1. Grades of Membership

1.1 Corporate Members

Corporate members of the Institute shall be those who are in the grade of “Fellow” and in the

grade of “Member”.

Fellow

Every person seeking admission as a Fellow shall:-

(i) be more that 45 years of age;

(ii) be a member or a person who has fulfilled the conditions and qualifications

necessary to be admitted to the grade of “Member” (see section e and Table A1),

and

(iii) shall rendered a sufficient contribution to the IGSL for its upliftment, which is

recognized and acceptable to the Council, involving a minimum of six (06) years

experience in the field of geology or a cognate subject (see the definition for

‘geology or a cognate subject’ of Rules of IGSL at the end of the text)

or

(iv) have had such knowledge of geology and has acquired such eminence in the

profession, as in the opinion of the Council qualifies such person to be admitted as

a Fellow.

Member

Every person seeking admission to the grade of Member shall:-

(i) be more than 30 years of age;

(ii) have attained such a standards, requirements and has a relevant degree and

education with sufficient professional training and practical experience as

prescribed in the Schedule A of Rules)

(iii) be a person, who for the time being is a member for three years in the grade

of Associate member of the Institute of Geology, Sri Lanka, who by virtue of

such membership is entitled to be admitted to the grade of Member, by formal

application and screening procedure

1.2 Non-Corporate Members

Honorary Fellows, Associate Members, Licentiates, Students and Institutional Members

shall be non-corporate members and the eligibility and other requirement for admission to

these grades as prescribed here.

Associate Member

Every person for admission to the grade of Associate Member shall:-

(i) have three (3) years after B.Sc. Special Degree in Geology accredited by Levels 3,

4, 5 and 6 of Sri Lanka Qualification Framework (SLQF) or five (5) years after

B.Sc. General Degree in geosciences accredited by Levels 3, 4 and 5 of Sri Lanka

Qualification Framework (SLQF) in which one third (33%) of level 3 and 4 and

50% of level 5 of the course content is made up of geoscience subjects and

(ii) have had sufficient training in the field of geoscience, as is determined by the

Council from time to time.

Licentiate Member

Every person for admission to the grade of Licentiate Member shall:-

(i) have B.Sc. Special Degree in Geology accredited by Levels 3, 4, 5 and 6 of Sri

Lanka Qualification Framework (SLQF) or two (2) years after B.Sc. General

Degree in geosciences accredited by Levels 3, 4 and 5 of Sri Lanka Qualification

Framework (SLQF) in which one third (33%) of level 3 and 4 and 50% of level 5

of the course content is made up of geoscience subjects and

(ii) have passed such examinations of the Institute or such other examinations as may

be prescribed or approved by the Council for the purpose, on the recommendation

of the Educational Committee.

Student Member

Every person for admission to the grade of Student Member shall:-

(i) be followed a course of study in Geology or cognate subjects approved by the

Council for the purpose, on the recommendation of the Educational Committee.

Foreign Members

(a) Foreign Ordinary Members and Foreign Institutional Members shall be Foreign

Members. And the qualifications and standards and competence as described in these

Rules.

Institutional Members

(b) The Council may, by resolution of the Council, admit any Firm, Company,

Association, Body or Institution endorsing the general objects of the Institute and

supporting the work of the Institute, as an Institutional Member of the Institute. They

inturn give the Certificate of Authorization (COA) to carry out relevant geoscience

duties to the general public.

1.3 General Requirements to become a Corporate/Non Corporate Member

(i) Any Geologist shall be eligible to become a Professional Member who meets the above

minimum requirements for education, training, or experiences and provides all the

information required in this application.

(ii) All information must be completed on the Membership application form obtained from

the Secretary and submit with relevant certified documents/Certificates to the Secretary.

2. Chartered Geologist

Institute of Geology, Sri Lanka is the recognised SL professional body for geoscientists. It

awards the professional qualification of Chartered Geologist (and the post nominal C.Geol.).

The ‘Chartered’ designation indicates a professional practitioner with a high level of

education, professional competence in their field of practice, a commitment to professional

ethics and who is bound by a professional Code of Conduct. Chartered Geologist is

appropriate for those fellows practicing as professional geoscientists and for whom

geoscience knowledge is an essential element for the fulfilment of their role.

2.1General Requirements

(i) You must have been selected as a Corporate Member of the Institute.

(ii) You must havecompleted at least 3 years membership as a Corporate Member. More

information is given in the Schedule A.

(iii) Schedule A in Regulation shows the minimum acceptable level of experience in

geoscience needed to support an application for chartered status and application

procedure.

Membership Fees

Membership fees shall be as follows -

(i) Members in the grade of Chartered Geologists shall pay a sum of SLR.10,000.00

as their annual subscription.

(ii) Members in the grade of Fellow shall pay a sum of SLR.7,500.00 as their annual subscription.

(iii) Members in the grade of Member shall pay a sum of SLR.7,500.00 as their annual subscription.

(iv) Members in the grade of Associate Member shall pay a sum of SLR.3,000.00 as their annual subscription.

(v) Members in the grade of Licentiates/student member shall pay a sum of SLR.2,000.00 as their annual subscription.

(vi) Honorary Fellows are not obliged to pay any subscription fee. (vii) Foreign Ordinary Members and Foreign Industrial Members shall pay US$

100.00 and US$ 2,000.00 respectively as their annual subscription.

(viii) Institutional Members shall pay a sum of SLR 20,000.00 as their annual subscription.

In addition to the membership fee prescribed in sub paragraph (1) of this rule, new

applicants for admission to the Institute shall pay the following Processing Fees:

Fellow - SLR. 2,000.00

Corporate Member - SLR. 2,000.00

Associate Member - SLR. 1,000.00

Licentiate Member - SLR. 1,000.00

Student Member - SLR. 500.00

Definition for geology or a cognate subject in Rules of IGSL

“geoscience or a cognitive subject” means all subjects generally accepted as relating to

Geology such as Physical Geology, Crystallography, Mineralogy, Petrology,

Hydrogeology, Photogeology, Structural & Field Geology, Geophysics,

Geochemistry, Engineering Geology, Environmental Geology, Isotope Geology,

Petroleum Geology, Marine Geology, Gemmology, Economic Geology, Mineral

Exploration, Palaeontology, Sedimentology and Geologic Hazards.
