1. Heating Oil Clean-Up in Guadalajara, Mexico

20,000 liters of heating oil spewed from a broken, underground pipe connected to a large holding tank near downtown Guadalajara, Mexico. The responsibility for clean-up fell onto the shoulders of SIAPA, the city water department's "response team" whose job is to protect potable water from contamination. With the help from Simple Green® America Latina's team, the enormous clean-up task became a little bit easier: They had worked together in these types of situations before, and Simple Green® is required inventory of SIAPA. Additionally, America Latina keeps a drums "emergency supply" for these situations.

Here's how they dealt with the spill:

• Evacuated 6,000 people in the middle of the night• Brought in several vacuum trucks to suck-up all visible heating oil that seeped up from

the ground• Had the local fire department assist in spraying Simple Green® as a Vapor Supressant

(at 50:1 dilution) to prevent a possibility of fire• Bioremediated the contaminated soil by saturating it with Simple Green® (at10:1

dilution, manual sprayer), encouraging the existing bacteria to eat the oil• Pumped Crystal Simple Green® (at 10:1 dilution) into the broken pipe and re-

circulated it (with the aid of the vacuum truck) until it was cleaned• Used Crystal Simple Green® with pressure washers to clean the heating oil from the

large storm drains and sewer lines• Ended the job by pumping concentrated Regular (Original Formula) Simple Green®

and Crystal Simple Green® into the city's main anti-siphon tube

The success of this clean-up project, as well as several others in Mexico, was made possible because of America Latina's extensive testing with the local water district and fire department to prove that Simple Green® can indeed be used by Emergency Response and Hazmat Teams for safe, effective and rapid clean-up of a variety of contaminations.

On 15 February 1996 the Sea Empress, bringing crude oil to Milford Haven in south-west Wales, ran aground and over the following week released 72,000 tonnes of crude oil and 480 tonnes of fuel oil into the sea. Despite a rapid and effective clean-up response at sea,


oil came ashore along 200 km of coastline – much of it in a National Park – in an area of international importance for its wildlife and natural beauty.

Simple Green is listed and approved Surface Washing Agent for oil spills since 1990, EPA National Contingency Plan.

4. Baltic Sea Oil Spill Clean-Up

Crystal Simple Green® was used for the clean-up of the oil spill in the Baltic Sea near Lithuania in 2001.


Lithuania - Simple Green has been declared the Official Cleaner for Oil Spills in Lithuania. Simple Green was awarded this recognition after its efforts in cleaning up the November 2001 spill on the Baltic Sea. Simple Green Baltic Ltd., Simple Green's partner in Lithuania, utilized the unique cleaning power of Simple Green to help eliminate an oil spill at the Būtingé Oil Terminal. From an airplane, Crystal Simple Green was sprayed down onto the oil film on the sea surface. The Crystal Simple Green emulsified the oil into the water, allowing naturally occurring microbes (typically bacteria or fungi) to degrade the harmful oil into non-toxic compounds. This process mimics Simple Green's bioremediation process on land, except in this case the bioremediation took place in the water.

Note: The Baltic Sea is located in Northern Europe and is surrounded by the countries of Denmark, Sweden, Lithuania, Germany, Poland, Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Iceland, Norway and Russia. The Būtingé oil terminal is in function from 1999. Būtingė is a small village at the coast of the Baltic Sea, in the north of Lithuania, at the border to Latvia.

Marina Developments operates three marinas on the Non - Tidal Thames. Prevention of environmental pollution is a high priority. Spills of a pollutant in the marina or on the local river effect all users and wildlife.

A few years ago we had a diesel spill in the marina. A vessel’s fuel tank split and filled the bilges up with diesel. The automatic bilge pump operated to empty the bilge. The diesel was then pumped into the marina. This caused about 350 litres of diesel to end up in the marina. We boomed off the entrance to stop the pollution spreading to the main river. Unfortunately, even with the assistance of the E.A. no quick environmentally friendly solution was available to clear the pollution quickly and safely.

Another issue when refueling vessels from our fuel docks on the River. All our staff are trained in receiving and dispensing fuel and all are environmentally aware. Even taking the greatest of care when refueling, every so often there may be a blow - back caused by an air lock, or fuel leaking out of the fuel tank breather.

Solutions Disposing of Oil, Petrol, and Diesel in the river.

We came across a product called Simple Green, which a berth holder recommended. It is a product that they used to clean up spilt diesel in their bilge and general cleaning. We contacted the supplier for information so we could stock and sell it in our retail outlets at both Bray & Windsor.

When we started speaking to the supplier it soon became apparent that Simple Green had more uses. He told us it was used to clear up major petroleum spills on coastlines and out at sea.

We started using Simple Green on the fuel docks to clear up after a minor spill when dispensing fuel into boats. It worked very well and cleared up all traces of fuel spilt. We were using a small hand operated trigger spray to dispense the simple green, which did cause some problems due to the spray not being able to reach far from the bank. We then started using a watering can with a spray bar which helped spread the Simple Green more effectively.

Then we had the idea of using a pressurized garden sprayer to dispense the Simple Green solution. This works very well when on the fuel dock. However when we started using it to clear pollution spills in the marina it was very tedious, as we had to keep refilling and pressuring the container.

