Re-opening of High School & English Medium: Afterthe final exams, the results were declared both in the highschool and the English Medium. The classes were re-opened on April 01 and April 03, 2019 in High Schooland English Medium respectively. After the reopening ofthe schools the deserted campus once again came to lifewith noise of the children. The new admission of classesVI and VII began in the high school. There was rush forthe admission. Headmasters of both the schools had toughtime to admit the students as many parents were pesteringthem to have the students admitted. The parents tried byvarious sources for admission.

High school had only two hours of classes, namely,from 6.45 a.m. to 9.00 A.M. as the paper evaluation ofclass XII was going on. Besides this the teachers had togo for training concerning election. Headmaster had tomanage with the private teachers. English Medium is havingmorning classes from 6.30 to 10.00 A.M.

Wheat Harvesting : This year we had cultivated wheatfor the first time in two plots of our land in the garden. Wehad a good crop. Apostolic boys were called for harvestingfrom 5.30 to 6.15 A.M. on Apr. 02. They finished it in one

day. We were afraid of the rain and so we started threshingthe wheat. On the same day JCB was also employed inthe field to put it in order.

PALM SUNDAY : Palm Sunday procession began fromUrsuline campus at 6.30 A.M. and came to the parishcampus where we had the Mass. That day the first Massof 5.30 A.M. was omitted. The liturgy went on till 9.30.A.M.

In the evening we had short farewell programme forFr. Ravi Hemant Kujur who is assigned to St. Xavier’sSchool, Doranda as the Treasurer and Asst. Teacher. Onthe following day Fr. Ephrem Ba’a, the Principal of thecollege reached him to Doranda.

Guest : Fr. Sanji Yamaoka, Socius of Japan Provincevisited Samtoli with Fr. Provincial , Fr. Joseph MarianusKujur on Apr.16. Fr. Sanji expressed the purpose of hisvisit. After lunch he visited the new site of the college.

Chrism Mass : Chrism mass was held at 11.00 A.M. onApr. 16. Prior to the Mass, at 9.30 A.M., there was ashort prayer and reflection for all the priests of the diocese.

After the mass there was short meeting in the Bishop’sHouse followed by lunch.

Frs Ajit Xess and Florence Kujur visited St. Mary’son Apr. 17 to discuss on some of the issues pertaining toEnglish Medium School. They met Fr. Rector, Bruno,Alexander and Sr. Sudha S.J.T. (Vice Principal). They leftat 4.30 P.M. for Ranchi.

Recollection : Fr. Michael Kerketta gave a recollectiontalk to the community on Apr. 17 at 6.00 P.M. The themewas the ‘preparation for Easter’. He based his talk on theSp. Exercises.

Maundy Thursday : For the Holy week service Fr.Alexander went to Jharain. He was in Jharain for all thethree days to help Frs Pingal and Ignace. Frs Rector, AjitSaras, Ireneus and Sikander went to Sogra. Prior to theliturgy Fr. Rector, PP and Ajit Saras helped in hearing theconfession.

Good Friday : Frs Rector, Sikander and Ireneus went toTamra for the liturgy of Good Friday. Fr. Gabriel, the PPof Tamra was delighted to have us in his parish. For thePassion singing Fr. Sikander took the part of the narratorand Ireneus took the prayers. Fr. Rector gave homily. Healso helped in hearing the confession. Frs Ajit, Bruno andAnup went to Sogra for the liturgy of Good Friday. FrsBruno and Anup spent practically the whole time in hearingthe confession.

Easter : For the Easter we went to different places. FrsRector, Bruno, Sikander and Erenius went to the villagechapel of Dumki for the vigil and morning Mass. Prior tothe vigil we sat for confession till 11.00 P.M. Fr. Brunowas the main celebrant for the vigil mass, Exultet was sungby Erenius and homily was given by Sikander. In themorning Fr. Erenius was the main celebrant and homilywas given by Rector. Dumki is in the border of Jharkhandand Odisha. Many people from Odisha came for the vigiland morning Masses.

Fr. Ireneus went to Jhapla, the mission centre ofGangutoli parish for the Easter Sunday Mass. Fr. Ajit wentto Beritoli, the village chapel in Sogra parish and Anup

went to the village chapel of Konmenjara (Ledritoli) inSamtoli parish and Damian went to celebrate Easter withthe inmates of jail. Thus all the priests were engaged indifferent places for the spiritual ministry. For the eveningall of us were back and had the Easter celebration togetherin the community.

