Appointment of Managing Director │ National Memorial Arboretum

AN INTRODUCTION FROM OUR CHAIR Thank you for your interest in the National Memorial Arboretum. The National Memorial Arboretum has undergone a major evolution over the past five years on a journey to transform the visitor experience at this nationally significant place, through both a transformation of award-winning physical facilities and the range of visitor services and activities. The most frequent comments from both connected and unconnected visitors are about the scale and sheer diversity of the site and how inspiring they found their visit. With the foundations laid and the retirement of our current MD, Sarah Montgomery, this is an exciting and dynamic time to join the NMA to develop and drive forwards the long-term vision, masterplan and strategy with the support of the board. This is a remarkable opportunity – we are seeking an outstanding person, driven by our values, to inspire and engage our staff, volunteer and supporters, whilst sustaining operational excellence and addressing the strategic opportunities and challenges ahead at this youthful arboretum and place of remembrance. I look forward to hearing from you. David Whimpenny Chair of the National Memorial Arboretum and Trustee, Royal British Legion

Appointment of Managing Director │ National Memorial Arboretum

ABOUT THE NATIONAL MEMORIAL ARBORETUM Situated in Staffordshire on the edge of the National Forest, the Arboretum is the UK’s year-round centre of remembrance. Our maturing woodland landscape is home to over 360 memorials. Since planting began in 1997, the National Memorial Arboretum has been a special place honouring those who have served, and continue to serve, our nation in many different ways. It’s not a cemetery. It’s a place of life, represented by the 30,000 trees planted here. Covering 150 acres, the Arboretum has something for everyone. For some it’s a wonderful place to stroll and enjoy the trees; for others it's a peaceful and beautiful place to remember loved ones, particularly those who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country. The trees and the more than 350 dedicated memorials on our site make the Arboretum a living tribute that will forever acknowledge the personal sacrifices made by the Armed Forces and civil services of this country. Importantly, the focus isn’t only military. There is a large area devoted to Police who have fallen while on duty, as well as other areas devoted to civilian charities such as Fire and Rescue Service and Royal National Lifeboats Institute (RNLI). The Arboretum, which is part of The Royal British Legion, was the brainchild of Commander David Childs CBE who wished to see established a national focus for Remembrance. The project began with no money, no land, no staff and no trees. The National Lottery, in the form of the Millennium Commission, granted some forty per cent of the funds needed and this was matched by thousands of donations, both large and small, from a wide variety of organisations both military and civilian, men and women, corporate and voluntary. We once estimated that the involvement of so many supporters made the Arboretum the most popular of all the Millennium projects. In 2014, the Arboretum topped a national public vote on the favourite places funded by the National Lottery in England over the last 20 years. We hope that, through the innovative approaches to engaging both connected and unconnected visitors with remembrance through dynamic and immersive activity and a diverse programme of events, it will, certainly, be one of the longest lasting.

THE ARBORETUM TODAY Today the Arboretum receives more than 300,000 visitors a year and has received multiple awards as a leading visitor attraction in the UK. Guided walks, audio guides, buggy tours and a land train are available to help visitors explore the site. A fascinating exhibition which charts the history of Remembrance can be explored and a programme of temporary exhibitions helps bring the site to life. A year-round programme of events also take place throughout the year.

The Memorials The Arboretum is home to over 350 thought-provoking memorials. The memorials are diverse in nature, rich in symbolism and collectively represent a broad population of society from military associations, charitable organisations, emergency services, fraternity groups and individuals. The Remembrance Centre In 2016, our £15.7m Remembrance Centre was opened by HRH The Duke of Cambridge. The iconic new building was designed by the prestigious Glenn Howells Architects and features three exhibition galleries, a restaurant and shop, separate coffee shop and a beautiful cloistered courtyard with garden. The centre has transformed the experience of our many visitors. At its heart is a fascinating, interactive exhibition providing a preview of the Arboretum and an introduction to the concept of Remembrance, which was made possible by a £2.85 million grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund. The Remembrance Centre also includes the Learning Centre which welcomed over 16,000 schools and youth groups in 2018. Millennium Chapel The Millennium Chapel of Peace and Forgiveness is the only place in the country where the Act of Remembrance is observed daily at 11 am. The daily Act of Remembrance incorporates the Last Post, Silence and the Reveille. Aspects The opening of Aspects has been another landmark moment for the Arboretum. The £8.1m events building is able to accommodate over 400 people and up to 300 people banquet style, creating additional demand in the local economy for delegate accommodation and other facilities.
