On behalf of The University of Queensland (UQ) and Mater Research, we are seeking vibrant and exceptional people to consider the opportunity of becoming the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Mater Research / Director of Mater Research Institute – The University of Queensland (MRI-UQ). This is a Research academic appointment jointly created by Mater Research and UQ. It is defined as a ‘conjoint appointment’, requiring the appointee to perform a single integrated role rather than two distinct roles.

The appointee will provide leadership and management to ensure that the organisation meets its scientific, research and commercial objectives, develop and promote the formation of collaborative and multidisciplinary research groups on the Mater campus with clinicians and researchers and in the wider scientific community that engage in collaborative research of national and international significance.

MATER RESEARCH

The establishment of a medical research institute at Mater Hill was a long-term goal of the Sisters of Mercy and the Mater Health Services Governing Board. This desire and commitment culminated in July 1998 with the formation of the Mater Medical Research Institute, a development funded by the Sisters of Mercy and their supporters. The Governor-General officially opened the institute in March 1999. In 2006, Mater Research incorporated and became a National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) accredited independent medical research institute, and in 2013 partnered with The University of Queensland to form the Mater Research Institute – The University of Queensland (MRI-UQ).

Mater Research commenced operation in 1998 with ten staff, since then it has experienced significant growth, creating an internationally competitive institute with many original programs attracting top scientists from around the globe. Mater Research has documented significant outputs in publications, patents, student achievements, collaborations, peer-reviewed funding and other significant funding, and in 2016 produced over 430 research publications.

The initial scientific focus for Mater Research was cancer, in its broadest sense, however the research has grown from its strength in the basic immunology of cancer to seed and attract other independent scientific teams working across a broad range of major health priorities. Mater researchers are regularly publishing in leading clinical (eg. NEJM, JAMA and Lancet) and biomedical (eg. Nature Medicine, Cell) journals, progressively building our national and international reputation. The institute has aligned its research programs with the major clinical streams in the restructured clinical services at Mater as follows:

The Institute has grown into a leading independent medical institute in Australia, characterised by significant clinical integration. This clinical integration is facilitated both by ownership by Mater Group, and by location with three major and proximate (within 1.5 km) hospital campuses (Mater Hill, Princess Alexandra Hospital (TRI) and Lady Cilento Children’s Hospital (see map)). Mater Research oversees and manages all research, including clinical trials, across the extended Mater Health campuses. Mater Research is headquartered in Aubigny Place, a heritage-listed building on the Mater Hill campus.

Mater was founded in 1906 by the Sisters of Mercy, who opened a 20-bed private hospital in a former residential home in Brisbane’s North Quay. This was the first Mater Private Hospital, and the start of a tradition of care and compassion for the sick and needy. Mater’s board of directors and staff have since upheld the philosophy and Mission of offering this care according to our core Values of Mercy, Dignity, Care, Commitment and Quality.

On 23 April 2013, Mater became a ministry of Mercy partners, a Catholic Church entity established in 2008 following approval from the Vatican. Through its collocation of private and public facilities, Mater can meet the needs of the community by reinvesting revenue from the business back into the provision of health services, health research and health education.

Mater Research Institute – The University of Queensland (MRI-UQ) is an alliance between Mater Health Services and The University of Queensland aimed at making the discoveries that will deliver improved health outcomes to the world. MRI-UQ’s 250+ researchers are based at state of the art facilities at the new Translational Research Institute at Woolloongabba (tri.edu.au), and the clinical settings at the Mater Hospitals Campus at nearby South Brisbane (mater.org.au). A key distinguishing feature of our research landscape is its multidisciplinary focus marrying the expertise of clinical and research teams. FACULTY OF MEDICINE

The University of Queensland’s Faculty of Medicine is an internationally recognised provider of world-class education and research. The research-intensive Faculty has a gross budget of almost $300 million, employs approximately 1000 continuing and fixed-term staff (headcount), has a community of more than 4000 non-salaried academic appointees and around 3200 students (headcount).

The Faculty of Medicine welcomes approximately 500 new medical students each year via both graduate and school-leaver pathways. Undergraduate and postgraduate programs are available in the disciplines of Medicine, Health Sciences, E-Health, Mental Health, Biomedical Sciences and Public Health.

The Faculty possesses enormous strengths spanning research, teaching, industry engagement and clinical practice in disciplines ranging from the basic sciences, biomedical research and development, to clinical trials and public health. Research projects within the Faculty have already led to discoveries with far-reaching social and economic impacts, including the revolutionary Gardasil (TM) vaccine for cervical cancer (Professor Ian Frazer). Faculty staff include three highly cited authors, one Fellow of the Royal Society (FRS), three Fellows of the Australian Academy of Science (FAA) and 12 Fellows of the Academy of Health and Medical Sciences (AAHMS). The Faculty is a core member of Brisbane Diamantina Health Partners, the Brisbane-wide academic health science system.

Educational offerings in biomedical sciences, medicine and public health are informed and supported by research activity across a range of fundamental and clinical areas of importance including recognised strengths in cancer, skin diseases, brain and mental health, infectious disease, maternal and child health, health services research and genomics. TRANSLATIONAL RESEARCH INSTITUTE

As one of the southern hemisphere’s largest facilities of its kind, TRI is one of only a few places worldwide where new biopharmaceuticals and treatments can be researched, discovered, manufactured, and clinically tested in one location. The Translational Research Institute – ‘translating laboratory success into benefits for patients’ - is a major step forward in growing Australia’s research capacity.

The TRI building can house up to 900 researchers and support staff. State of the art facilities includes physical containment level 2 (PC2) and level 3 (PC3) laboratories, a vivarium, a Cell Therapies clean room facility, staff support spaces, a large lecture theatre and advanced education facilities. The associated and adjacent biopharmaceuticals facility houses a pilot drug manufacturing facility to bring discoveries to pilot commercialisation.