Annual Prize Distribution Day : St. Mary’s EnglishMedium School had annual prize distribution day on April27. The programme started at 5.00 P.M. and ended at8.00 P.M. Rt Rev. Vincent Barwa, D.D., the Bishop ofSimdega Catholic Diocese was the chief guest andSr Leena, S.J.T. from Konmenjara was the guest ofhonour. The Bishop highlighted the importance ofeducation in his speech. There were colourful programmes.Many parents turned up, so much so that the chairs ranshort of.

First Holy Communion : On the second Sunday of Easter(April 28) 270 boys and girls from Ursuline, Holy Spirit,St. John’s school Pharsabera, St. Anna school and St.Mary’s schools received the first Holy communion in theCathedral. Holy Mass was celebrated by V.G. Ignace Tete.Out of 270 students, 35 boys and girls were from St. Mary’sEnglish Medium, 5 from Apostolic, 2 from the hostel and28 day-scholar boys. Community members went todifferent families to congratulate the boys and girls.

Fr. Ajit Saras went to Tongo to cast his valuablevote which is scheduled on April 29.

ASSAM MISSIONJESUIT BHAVAN AND GANA CHETNASAMAJ, TEZPUR

Visitors: On April 01, 2019 Sr. Salomi from Bomdila,Arunachal, came to our community and stayed overnight.Fr. Nilesh S.J., KHM working in Arunachal came on April02, 2019 and left for his destination on April 04, 2019.Scholastic Cherobin Kerketta gave a flying visit to ourcommunity. On April 11, 2019 Fr. Roshan Bage came toJesuit Bhavan and stayed for a couple of days to completehis personal work.

Meetings: On April 02, 2019 Fr. Cyril along with Fr.Theodore and Fr. Benedict left for Jamshedpur to attenda workshop on temporal administration slated for April04-08. On April 12, 2019, Fr. Cyril and Fr. Pius attendedthe managing committee meeting of St. Xavier’s Junior’sCollege, Sonabheel.

Accommodation: On April 01, 2019 GCSaccommodated 23 members of AAWA for their residentialtraining which got concluded on April 03, 2019.

Back home: On April 04, 2019 Fr. Thomas Barla cameback to community after attending REGAE II at St. Xavier,Hazaribag. On April 10, 2019 Fr. Cyril Guria came backfrom Jamshedpur after attending a workshop on temporaladministration.

Celebration: On April 14, 2019, birthday of Fr. Pius andFr. Cyril was jointly celebrated at Jesuit Bhavan whichwas attended by the community members of Xavier Sadan,Balipara and St. Xavier’s College, Sonabheel. Also twoJesuit Novices of Ranchi Province namely Navjit andAshwin came with the community members of Baliparafor the birthday celebration. They were given warmwelcome with Assamese gamosa. The celebration startedwith a prayer service for the birthday babies followed bydinner.

On April 23,2019, Balipara community gave afarewell party to 2 Jesuit Novices and 4 Holy CrossNovices who came to help the faithful in their spiritualpreparation for the Easter. We were also invited to jointhem in this farewell party. Before the dinner, we hadsinging practice for the Final Profession of Fr. ThomasBarla SJ.

On April 25, 2019, Holy Cross Sisters at Bakolainvited us for the Easter Octave dinner. We took thisopportunity also for the singing practice for the Finalprofession of Fr. Thomas Barla. We were served asumptuous dinner which was appreciated by all.

Recollection: On April 15, 2019, there was a recollectionfor the Tezpur Diocese at 6.00 P.M. in the cathedral forall the religious and priests working in the diocese. His

excellency, Bp Michael Akasius Toppo gave recollectionpoints followed by confession and adoration. All theparticipants were served supper after concluding the daywith the adoration.

Chrism Mass: Chrism Mass was held on April 16, 2019at 6.15 A.M. in the cathedral. Bishop Michael AkasiusToppo presided over the Mass. A big number ofconcelebrants and the faithful were present for theoccasion.

Holy Week Ministry & Easter: For the Holy WeekMinistry and Easter, Fr. Thomas Barla went toBhairabkunda Parish in Tezpur and came back on EasterSunday while Fr. Cyril went to Rangapara parish for thevigil Mass and came back early morning on Easter Sunday.Fr. Pius and Fr. Henry Barla S.J. attended all the servicesof the Holy Week and Easter vigil at Don Bosco Cathedral,Tezpur.

