Until recently, epoxy powdercoating has been widely used aselectrical insulation for automotiveelectrical components includingalternator stator insulation.Epoxy coating of stators is not theonly solution; on the contrary itrequires a lot of process energydue to the thermoset nature ofthe epoxies.

to use Nomex® instead of epoxypowder coating, allowing them toavoid the curing process of epoxystator coating. As a result, theyreduced their electric consumptionto one-seventh of their old levels(16% of original).
Other benefits were also seendue to this conversion to Nomex®
thermal insulation technology,including better insulationuniformity and higher productivityby reducing process time &increasing material yield. Finally,by eliminating the epoxy powdercoating, their work area hasbecome dust-free.
In the 21st century, reducingemission greenhouse gases andimproving fuel-efficiency is theduty of car industry in order tocoexist with the society. In theabove case, Hitachi has cutelectric consumption correspond-ing to 52.1kl of petroleum peryear. This activity also thuscontributed toward reducing CO2
emissions as a company. As aresult of this work, “The EnergyConservation Center, Japan”,incorporated foundation,recognized Hitachi as a CenterChairman Prize winner in 2000fiscal year. This reduction willalso be very beneficial as Hitachiworks towards ISO 14000compliance.
Hitachi’s activity has expanded toStarter motors, smaller and higherpower model was released. Andthe technology is also applied totraction motor of Electric Vehicles. In this symbiosis of seeking higher efficiency and energyconservation, the way the carindustry should go drive forwardseems clear.