When ordering more Simple Green from the supplier we asked how Simple Green was dispensed to clear up larger pollutant spills at sea. Apparently it was sprayed from helicopters or sprayed as foam. We were then informed there is a device called a foamer that could be attached to a water hose. The foamer used a neat solution of Simple Green which was diluted by the water passing though. Air introduced to make it foam. The foam is a better way of applying Simple Green as it stays in a less diluted form, which is more effective at dissolving pollutants.

Multi-Dilution Foamer

Dispenses exactly the desired quantity of Simple Green, mixes the solution with air and sprays a compact, well adhering cleaning foam.

Attach the Multi-Dilution Foamer directly to a water hose and fill the plastic container with Simple Green concentrate.

The cleaning concentrate is automatically and evenly added to the water, according to the ratio preset on the mixing nozzle.

As the Foamer operates without electricity, no installation is required.

We started using the Multi Dilution foamer to clear up pollutant spills in the marinas and found it worked very well. However we could only reach around the local pontoon area where the water supply was.

We needed to find a way that we could lay foam from our workboat so we could reach anywhere on the Marina. We manufactured a 12-volt portable unit that can be used on any boat with 12-volt power. Water can be drawn via a water strainer over the side of the vessel. The water is then pumped by a high-pressure wash down pump to the foamer via a hose. This now allows us to use a foamer effectively on the workboat in the marina or in the local area.



Pollution Protection Devices for Re-Fueling Boats

When re fueling boats two problems can occur. The first being the fuel blows back up the vessels filler pipe, over the boat and the fuel vender. The second is fuel venting over the side of the vessel from the fuel tank vent pipe.

There are two products made by Centek Industries that would help.

VentKleen overflow protection device VentKleen Overflow & burp absorber, attaches to the boats hull over the vent pipe with a dual suction cups.


Safely removing Oily bilge water from vessel bilges

Occasionally on the marina we have small spills caused by bilge pumps operating and pumping out pollutants in to the river. We found a product on the market that is based on a water filter. The filter has a cartridge that causes the oil to bond with the filter media so only clean water is pumped over the side of the boat.

We made a small portable system powered by a bilge pump with a bilge water filter fitted in line. We use this to help customers remove oily bilge water safely from their bilges. This will also be used as a demonstrator so customers could then buy one.

Removing bilge water from the waste oil storage tank

Currently we have a problem of how to dispose bilge water that has been removed from boats. We have in the past put the oily bilge water into the waste oil storage tank on site, as it was the only place to put it. However this cause the cost of removal of the waste oil to rise from £30 to £500 as it was contaminated waste. We have used the largest bilge water filter and connected it to a water pump. Water is heavier than oil so by using a long hose and placing it at the bottom of the waste oil tank we can pump out the water and can have the waste oil removed at the cheaper price.

6. CRUDE-OIL. CLEANING PROCESSES“The Instructions as short as possible”

1. Simple Green is a water-based, non-toxic, non-flammable, non-abrasive, andbiodegradable cleaner & degreaser with excellent rinsing-off properties.

2. Simple Green does not emulsify or decompose anything but is able to penetrate inbetween two materials with a different chemical or physical structure. As it comes tothe rinsing step, the separation of the two different materials is initiated.

3. Simple Green has the capacity to break down all type of hydrocarbons (includingcrude-oil) into very small droplets. After a while, the solubilized oil will float againback on the surface.

4. The 4 elements for a effective professional cleaning are:a - Simple Green -concentrated or in solutionb - Time -the wetting time varies from 50 seconds to 3 minutes c - Mechanic -a slight brushing, scrubbing is always required with water- based cleanersd - Temperature -should be best from +5°C to +40°C.

If the 4 elements are well balanced, the result is perfect. If one of the elements is reduced, you need to increase another to get the same good result.

And this is how to use the product.

• Apply the product in the best concentration and way:Only mix with cold water. No high pressure please! Use the foam-gun to apply.

• Let the product sit for 2-3 minutes.The wetting time indicate the minimum time the product need to START to work.The wetting time depends on the temperature.

• Scrub or wipe the solution on the surfaces to clean so that penetration is deeper.Crude oil will need such assistance, especially when the film is very thick.

• Let the product work again for 2-3 minutes.If enough cleaning solution is available, the product will continue the break down.

• Rinse with water. If possible with high pressure.Rinsing will separate the oil from the surface/material.

What happens if some of the rinseats and oil enter the sea?

- Simple Green helps to eliminate the hydrocarbons by a natural biochemical process. - Simple Green does not contain any preservatives and will not harm bacteria. - Simple Green helps to bacteria to use hydrocarbons as nutrient. It is the bacteria

which will decompose the hydrocarbon in to water and carbondioxyd. Those bacteria are nearly everywhere and there reproduction cycle is at 30 minutes. As long as hydrocarbons are available, the population of those bacteria will growth.


The above mentioned is fine for smaller quantities - of course bigger volumes need first to be absorbed (only use floating absorbents) and disposed before you treat the rest of the oil-film with Simple Green. In the Baltic-sea we are using a 2,5 - 3,0% solution of Simple Green to spray on top of the oil-film. They disappear within 48hours. Analyses from different depths and from the ground show that the oil/product has been decomposed. The product is sprayed by aircrafts or by the fire-ships with the foam-gun.
