The Beginning: Colonization
• Country was founded on racism
– Seeing Natives as “less”
– Taking lands & breaking promises (reservations)
– “Civilizing” children (Boarding schools & adoption)
– Defined “Indian” based on blood quantum
– Long fight for freedoms
• Reality of life for Native Americans today
– 3rd world living conditions (~30% below poverty line)
– Under housed, educated & employed
– Higher rates of mental health issues/worse physical health

Slavery & Beyond
• 1619 Indentured Servants brought to Jamestown
• 1860 ~4 million slaves in US
• Property not people, much “less” than
• Long fight for rights:
– Citizenship, voting, employment/pay
– Jim Crow
– Education
– Housing (Redlining)
– And beyond…..

• Systems & structures that have procedures or processes that disadvantages certain groups (defines the “norm”)
• Began at colonization & continues today
• Seen in: – Wealth gap– Housing – access & quality – Food & transportation options– Employment – opp., $ & upward mobility– Education – access & quality– Health care ‐ access & treatment– Over representation in CJ system & differential treatment stop and frisk, etc.

Privilege What Is It Really?
• Certain advantages, benefits, immunity or degrees of prestige and respect that an individual has by virtue of belonging to a group(s).
• Some you are born with & some you earn
• It a complex, dynamic, ever changing status
• Privilege = POWER

Examples of Privilege
• Skin color• Height• Gender & gender identity• Sexual orientation• SES • Education access & level achieved• Employment status & position• Country of origin & culture• Languages spoken• Mental & physical health• Housing access/status• Access to healthy food
• Personal traits• Not being asked to speak for all members
of your group• Not being assumed to be a criminal• Religion/spiritual practices• Easily seeing & learning about people of
your race• Be surrounded by people of your race on
a regular basis• Living in a neighborhood you chose• Not having to think about your race or
gender on a daily basis

• We focus on what we “don’t have”
• When we are around similar others, we don’t often think about differences
• See the world as we are, not always as it is– Often live in a comfort bubble– Have become numb/unaware of racism
• Uncomfortable to admit advantages/guilt

Definitions
• Explicit Bias: conscious attitudes & beliefs we have about a person or group.
• Implicit Bias: unconscious (unintentional) attitudes and beliefs we have about a person or group. – These are much more dangerous since
we don’t know they exist and don’t realize how they influence us.
