Installing a Star USB Printer on Mac OS X Using CUPS

I. Mountain Lion Prerequisites Lion, Snow Leopard, and Leopard users should skip to Section II: Installing the CUPS Driver. The Mountain Lion update features a change in security settings on Mac OS X. This section covers the steps necessary to adjust permission settings to install the Star Micronics CUPS driver on this operating system.

When attempting to install the CUPS driver prior to setting the correct permission, the above error message displays.

1. Click the Apple and then “System Preferences”.

2. Click “Security and Privacy”.

3. Set “Allow applications downloaded from:” to “Anywhere”.

4. Click “Allow From Anywhere”. Note: After the driver installation completes, it is strongly recommended to restore this setting to either “Mac App Store” or “Mac App Store and identified developers”. Mountain Lion is now ready to install the CUPS driver. Continue to Section II: Installing the CUPS Driver.

II. Installing the CUPS Driver 1. Ensure the CUPS driver is on the Mac. Most Star printers ship with Installation CDs containing all drivers. If the printer did not ship with a CD or the CD was misplaced, the driver can be downloaded for free from the Star Global Support Site.

2. Open “starcupsdrv-#.#.#.pkg”.

3. Click “Continue”.

4. Select the location to install and click “Continue”.

5. Click “Install” and enter the system username and password if prompted.

6. Click “Close”.

III. Installing the Printer 1. Ensure the printer is connected to the Mac and powered on.

2. Click the Apple and then “System Preferences”.

3. Click “Print & Scan”.

4. Click “+”.

5a. Depending on OS version, the printer is automatically added or must be chosen from a list. In the above screen shot from 10.7 Lion, the printer was automatically added.

5b. If the printer is not automatically added, find the model in the list and click “Add”. It will then appear in the Print & Fax default window. Congratulations! You have successfully installed your Star USB Printer on Mac OS X. Continue on to Section IV to learn how to print a self test and configure settings available in CUPS.

IV. Printing a Test Page and Configuring CUPS Settings

1. Open a browser like Safari or Firefox and type “localhost:631” in the address bar.

2. Mountain Lion users may experience the above error message. If this occurs, copy “cupsctl WebInterface=yes”.

3. Open Terminal.

4. Paste the command and hit enter.

5. Return to the browser and retype “localhost:631”. The CUPS settings will now be available.

6. Click “Printers”.

7. Click the blue printer queue name.

8. In the Maintenance dropdown, choose “Print Test Page”. The printer prints a test page from CUPS.

9. In the Administration dropdown, choose “Set Default Options”.

10. Click on any option in blue to configure printer settings. Congratulations! You have successfully installed your Star USB Printer on Mac OS X and configured it through CUPS.

V. Rectifying Print Delay In some situations, the TSP700II and TSP650 may experience a delay in printing. This section covers how to apply the fix by disabling Raster Printing. 1. Ensure the printer has been installed as described in Section II and Section III of this document. 2. Ensure the printer is set as the default.

3. Open the CUPS driver folder and navigate Tips > MSW_Setting

4. Copy mac.dat to the desktop.

5. Open Terminal. Type “cd desktop”

6. Type “lpr –o raw mac.dat” The printer will reset and print a self test confirming Raster Printing has been successfully set to disable. The print delay issue will no longer be present.
