Now that Jack Frost is on his way out, and warmer temperatures have begun setting in, your yard is springing

back to life. Although we were lucky to face a relatively mild winter, the cold season can still wreak havoc around your home’s exterior and yard.

Putting your property back in proper shape requires planning, preparation and, most

importantly, timing. First and foremost, it is important to complete any crucial cleanup or maintenance chores. Now is a great time to strengthen your lawn before the weeds begin to fully emerge.

Here’s a checklist of recommended steps to take now to prevent damage and ensure a more attractive property come summertime:• Inspect your property carefully. Look for

loose, damaged or lost roof shingles that may need to be replaced, broken large tree branches or limbs that could be a hazard, and other red flags.• Clear dead leaves, dead foliage and debris from your home’s perimeter, lawn, bushes, flower beds and gutters to prevent water dam-age, bug infestations and mold outbreaks.

Getting a Jump on SpringIs your home’s exterior ready for warmer weather?

Joye Law Firm received a 2019 Community Ambassador Award by the Charleston Animal Society. Since the beginning of our partnership, Joye has contributed over $50,000 to the shelter — with no plans to slow down. Atty. Jeff Gerardi accepted the award on behalf of our firm at the shelter’s 145th Annual Meeting in February.

Attorneys Mark Joye and Mark Bringardner were both featured in South Carolina Lawyers Weekly magazine for having secured two of the state’s largest verdicts last year. The cases included verdicts for $17 million and $2.2 million.

Each year, the magazine compiles a list of the top verdicts and settlements across the state. Making the list is difficult in itself, and making it multiple times is an exceptional accomplishment. We are proud to share this exciting news with you.

While the vast majority of our cases are able to be resolved outside of the court room, the fact

that Joye Law Firm is willing to take insurance companies to court helps set the tone

for them taking our clients’ cases seriously. This is just one more way Joye Law Firm is committed to providing the best possible legal representation.

Congratulations to Atty. Brent Arant for securing a successful jury verdict in Charleston County. Brent’s clients were injured in an impact with an 18-wheeler. When the sides were unable to agree to a settlement, Brent was

able to secure a victory for his clients in court.

Joye Law Firm prides itself on providing the best possible legal representation. As part of this commitment, the firm is always looking to employ new technology to improve processes and procedures. Therefore, the firm is excited to announce the implementation of a new, cutting-edge Case Management system in 2019. While clients won’t notice much of a difference, behind the scenes, the new software will enable our firm to continue to push the edge of what’s possible in client service. Thanks to firm Chief Operating Officer Rob Cluxton for overseeing this important process!

• Aerate, fertilize and seed your lawn. • Should seeding not be in your forecast, apply a weed and feed to your turf.• Apply mulch to your garden to avoid weed growth and help retain soil moisture.• Prepare your lawn mower. Check the spark plug, clean or replace the air filter, change the oil, and sharpen the blade.• Prune your trees, bushes and shrubs. Be sure to wait until after they bloom if they already have buds.• Inspect and repair your fencing.• If needed, power wash your pa-tio, driveway, deck and/or home’s exterior.• Mow when the time is right.

You’ll want to wait until your grass is about three inches before your first cut.

While these tasks may sound formidable, the key is to break it down into manageable chunks of activity. Any do-it-yourself

homeowner should be able to accomplish these early spring preparations in about 10 hours. So, consider doing a little bit over a few weekends in March and April, and then you’ll be enjoying your yard all season long.

Those who have eagerly anticipated summer after a grim winter and inclement spring are welcoming the rising tempera-tures. But as the temps go up and the layers come off, it is important to heed important sun safety precautions.

Even though the sun isn’t as intense as in the summer, the early spring still presents the risk for bad sunburns. That’s because when the temperatures aren’t especially high, people are not thinking about burning and may not be applying sunscreen.

It’s not just sunburns that worry health experts, since excess sun exposure can increase your risk of developing skin cancer, it is important to practice sun safety every day.

Starting at 6 months of age, doc-tors recommend daily sunscreen use. A sunscreen with SPF (sun protection factor) of 15 will block 93 percent of ultraviolet (UV) rays; 30 or greater should block 97 percent. Experts recommend slathering on enough sunscreen to fill a shot glass, coating

all exposed areas of the body.

Clothing is also a sun barrier. Men and woman should opt for hats to protect their ears and faces.

If you are hitting the beach or lounging near the pool, be sure

to slather on the sunscreen about 30 minutes prior to heading into the sun, and be sure to reapply it every two hours.

Taking this little precaution should help you and your family have fun – and stay safe – in the sun!