Outing: Along with Fr. Henry Barla S.J., Jesuit Bhavancommunity, Tezpur went for its outing to Kaziranga Parkand saw Rhino, a good number of Deers and Elephants.From there, we went to Orchid park and had a glimpse ofOrchid flowers, museum and North East Dance. We, too,enjoyed meal comprising of 19 food items popular in theNorth East.

Visit: On April 24, 2019, Frs. Pius, Xavier and HenryBarla S.J. went to Kathalguri and visited the site of theChurch building construction and in consultation with Mr.Prasoon Banerjee, the contractor, agreed to extend thelength of the structure with a view to increase the seatingcapacity. They came back to Tezpur on April 25, 2019.On April 26, 2019, Fr. Henry Barla S.J. left for WokaParish in Dibrugarh Diocese to meet his relatives who wereeagerly waiting for his arrival. Fr. Cyril Guria accompaniedhim in his journey.

Final Profession: April 30, 2019 was a historic event forFr. Thomas Barla S.J. who pronounced his final vows.This ceremony was attended by Bp Gabriel Kujur S.J.,the Bishop emeritus; Fr. Joseph Marianus Kujur, theProvincial, 20 Jesuits of Assam Mission, Fr. Henry BarlaS.J. from Ranchi Province, 04 Jesuits of KHM

Region, Sister collaborators, GCS staff and some studentsattending computer class. Holy Mass was held in theevening at 6.00 P.M. with a word of welcome by Fr. PiusXalxo followed by presentation of short life sketch of Fr.Thomas Barla by Fr. John Berchmans Dungdung. Soonafter that, Bp Gabriel Kujur led us into the Mass as themain celebration and Fr. Joseph Marianus Kujur, theProvincial gave an inspiring homily and received the vowsof Fr. Thomas Barla.

Soon after the Mass, a short felicitation programfollowed in honour of Fr. Thomas Barla. Fr. JohnBerchmans was the M.C who with his mesmerizingwords created an atmosphere of joy and festivity. All of usthoroughly enjoyed the time allotted for the felicitation.As the program started with Nagpuria song accompaniedby the beat of “Mandar, all of us were impelled to jumpout of our chairs, clapping our hands and shaking ourfeet and bodies and dancing in perfect unison. Fr. Thomaswas honoured with a shawl and the rest with Assamesegamosa. Felicitation program was punctuated with thewords of Fr. Thomas who expressed his sentiments,appreciation, precious moments of his life and finally a voteof thanks was proposed by him. Bp Gabriel Kujur prayedover the meal and all of us enjoyed the sumptuous mealprepared for the occasion. We are very thankful to all thestaff members of GCS, kitchen staff and all those whoextended their helping hand to make this event a greatsuccess. A big congratulation and all the best to you Fr.Thomas!

On the following day, all the guests left for theirrespective places to resume their works. Thanks to oneand all for your grace filled and encouraging presence.

Prothrapur

The meeting with the Archbishop Felix Toppo was held inthe Jubillee Sadan, Port Blair on 1st April 2019. The faithfulfrom four southern parishes namely Port Blair, Prothrapur,Wimberlyugunj and Ferrargunj were present for themeeting. There was a lively exchange and sharing regardingsome of the matters taking place in Jharkhand and in ourcountry. Later the members of consulting body of the

diocese had the chance of some kind of sharing followedby dinner. Fr. David joined the group.

On the occasion of Palm Sunday, the program startedfrom Pathrgudda Church, one of the sub-stations ofProthrapur parish. The Parish priest Fr. David blessed thepalm branches and the procession proceeded toProthrapur Church where the rest of the programmes tookplace. Fr. Edward went to Chidiyatapu which is 11 kms.away from the Parish, to celebrate the Palm Sunday. Thiswas the first celebration done as a trial basis and ifeverything goes well, the tradition could continue in future.The procession started at 7.30 A.M. Many peopleparticipated actively in the Holy Eucharist.

Holy Thursday’s programme began at 5.00 inthe evening with the solemn Eucharistic celebration. Liturgywas very well prepared and parish choir created aprayerful atmosphere through their well chosen hymns.All the faithful participated actively. Later the BlessedSacrament was brought in procession and was placedon well decorated table for adoration. People prayed intheir groups according to their turns which lasted tillmidnight.

