moorings (21° 30’ S/176° 30’W) along the Eastern Lau Spreading Center. The other moorings associated with this project were deployed during cruise MGL-0902 in January of 2009. It will also deploy four hydrophone moorings near the submarine West Mata volcano 15° S/174° W. The goal of this study is to monitor earthquake generated sounds (T-waves) within the Lau Basin. Since T-wave location accuracy and signal characteristics may depend on seafloor depth, morphology and faulting style, the morphologic and tectonic diversity within the Lau back-arc system provides an ideal and unique environment for our experiment. The lessons learned from this experiment have the potential to significantly impact the interpretation and processing of future hydroacoustic datasets, enhancing our ability to extract quantitative information regarding earthquake source parameters and processes. In addition to the analysis of T-wave signals that are the motivation of this study, the array will record a range of natural and man-made sounds. For example, hydroacoustic data can be used to estimate the distribution and migration pattern of large baleen whales and monitor trends in anthropogenic noise within the Lau Basin. 2.2 Relevant previous or future research cruises: Most of the instrumentation associated with this project was deployed during the MGL-0902 cruise in January 2009. All instruments will be recovered on a yet-to-be scheduled cruise during the summer of 2010. 2.3 Previously published research data relating to the project: None 3. Methods and Means to be Used