TRI is a joint venture involving The University of Queensland, Queensland University of Technology Institute for Biomedical Innovation, the Princess Alexandra Hospital, Mater Research and the Queensland Government. TRI is the vision of 2006 Australian of the Year, Professor Ian Frazer, and supported by $354m in grants and funding from the Australian Government, Queensland Government and Atlantic Philanthropies.

As a TRI founding partner, Mater Research is also embedded in the Children’s Health Research Centre (CCHR) adjacent to the Mater South Brisbane campus, Queensland’s first fully-integrated research facility focused on child and adolescent health research.

ROLE OF THE CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER, MATER RESEARCH / DIRECTOR, MATER RESEARCH INSTITUTE – THE UNIVERSITY OF QUEENSLAND.

POSITION PURPOSEThe Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Mater Research / Director of Mater Research Institute – The University of Queensland (MRI-UQ) provides leadership and management to ensure that Mater Research/MRI-UQ meets its scientific, research and commercial objectives. In conjunction with the Board and the Executive Dean of the UQ Faculty of Medicine, the CEO/Director is responsible for the development of the strategic direction for Mater Research/MRI-UQ in line with the Mater and UQ strategic plans.

As the primary interface of Mater Research and MRI-UQ with key stakeholders, the CEO/ Director is responsible for promoting, identifying and nurturing relationships with government, philanthropic organisations, other medical research institutes, hospitals, other research organisations and industry. The CEO/Director is responsible for developing and ensuring the effective management of all aspects of the organisation’s activities, including the development of a stream of significant, successful research programs.

The CEO/Director will drive the process of further developing a world-class medical research institute based upon a commitment to academic medicine to discover, develop and translate medical research for the benefit of humanity that integrates with areas of excellence within the health services provided by the Mater Hospitals.

KEY AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY

Leadership • Demonstrate a clear vision for Mater Research/MRI-UQ and maintain a long-term, big-

picture view.

• Cultivate an active network of relationships to position Mater Research to take a lead role in national and international research initiatives.

• Develop a culture within Mater Research/MRI-UQ that aligns with the vision, beliefs and strategies of the Mater Group and Sisters of Mercy and the University of Queensland.

• Provide leadership in enhancing the interface of institute-based research with industry and government including the professional promotion and marketing of the organisation’s research capability.

• Assume responsibility for the translation of research into appropriate commercial outcomes.

• Ensure that the organisation attracts, recruits and retains high profile scientists and academic clinicians across a range of disciplines.

• Work with the Scientific Advisory Board to ensure that research is of a high national and international standard.

• Develop an effective IP commercialisation program that is a viable revenue stream for the organisation.

Professional and community• Increase knowledge in the field of human medicine by promoting the conduct of research

which meets the tenets and values of the Catholic Church as interpreted and lived by the Sisters of Mercy.

• Maintain a high profile within relevant professional organisations.

• Represent Mater Research/MRI-UQ at external forums and ensure a continuing positive working relationship with government, other medical research institutes and hospitals.

• Participate in and provide leadership in community affairs related to the discipline in professional, government, commercial and industrial sectors where appropriate.

• Interact with a wide range of organisations which fund the Mater Research/MRI-UQ’s research programs and identify and establish new opportunities for funding of research.

Funding and resources• Ensure Mater Research/MRI-UQ grows its competitive research funding, including NHMRC

funded research.

• Work with the Mater Foundation to significantly increase the level of philanthropic funding available to the Institute.

• Work with Mater Group to establish a formula for continuing overhead, infrastructure and research program funding which is recognised as providing Mater Group with agreed outcomes.

• Lead the discussions with the Translational Research Institute to ensure an optimal outcome for both Mater Group with respect to the resources that this government backed research infrastructure initiative can provide.

• Seek out new and emerging resourcing opportunities.

SELECTION CRITERIA

QUALIFICATIONS

Essential• Tertiary qualification(s) in a relevant field, such as medicine, science or allied health and a

PhD or MD by research in a relevant field or equivalent experience.

Desirable• Formal training in management or leadership.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

Essential• Contemporary understanding of scientific, research or relevant complex organization and

the ability to develop implement a high-quality strategic plan to address the challenges and opportunities, particularly in relation to the funding environment. Ability to provide strategic leadership and operational management of all organisational matters of complex organisations.

• Recognised as an international leader in a research field aligned to the programs of Mater Research.

• Exceptional ability to represent and advocate for the Institute in an articulate and positive manner, including expertise in negotiation, resolution of problems and the maintenance of highly ethical public relations in formal and informal settings.

• Inspiring leadership skills and a proven ability to retain, build and inspire a bright and creative team towards optimum performance.

• In-depth working knowledge of current applicable regulations and industry best practices and standards pertaining to the disclosure of clinical trial information is critical.

• Exceptional interpersonal skills, with the demonstrated ability to engage, influence and negotiate at the executive level within and external to the academic environment.

EXPERIENCE

Essential• Demonstrated academic track record at Professorial or Associate Professor level in a

research-intensive university or medical research institute.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

Employment type

This is a Conjoint appointment between Mater Research and MRI-UQ. It is anticipated that the position will be close to full-time, however part-time, transitional and/or job-share arrangements can be negotiated.

The appointment is for five years, renewable and the position will report to the Chair of the Mater Research Board and the Executive Dean, The University of Queensland.

Salary and benefits

An attractive remuneration package will be negotiated with the successful candidate.

Relocation

In the case of an interstate or international appointee, the University will offer a relocation package for travel and establishment expenses. Details will be negotiated as part of the contract of employment.
