IFMA World Championships 2014 and the WWF

The Malaysian Muaythai Federation has signed an agreement with the World Wildlife Fund for the

upcoming IFMA 2014 World Championships. In a world facing constant change, environmental awareness

and measures to protect the earth and its resources are of ever increasing importance. IFMA is committed to

sustainable sport, and to using its international events as platforms for sustainable management and also

awareness-raising measures. Over the last decade, IFMA has taken steps towards hosting sustainable sport

events. This includes infrastructure planning to use existing, centrally located venues and hotels, to minimise

the ecological and carbon footprint, as well as commuting times. IFMA strives to ensure its events are

accessible for all. IFMA seeks to ensure it provides healthy and nutritious food to its athletes and event

participants as well as seeking to reduce wastage. Every event location is unique and different, and IFMA

takes this into consideration. Not only does IFMA give back to the community, donating sports equipment

from its events to the Local Organizing Committee

and its partners, IFMA also seeks to use the locations

of its events to raise environmental awareness. The

2014 World Championship will be held on one of the

world’s most beautiful islands: Langkawi, Malaysia.

This island teeming with tropical fauna and flora is

the perfect place to raise awareness about island eco-

systems, and how responsible tourism is necessary to

preserve these delicate natural environments. A

special project is also underway, in partnership with

the WWF to advocate saving and protecting the

orangutan, the only species of great ape in Asia,

which is indigenous only to Malaysia and Indonesia.

They spend most of their times in trees, where they build leafy nests, and mostly eat the fruits and leaves of

rainforest trees. Because their natural habitat is limited to the islands of Borneo and Sumatra, and because

they depend on trees, they are vulnerable to logging. Deforestation and human activities have made the

orangutan an endangered species. Many events have been planned to raise environmental awareness for the

2014 World Championships. One of them was a country-wide competition for Malaysia children aged 3–8,

to design a logo for the World Championships around the topic given. The cute and playful orangutan

inspired many great designs. IFMA was proud to unveil the official logo for the 2014 World

Championships, which depicts the orangutan as the official mascot for the event. During the event, family

activities have been planned around the island, with a special contest centred on environmental protection.

Come learn with us in Malaysia, from the 1st-10th of May, 2014!

WMC France… Ooh la la!!

The FMDA and World Muaythai Council (WMC) and promoter

Denis Cintura have made an agreement to take muaythai in France

to a new level. Around 20 events are planned all over France over

the next year.

Muaythai With the Olympic Torch Flame

It is no more a secret for anybody that this year

Russia will host the Olympic Games 2014 in

Sochi. Traditionally famous sportsmen will

carry the Olympic Torch Flame.

The first torchbearer of the fire of the XXII

Olympic Winter Games in 2014 went through

the administrative center of the Irkutsk region.

The Olympic torch’s odyssey around Russia

reached new depths as it dived into the world’s

biggest freshwater lake, Lake Baikal in

Siberia. Divers took the burning torch to the

bottom of the lake – another first for the

Olympic relay. But we have more important

news for Muaythai fans. Three athletes from the Russian Muaythai Federation – Artem Vakhitov, Aleksandr

Abramov, Vasiliy Zherebcov - carried the Olympic Torch Flame in Kemerovo region on 30th November.

Female Muaythai Continually On The Rise

The second round of the

World Muaythai Angels saw

a full crowd and tense fights,

further promoting the

popularly of female

Muaythai. The first matchup

Jedrzejczyk from Poland:

both women from the start to

the end stood toe-to-toe using

all weapons of Muaythai and

in the end with the help of the

sold out crowd, it was

Thailand that won with a very close decision. The fighters from both Pools consisted of two world

champions, Duennapa Mor Rattanapundit from Thailand Joanna Jedrzejczyk from Poland, as well as: Sindy

Huyer from Italy; Laurene Tue from France; Chommanee Sor. Teh Hiran from Thailand; Iman Ghbalou

Chairi from Morocco; Teresa Wintermyr from Sweden; and I Linca Lucia Serbu from Romania. The world

is moving forward and the final will be held in Superfour format: semi-final and final held during the same

IFMA Extends its Gratitude to its Technical Officials

Fair play in and out of the competition is one of

the most important pillars of muaythai. IFMA

ensures athlete fairness by organising intensive

educational courses on sport integrity, anti-

doping and carrying out rigorous doping tests

both in and out of competition. Furthermore, it

is IFMA’s firm belief that fair play extends also

to reflect the respect that the athletes and

coaches must have for one another. Judges and

referees are most important for fair play in the

field of play. IFMA educates its R&Js from

national to international level to ensure the

safety of the athletes and the integrity of the

decision making process to ensure that the right hand is raised at the end of the bout. The 2013 World

Combat Games were again another example of excellence in its officials. To highlight this fact, the event

concluded with not a single protest which clearly shows that IFMA’s referees and judges are of the highest

quality. Thank you from all participants and spectators for a job well done!!

Education… Prevention is the Cure

Fair play is part of the foundation of Muaythai.

One of the most important aspects that IFMA

concentrates on is education. National

Federations and athletes must both be equipped to

know about anti-doping issues, how to prevent

doping violations, and how to access the

resources they need to stay informed. IFMA

wants to ensure that athletes are systematically

taught by their IF, NF and coaches about the

dangers of doping, and about how to be

responsible for everything an athlete chooses to

use. It’s not enough for someone else to tell you

that it’s okay to take something, even if it’s your

doctor, coach, trainer, or parent. Check for

yourself, learn to read ingredient labels, ask

questions, and stay alert. IFMA holds two

international education forums per year. This year

one was held in Istanbul, Turkey, and the second

was held for four days on anti-doping and sport

integrity issues in Bangkok, Thailand. The IF has

been stepping up its in and out of competition

testing. The broader IFMA’s ability to test becomes, and the more tests are carried out on wider and wider

groups of athletes, the higher the chances of finding more doping violations. IFMA will continue this policy,

taking strict, but fair action. This year, IFMA was pleased to see the publication of a book for the IF on fair

play and sports medicine by the head of the IFMA Medical Commission, Dr Lotfali. We hope that everyone

will put their copies to good use, by educating themselves and others.
