APPLICATION GUIDELINES Surel’s Place is seeking applications from professional artists for residencies. We especially encourage visual and literary artists to apply.
All applicants must be non-smokers who are 25 years or older.
2015 DEADLINES September 1, 2014 (January-June residencies) March 1, 2015 (July-December residencies)
SELECTION All complete application submissions are reviewed by panels of accomplished artists, including reviewers from a related medium. In addition, interviews may occur.

SUBMISSION All applications must be submitted electronically to [email protected] TEXT DOCUMENTS All text documents, including literary samples, must either be MS Word or PDF format. COVER LETTER Please include: No more than one typed page. A description of at least one of the work
samples in detail, including explanations of its conceptual value.
LETTERS OF RECCOMENDATION Letters of recommendation should come from professional, rather than personal, sources. Letters should address artistic merit and character references. Each letter should not exceed one page and may be submitted directly or by you.
PROPOSAL Proposals should not exceed two pages and should answer the following questions. Be sure to provide a 100 word synopsis of your proposal on the application form.
1. Describe your goal—a statement of what you hope to accomplish during your residency, including what you can accomplish here that you might not be able to accomplish elsewhere.
2. Explain how you would invite interaction with the local arts communities, especially at the end of your residency.
RESUME & EXHIBITION LISTS Please include no more than three pages, and arrange entries by year. If visual, indicate whether exhibitions were individual or group. WORK SAMPLE IMAGES Images must be 300dpi jpegs no bigger than 5*7 Naming convention (lastname.image name.jpg) Images must be accompanied by a text file
that identifies each of the sample’s title, date, and size, along with a description.
LITERARY SAMPLES Samples must be accompanied by a table of
contents page that identifies each of the sample’s title, date, and a brief description. Submit no more than 6 poems or 10 pages of
prose. Each sample must be titled. Applicant’s name must appear on each page
of the sample, along with page numbers
FAQS
When are applications accepted? For residencies in January-June, the deadline is September 1. For residencies in July-December, the deadline is February 1.
How much is the living stipend? The transportation stipend? Stipends will certainly help with food costs, and if you’re traveling from out of town, we’ll try to help you with travel expenses. The stipend will vary depending on fundraising, but we know that artists need to eat and, if you can’t get here, you can’t make art here. As soon as you are accepted, we will send you updated stipend information. If you need the information before hand, please email [email protected].
Can I bring my partner? My child? My pet? Partners are welcome to join residents, but at this time, Surel’s Place cannot accommodate children or pets.
I want to quit smoking, and this is the perfect opportunity. I’ll quit when I’m a resident. I’ll be too busy to smoke. My muses will fend off the cravings. That’s nice. No way. No smoking. Not. Even. One. Seriously. If you’re not already a true non-smoker, don’t apply. The entire property is non-smoking. Seriously. You will be asked to leave. Any evidence of smoking will forfeit your security deposit and end your residency. Seriously.
