the voice of Appalachian State studentsby deciding what special events brings to campus. After we have decided on events as acouncil, we pick a date and time, and then work the event. We enjoy working our events

and sharing with our fellow students!

Being involved with APPS Special Events is a great way to meet a bunch of reallyamazing people, as well as learn new leadership skills. A major part of putting on aneevent is advertising; we enjoy nding creative ways to let people know what will be

happening on a weekly basis!

More than anything Special Events is about having fun while serving others!

Stage Shows

Stage Shows is one of the seven councils of the Appalachian Popular ProgrammingSociety. We specically focus on regional music acts and comedians. Regional

bands and artists are classied as musical acts that are not yet fully touring nationalacts, yet at the same time are not small local bands. They fall into the medianbetween the two levels. If you happen to stay up to date on the calendars andschedules of schedules of venues such as Cat’s Cradle, Amos Southend, Tremont Music Hall, theOrange Peel or even the Lincoln Theater in Raleigh, you may succeed very well inthis council! We do all of the promotion and advertising for each act we bring. This is good experience for a wide variety of majors including but not exclusiveto marketing and communications. You will be working with peers, problemsolving, learning how to design ads with photoshop, learn the art of promotion, see how shows are set up, and of course make plenty of friends in the process!

SSome examples of recent past Stage Shows bands that the Appalachian PopularProgramming Society has brought are Perpetual Groove, Appetite for Destruction:The Ultimate Guns N’ Roses Tribute, Owen Smith, Corey Smith, Toubab Crewe, and

Badsh: A Tribute to Sublime.

Other past acts that Stage Shows have brought to Appalachian State University haveincluded Dave Matthews Band, John Mayer, Sister Hazel, Eric Church, and various

other superstars…..that were once obscure!

So you like going to concerts? Why not help select the biggest shows that come to campus and be apart of the behind the scenes team?

The Concerts council of the Appalachian Popular Programming Society (APPS) handles the largest names in entertainment that visit ASU, from musicians to stand up comedians.

Past shows have included everything from Dave Matthews to Willie Nelson, Colbie Caillat to BJ Novak, and Moe. to The All-American Rejects.APPS Concerts needs a team passionate about

music and the music and the experience of live entertainment. Members will do everything from brainstorming shows, designing posters, handling promotions, and

even working hospitality for entertainers. While Concerts may only present three to ve events a semester unlike the Club Shows and Stage Shows councils of

APPS, the events are a much larger scale requiring more intensive advertising and planning.Meetings will be Tuesdays at 5pm in the Student Union. Pick up an interest form and

tu turn it in to the APPS office on the second oor of the Student Union at the top of the Cascades stairs.
