School Profile Our School Location Whakarongo School is on the corner of Stoney Creek Road & Napier Road, approximately 6km east of Palmerston North. It is in a rural setting amongst trees and landscaped grounds. Our community Whakarongo School is the heart of the Whakarongo community. It is semi-rural, with the benefits of being close to city life giving it a blend of both worlds. The community is positive and supportive. Our Buildings and Grounds The grounds are extensive and well planted, with native and exotic trees, and include a wilderness area for students. There is a confidence course, two adventure playgrounds, swimming pool and tennis courts, a sports turf, large fields and other hard surface areas that children can also use. We have modern and up to date classrooms that include 2 purpose built Modern Learning Environment (MLE) teaching blocks and a learning street. Our School Our current roll is 530 to 550. Staff are very passionate about the individual student and keenly support the positive relationships that exist between home and school. Staff and students strive for excellence in their classrooms with the school curriculum based around the concept of the “Whakarongo Kid” and developing Whakarongo Kids as effective learners. We are participants in the Northern Cluster group of schools and the Palmerston North East Kāhui Ako. At Whakarongo School, we follow an integrated approach to curriculum delivery with the “Whakarongo Kid” providing the foundations for this alongside Literacy and Mathematics, contributing to how students’ making sense of their learning. We use a Conceptual Curriculum that helps us focus on key concepts and develop understanding and information skills. We are currently developing a comprehensive STEM programme for the school. Since 2015 we have reorganised the school into Flexible Learning Environments (MLE). The school is organised in 7 PODS of 3 homerooms each, with all teachers and learners working collaboratively. We are an Apple Distinguished School and the use of eLearning in supporting learning is a strength of our school, and embedded in all teaching and learning. We have a BYOD programme in Years 3-8, and the school supplies iPads for the Year 1-2 students. Classes share samples of their work (especially multimedia) using SeeSaw and other google applications. Whakarongo is a finalist in the 2021 Prime Minister’s Excellence in Education Awards. We have 21 class spaces, a Library, Community Hall, Maker Space, general offices, sickbay, various storage rooms and a staff room. Staffing consists of:

Our school is governed by a committed Board of Trustees who works with the management team and staff to deliver a top class education to our students.