Usually on Good Friday we do have three timesthe way of the Cross. In the morning at 6.00 A.M. theway of the Cross was conducted by Mahila Sangh.Thereafter at 7.30 A.M. the way of the cross held atCarbynscove Church led by the youth. Carbynscove isvery special and important for us because late Fr. JosephMinj fell down on the very last step of the stair cases andbreathed his last on the Good Friday in 2007. The thirdway of the cross was led by Catholic Sabha at 2.00 P.M.People participated in all three places in good number.Good Friday ceremony began at 3.00 P.M. The Churchwas packed with the faithful and many had to adjustthemselves outside the Church.

Holy Saturday was another busy day. People werebusy in various activities carrying out their responsibitiesallotted in communities and bastis. People of Brud Godamcame to clean the Church. Mr. Jerom Tigga and companywere busy arranging the chairs whereas under the leadership

of Mr. Gregory Bodra of Carbynscove, campus wasdecorated beautifully with palm and Mari leaves. Fr.Edward availed himself for the confession. Night vigilservice started at 11.00 P.M. and it got over by 2.00 A.M.Big number of the faithful attended the night service. Parishpriest went to Pathargudda Chruch for the Easter SundayMass whereas Fr. Edward stayed back in the parish forthe same.

The tradition of the house blessing during Easter inAndamans offers ample opportunities for the priests tocome in contact with the faithful. This gives greaterawareness and deeper knowledge of their life situation.Frs. David and Edward were busy and still busy in houseblessing turn by turn and it is going on and off but they arevery sure it will be over in due time. In the absence of Fr.Edward, Fr. David continues this noble task.

Mahila Sangh of the parish went to Kurmadera forpicnic. Two sisters and father David joined the group. Itwas little inconvenient for the mothers to reach thedestination as the bus could not reach to exact spot ofpicnic due to some practical problems. On the other hand,mothers were courageous enough to walk till thedestination. Sisters conducted some group games in whichall the mothers participated and enjoyed thoroughly.

After the long gap of time, Deacon Binay PrakashKujur from Naya Sahar was ordained in Port Blair Parishby the Emeritus Bishop Alex Dias, SFX, on 28th April2019. Ceremony started at 7.30 A.M. in the Stella MarisCathedral, Port Blair. The swagat Programme followedfor the newly ordained priest soon after the Mass. Therewere about twenty priests for this ceremony to witness tothe occasion. Fr. Edward and Fr. Anup Kiran Minj availedthemselves to be there as representatives.

On 29th morning Fr. Edward kerketta, the assistantP.P. left for the mainland for his home visit whereasFr. Anup pushed off to Diglipur after the ordinationprogramme of Deacon Binyay Praksh Kujur. Fr. Davidreached them both. Fr. David continued house blessing indifferent villages.

Foreign Mission

April was the month full of joys, blessings and eventsfor the Gesù community of Johny and Nirmal. On 6 April,a day of reflection and sharing was organized for theFirst Year Scholastics. The theme of the day was JesuitPriestly Vocation. P. Cecil Azzopardi, the Spiritual Directorof the Scholastics, guided them in their prayer, reflectionand sharing. The day of reflection was part of thepreparations for the “Arrupe Month” known as the Pre-Ordination Programme, which will be held in Spain inSeptember.

On 7 April, both Johny and Nirmal participatedin a day-long pilgrimage to the Shrine of Our Lady ofDivine Love in Rome. The pilgrimage was organizedby the All India Tribals Association (ABHAS) to deepenthe Lenten spirit of prayer and penance. A good numberof tribal Fathers, Brothers and Sisters participated inthe pilgrimage. Gregorian University was closed for theEaster holidays from 12 April. The Scholastics of Gesùcommunity actively participated in all the liturgicalcelebrations of the Holy Week in the Church of Gesù andmaintained a conducive atmosphere for prayerfulreflections on the Passion, Death and Resurrection of theLord. Indeed, the Easter was celebrated joyfully in a perfectcommunity spirit.

Immediately after Easter, a long awaited dayarrived, that is, the Diaconate Ordination of 12 Scholastics,out of which 5 were from South Asian Assistancy.On the Eve of the Diaconate Ordination, GesùCommunity dedicated one hour of special prayer forthe would-be-Deacons in the presence of theirfamily members, friends and well-wishers. On 23 April,they were ordained Deacons by S.Exc. Cyril Vasil, S.J.,the Titular Archbishop of Tolemais (Libya) and theSecretary of the Congregation for the Oriental Churches.For two Deacons from Jamshedpur Province, a goodnumber of tribal Fathers, Brothers and Sisters came tocongratulate and celebrate with them. After almost twoweeks of Easter holidays, the regular classes resumed on29 April and everyone was back to the rhythm of dailyroutine.

