LINING InstructionsCan be from the same base fabric unprinted, or a cheaper LINING material. As it isn't printed, no need to check for wash/durability. Kind reminder, do not mix knits with wovens. If the SELF is a knit, use the same for the lining. For example, poplin with a plain weave and jersey with jersey.

Whitepaper: Filtration properties of fabric and cloth in protective face masks

In light of the Covid-19 pandemic and the limited and often contradictory information floating around regarding the protective properties of different types of fabric, we felt it was necessary to provide a detailed and focused overview of the different filtration and protective characteristics associated with each.

It’s important to state that the scope of this whitepaper is limited to the protective properties of the different fabrics and does not touch upon other important health and safety factors, such as the chemical properties of different inks and finishings that have significant impact on the overall safety of PPE, and most specifically, on protective masks.

This white paper is particularly important as the COVID-19 virus, which primarily affects the respiratory system, has caused an upsurge in the demand for face masks which have become integral in the fight against the pandemic. Unfortunately, we have also witnessed the prevalence of many inefficient and thus dangerous types of face masks.

This whitepaper aims to educate the public regarding the many factors that impact the effectiveness of cloth masks, and how to evaluate these factors to ensure optimal filtration for combating COVID-19.

Based on numerous scientific studies in this area, we have identified which fabrics are effective in providing sufficient protection against the transmission of aerosol particles.

This white paper is largely based on an article published in ACS Nano, outlining a range of particulates (atmospheric aerosol particles) sized between 10nm to 10μm – which reflect the spectrum of aerosol carriers which spread viruses and bacteria.

Best for inserting repeat designs into shapes or using "clipping mask" (clipping full image inside of a shape).The document color mode must be RGBFile > Document color mode > RGBAfter working on the Adobe Illustrator mask template, Export as PNG (Transparent, rasterize): File > Export as... > save as type: PNG > ExportThen see dialog box: File must be 300ppi and transparent for best outcome.Customers using ColorGate may leave it in PDF format, no need to export.

FMO4ONLY for KNITS: Jerseys with or without spandex (lycra), Interlock. If you choose to use fabrics with more stretch, such as 4-way knits or fabrics typical for sport, we suggest reducing the overall pattern by at least 20% smaller in the width.

FMO5WOVEN: Choose the cottons typesThe pattern is to be cut on the bias (diagonal) for mechanical stretch and better drape properties. KNITS: If using knits like mentioned for FMO4, simply use the pattern and cut on the fabric straight, not on bias like for woven.

01. Fold the printed SELF with the wrong side face out02. Serge stitch along the side of the raw edge03. Flip outside in so that the print is facing inside and outside of the tube

01. Fold the printed SELF with the wrong side face out02. Cut across the fold to get two identical fabric pieces, leave the print side

facing each other03. Pin the fabric for the filter pocket 2.5cm from the top04. Serge (Overlock) stitch along both sides, while respecting the seam

allowance (0.7mm/ ¼”)Face mask is ready!

FM05 SEWING INSTRUCTIONS 01. Place the SELF pieces with both print sides facing up, pin along the

raw edges02. Stitch around the whole pieces using the seam allowance value. You

can either use a single stitch or a serge stitch03. Take the bias tape and sew along the whole contour the scarf. Use this

sewing section to understand the stitching04. After the whole piece has a bias finish, turn to the back and either add

elastics or use the bias trim for knot optionFace mask is ready!

What about dryer sheets? Or dried sanitizing wipes? No, they are ABSOLUTELY NOT recommended.PLEASE DO NOT USE DRYER SHEETS AS A FILTER! Even if they are dry, they may contain up to 9 toxic chemicals such as ammonia.List of possible filter options:

PUL FABRICBreathable waterproof fabric, which at the molecular level lets the air and not water run through. Some are food-safe which at a molecular

level only lets air run through. This material is typically used for diaper fabric.Composition: laminated lightweight polyester interlock Shape found: In roll packing with plastic bag outside or customized

HEPA FABRICThe most used filter in DIY face masks. Many recommend using this material as it is easy to find. However, hard to breathe through this fabric.Composition: Polyester, PP, Viscose or customized

TEA TOWEL FABRICMade of strong non woven one time use fabric with a thick weave, has the best filtration efficiency yet poor breathability.Composition: Polyester

PAPER TISSUEAs a last resort when you can’t get your hands on the above-mentioned materials. Choose the natural, non-bleached type with no fragrance so you won’t need to worry about chemicals.

Composition: Paper towels are made up of cellulose fibers, which also make up cotton, wood, and most other plants. Can also be in recycled fibers

COFFEE FILTERSEasy, cheap, at least 100 in a pack and disposable Composition: About 100 g/m2 crêpe paper
