INTRODUCTION TO THE FACULTY First established in 1959 as the Department of Economics within the Faculty of Arts, the Faculty of Economics and Administration (FEA) was founded in May 1966 to meet the nation’s growing demand for a professional workforce. Beginning with just 14 students and 3 academic personnel, headed by Royal Professor Ungku Aziz, FEA have evolved into a flourishing academic community of 1095 students and 54 academic staff in 2019, among them professors and lecturers with an international reputation in their respective fields.

Drawing the strength of 4 departments; Economics, Administrative Studies and Politics, Development Studies and Applied Statistics. The FEA currently offers the Bachelor of Economics and 7 programmes at the postgraduate level, Master of Economics, Master of Public Administration, Master of Applied Statistics, Master of Development Studies, Master of Research in Economics, Master of Research in Public Administration and Doctor of Philosophy.

PROGRAMME The Bachelor of Economics programme is designed to provide solid grounding in theory and economic knowledge and improve the critical and analytical skills of students. The core and elective courses are shaped to produce graduates with broad based as well as specialized knowledge. Since 2015, the newly introduced specialization system has provided students the option to specialize in one of four (4) areas, namely;

• Economics • Administrative Studies and Politics• Development Studies • Applied Statistics

PROGRAMME STRUCTURE A total of 126 credits are required to complete the Bachelor of Economics programme as follows;

A student will graduate with a specialization after he/she has completed the programme requirements and fulfilled a minimum of 9 courses (27 credits) from a particular specialization.

PROGRAMME DURATION AND ACADEMIC YEAR The academic programme follows the semester system and commences in September (Semester I) and February (Semester II). The minimum period of study is 7 semesters and the maximum period of study is 11 semesters.

ADMISSIONREQUIREMENTS MALAYSIAN CANDIDATES

Fulfill the University’s general requirements as well as the programme specific requirements in order to be admitted to the programme. Potential candidates must possess or complete any of the following:

• STPM qualification or its equivalent with CGPA 3.30 and above; or

• Diploma in economics and administration and other related fields with CGPA 3.30 and above from any institution recognized by the Malaysian Government and approved by the University Senate; or

• Matriculation, Foundation or Malaysian Sports School Pre-University Certificate with CGPA 3.30 and above; or

• A-Level, IB, AUSMAT; and

• Obtained at least Grade B+ in SPM Level in Mathematics; and

• Obtained at least Band 3 in MUET

NON-MALAYSIAN CANDIDATES

A candidate who is Non-Malaysian citizen and who wishes to pursue a programme of study at the University of Malaya must possess and passed at least 12 years education and fulfil the following conditions:

1. Passed with at least grade B in the relevant subject at the A-Level/equivalent; or

2. Obtained a CGPA of at least 3.30 in the relevant subject at diploma level and approved by the University; and

3. Passed the English Language Requirements. Effective from February 2019 Intake, exemption will be given to candidates who obtain one of the following:

(a) Band of 5.0 and above in IELTS (Academic); or (b) Score of 500 (PBT), 173 (CBT) or 60 (IBT) and above in

TOEFL; or (c) Band of 3 and above in Malaysian University English Test

(MUET); or (d) Score 41 and above in Pearson Test of Academic English

(PTE Academic); or (e) At least Grade C in English for General Certificate of

Education (A Level), University of Cambridge; or (f) At least Grade C in English for General Certificate of

Secondary Education (O Level), University of Cambridge; or (g) At least Grade C in Cambridge Assessment English: First

(FCE)