Kulwant is now fully engrossed in unearthing thesecrets of Canon Laws. The regular classes, groupdiscussions and assignments keep him all the timebusy. Among the busy schedule, he seems to enjoy theacademic activities. Just before the Easter, R.P. Delegateof DIR (DomorumRomanarumSocietatisIesu) visitedhis community of Collegio San Roberto Bellarmino.R.P. Delegate was pleased to meet each member of thecommunity. At the end of his visitation, he addressedthe whole community emphasizing the importance ofcommunity life and asked all to pray for one another.

For the Easter celebration, Kulwant went toPalermo, one of the cities in southern Italy. Apart fromvisiting the sick and hearing the confession for 6-8 hours,he helped the Parish Priest of St. Joseph at the Stationparish in the liturgical celebrations of the Holy Week.Happy with what he did and achieved, he came back toRome on 22 April so as to participate in the DiaconateOrdination of the Jesuit Scholastics in the Church of Gesùon 23 of April.

Join Diploma in Integral Ecology, an Inter-Universitycourse based on the Papal Encyclical Laudatosi’, is goingon in full swing for the second successive year withas many as 70 students. As part of the Workshop, thestudents led by Prem, the Course Co-ordinator, went toAmatrice, a region destroyed by the earthquake in2016. S.Exc. Domenico Pomilli, the Bishop ofRieti-Amatrice guided the students in their study, researchand reflection on the impact of the natural disaster on thehuman as well as on biotic community. The students hadthe opportunity to visit some of the families, who had losttheir family members, homes and almost everything. It wasan unforgettable day for the students to spend the dayamidst the contrast of the ruined houses and spectacularnatural beauty.

From 1st -5th, April, Fr. Christopher Llannos,S.J., the newRegional Superior, Guyana, Barbados and Jamaica madehis maiden Canonical visit to St. Joseph’s Mission NorthPakaraimas. Fr. Elias Surin, S.J., the parish priest, along

with his parishioners warmly received him and visitedKopinang, Kamana and Kato village communities. Fr. AnilKishore Tirkey, S.J. guided 8 days Retreat to Sr. HelenaSoreng,OSU in Georgetown as she was preparing herselfto celebrate her Silver Jubilee on 14th May, 2019 inSt. Teresa’s Catholic Church Karasabai. Fr. Anil Kishoreis in-charge of seven parishes in the East Bank ofDemerara in Georgetown. Fr. Anugrah Amar Bage, S.J.in Our Lady of Lourdes Hosororo parish arranged a youthSeminar on the theme, ‘Youth and Vocation’, where 100youth participated in it. Fr. John Persaud, the vicar of theClergy was the resource person.

In South Pakaraimas, Ursuline Sisters of Tildonk –Sr. CrecenciaToppo, Sr. Helena Soreng, Sr. Nishi SusannaKujur, and Sr. Sosan Anima Kujur preached three daysretreat under the theme, ‘God’s Merciful love and ourresponse’during Lenten Season in all their six villagecommunities- Yurongparu, Rukumuta, Tipuru, Pipong,Tigerpond and Karasabai. Staying in the villages and visitingthe families in itself was a blessing. Fr. Edwin Anthony,S.J. from St. Ignatius Jesuit Community Lethem, came toKarasabai for the Easter celebration.

The Parish Lay Assistants took leading role in EasterHouse Blessings. It is a wonderful tradition to cometogether for prayer and receive the Risen Lord’s blessingsin their families. During the Easter Season, Fr. Elias Surin,S.J. along with Br. Sylvester Sebastian and Br. BernardBanfus, visited Maikwak, Kopinang, Waipa and Kamanaand shared the peace, joy and happiness of Our RisenLord.

From May 4th-11th, the Bishops of the AntillesEpiscopal Conference along with the Apostolic Nuncio,His Excellency, Archbishop Fortunatus Nwachukwu, havebeen attending the Annual Plenary Meeting hosted byBishop Emmanuel Lafont, in Cayenne, French Guiana todiscuss the pastoral initiatives and other matters concerningthe Antilles Episcopal Conference. Guyana’s BishopFrancis Alleyne,OSB is participating in this gathering. On12th May, the Mother’s Day was celebrated with greatzeal and enthusiasm.
