ARC’s Technical & Workforce Development Support to DOE-EM
• DOE-FIU Cooperative Agreement program established in 1995 as a partnership between Florida International University and DOE’s Office of Science & Technology (EM-50)
• Since 1995 the Center has executed over 300 applied research projects for DOE in the areas of:
• Deactivation & Decommissioning (D&D) • Soil & Groundwater Research & Modeling• Nuclear Waste Processing/High Level Waste• Robotics Technology Development • Information Technology Development for Environmental Management
• The Center includes five research facilities, a radiological lab, a high bay facility, and a Large Scale Technology Test Site
• The DOE-FIU Program supports 22 full-time researchers (scientists and engineers), 2 FIU faculty collaborators, and about 25 - 30 STEM students per year being trained in DOE-EM research

DOE EM Research Areas
High Level Radioactive Waste
• Pipeline unplugging and plug prevention –robotic technology development
• Pipeline integrity and analysis –development of robotic inspection tools, sensor analysis, material evaluation
• Fluid dynamics modelling for HLW processes – multiphase flows, turbulence
• Technology development for HLW solids on tank bottoms – sensor evaluations

Soil & Groundwater Remediation
Remediation Research and Technical Support for:• Hanford Site
• Sequestration and fate of uranium in the vadosezone
• Fate of technetium under natural conditions
• Savannah River Site• In situ immobilization of uranium in subsurface• Fate and contaminant transport modeling
(supported by GIS technology and in situ field data and sample collection and analysis)
• Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP)• Fate of trivalent actinides

Deactivation & Decommissioning and IT• Technology testing and evaluation to enhance the
stabilization of radioactive contamination in a facility subjected to fire or extreme heat
• Waste Information Management System -receives and displays DOE waste stream information
• Deactivation and Decommissioning Knowledge Management Information Tool (KM-IT) - storage, preservation and dissemination of information for environmental management
• Key participants in initiating testing protocol development to support updates to DOE-HDBK-3010
