Objectives
• Promote the AAFCS Awards, Grants, Fellowships, and Scholarships Program to AAFCS members
• Encourage opportunities for self-application and/or nomination for member recognition
• Provide insights for successful completion of forms for applications and nominations
• Encourage volunteer service as a juror

AWARDS SCHEDULESeveral categories of awards are posted for year-round information on the AAFCS home page.
Authorized awards are posted with action dates after annual conference.
Awards are authorized by the AAFCS Board of Directors:
– some awards are offered every year– others are offered in alternating years

DEFINITIONS of “AWARDS”in Family and Consumer Sciences
• AWARD: an honor in recognition for meritorious performance and contributions to the field of FCS
• GRANT: financial support for research studies in FCS
• FELLOWSHIP: financial support from an endowment given for graduate study in FCS
• SCHOLARSHIP: financial support from an endowment given for undergraduate study in FCS

Each award category has criteria for purpose, funding policies, and candidate’s eligibility.
Select the award category for which you wish to apply or to make a nomination.

GOVERNING STATEMENTS
These five governing statements precede specific award category guidelines which give procedures about how to complete and submit a selected award application.

Governing Statements for All Categories of Awards
- All policies, procedures, and guidelines must be followed in order for the nomination/application to be considered for juried review for the award, fellowship, grant or scholarship.- Applicants/nominees are allowed to submit to only one award, grant, fellowship, or scholarship per year review cycle.- The Awards and Recognition Committee reserves the right not to choose a recipient for an award, grant, fellowship, or scholarship if jurors do not find a worthy applicant.- A graduate fellowship and/or scholarship recipient cannot re-apply for any graduate fellowship or scholarship the succeeding year following acceptance of funds from a graduate fellowship or scholarship.- Members of the AAFCS Board of Directors, Awards and Recognition Committee, and Development Committee are not eligible to apply during their terms of office; AAFCS staff members are not eligible to apply during their periods of employment with the Association.

Under the Awards tab, the AAFCS website posts general information with action dates plus detailed directions for access, uploading, and transmission of data for all categories.

HINTS FOR SUCCESS
• Read criteria and guidelines for the selected award
• Start early; update CV/Resume and files of professional accomplishments
• Outline information and answer the questions according to the given headings and terms
• Process the document in MS WORD14
• Write with a strong voice and point of view
• Check for correct spelling, grammar, and other mechanics of writing

SUCCESSFUL APPLICATIONS
• Give title and abstract that identify the content
• Answer the questions asked• Provide complete and comprehensible details • Represent the applicant’s membership and
credentials accurately• Contain supporting materials as allowed and
within specifications in the guidelines• Are clear, concise, and do not exceed limits
specified for the number of words and pages

Reviews begin after the closing date posted for award submissions and continue until all awards are judged and final decisions are made

January 11, 2016•Reviews begin as soon as applications can be organized and sent by email.•Award notices for 2016 are expected to begin around April 1.
THE REVIEW PROCESS

• Members of the Awards and Recognition Committee (ARC) serve as jurors and juror chairs as assigned for each award
• Each award is reviewed by five (5) jurors (minimum) allocated among ARC members and AAFCS volunteers selected to serve as jurors
• The review process is strengthened by the diversity of volunteer jurors

• Juror applications are encouraged during the same time when award applications are being prepared
• Selected jurors are vetted for membership status, conflicts of interest, and preference for assignment
• Jurors are assigned to an award category according to their interests, professional experiences, and factors that pertain to knowledge and eligibility to serve

• Familiarize details of their assigned award
• Review applications and assign points according to published criteria and guidelines
• Work independently through the online process and submit their scores
• Participate in conference calls as determined

JUROR APPLICATION
• AAFCS members apply by downloading the “2016 Jurors Volunteer Form” on the Awards page of the www.aafcs.org site and submitting information online

AWARDS NOTIFICATIONS
• Awards candidates are notified as soon as possible about their review outcomes. If winners cannot be notified in time for “early bird” registration for AAFCS Annual Conference, they still receive the “early bird” discount
• Awardees are notified and advised about conference sessions and events during which they will be acknowledged
