Lodi Apple Lodi is an older variety that was introduced to replace Yellow
Transparent, which it resembles somewhat in appearance and
season. It is a good early season apple for pies and sauces,
but as a dessert apple it tends to be very tart and has been
known to have given many a young boy a "belly ache" when
picked too early. It is a better keeper than Yellow Transparent
and is more firm. ZONE 4-8

Quinte Apple Quinte is one of the earliest quality summer apples to eat.
The fruit is crisp, juicy and tasty with a red blush over a yellow
skin. It doesn't store well, but does harvest over a longer
period and require several pickings. The tree is vigorous and
very hardy. Ripens in July near Lodi and Yellow Transparent.

Red Astrachan
Apple
Red Astrachan is a small to medium sized apple with a pale
creamy skin striped with red and covered with a heavy bloom.
The white flesh is sometimes striped with red and is excellent
for eating. It is tart and an excellent cooking, sauce and pie
apple. Does not store long. The tree is productive but can be
biennial. Ripens very early in July and through to September.

Yellow
Transparent
Apple
Yellow Transparent is just about the earliest summer apple. It
is medium-large with translucent pale yellow skin. Some say it
makes the best sauces because of its crisp, very sweet juicy,
white flesh that is very light in texture. It is also wonderful in
pies. Trees are upright, vigorous growers that bear fruit very
young. Ripens from early July to early August. Zone 3-7

Beacon Apple Beacon is an excellent early summer apple with juicy, mild
sub-acid flesh. It is good for fresh eating and cooking, but
does not store well. The fruit is medium to large size and
ripens over a relatively long period in August. The tree is very
hardy, reportedly to -50 degrees. The apple is orangish-red
striped over a yellow background. The tree is vigorous,
productive and heavy bearing. ZONE 2-6

Benoni Apple Benoni is a late summer apple that is a fine dessert apple. It
is highly flavored, with a mild sub-acid flavor. The fruit is
medium sized, Deep red striped over an orangish-yellow skin.
It is a good bearer, but can be biennial. Ripens in July to

Carroll Apple Carroll is a very hardy apple that ripens early in the summer
season. It is a somewhat dwarfish tree but produces well. It
is an excellent dessert apple and also a good cooking apple.

Grandpa's
SummerGold™
Apple
Grandpa's SummerGold is one of the best early summer
apples around. Slightly later picking than Lodi, which it
closely resembles. The large fruit ripens early in August. The
flesh is white and the skin yellow-green and smooth. It has
excellent tart flavor early on, but as it hangs on the tree it gets
sweeter and the flavor improves. For a summer apple it
stores quite well and hangs on the trees for several weeks.

JerseyMac Apple JerseyMac apple is a very early McIntosh type apple that
ripens in early summer in late July. It is an attractive, medium
sized apple with predominantly red skin over a light yellow
background. The flesh is whitish-yellow, crisp, juicy, and has
a tasty, aromatic flavor similar to McIntosh. It is an early
bloomer. Keeps fairly well for such an early, summer apple.

Oriole Apple Oriole is a very hardy, early summer apple with excellent

Pristine® Apple Grandpa's Nature Friendly™ Pristine® is one of the best early
disease resistant varieties for the garden. It is a very early
ripening yellow apple that resembles Yellow Transparent in
appearance, but is much firmer, less acid, and better eating.
The fruit is yellow, very smooth, and attractive. It keeps well
on and off the tree for several weeks. The fruit is tasty and
quite firm and crisp for being so early. It ripens early in

Blaze Apple Blaze is an earlier Jonathan-type apple that ripens about 3-4
weeks earlier in mid-summer. Medium sized, red over a

somewhat like Jonathan but less tart. Vigorous and
productive. Moderately susceptible to scab and cedar apple
rust, but moderately resistant to fire blight and powdery

Centennial
Edible Flowering
Crabapple
Centennial Crab is a very hardy, edible crab that can beautify
the yard also. It is a compact grower that produces small,
crisp, juicy edible crabs that are sweet and nutty flavored
about 1.5 inches in diameter. It ripens in mid-August and is
an excellent pollinizer for other apples, bearing heavy loads of
red flower buds that open into white blossoms. Good for
eating, canning and jelly. It is highly scab resistant. ZONE 3-

Chenango
Strawberry Apple
Chenango Strawberry is one of the most beautiful summer
apples, with medium to large, conical, shiny, yellowish-
whitish, smooth skinned apples. The skin is almost
translucent. The fruit is firm, juicy and white, but tender and
very aromatic. Pick when the skin stars to turn milky. It picks
over a long period of several weeks, but overripe fruit will get
dry and mealy. Good for eating and sauce. The tree is very
hardy, but very susceptible to fire blight. ZONE 4-9

Dolgo Edible
Ornamental Crab
Apple
Dolgo Crab apple is one of the earliest to bloom in the spring
with its pink buds opening into large white flowers which are
very fragrant. It sets an abundant crop of red, edible
crabapples which are about 1 1/2 inches in diameter. It is
also an excellent ornamental variety! It ripens in late August
to early September. ZONE 3-7

Duchess Apple Duchess is a very old heritage variety that is still a treat in the
early summer. It is a good cooking apple, but just ordinary for
fresh eating. Duchess is a medium to large, greenish yellow
apple with bright red striping and splashes. It has gusseted
dots that are distinctive. The flesh is white, fine, firm and
juicy. It is not a long term keeper, but is a good seasonal
apple ripening in mid-August. ZONE 4-8

Apple
Ginger Gold® is an early golden-type apple that ripens in the
summer, late in August to early September. It very much
resembles a Golden Delicious, but has a more spicy flavor
than Golden. The fruit is medium-large and firm and crisp. It

Irish Peach is an ancient apple that came from Ireland. It has

Apple
Maiden Blush is a fine heirloom summer apple that produces
regular crops of flattish round yellow apples with a beautiful

mid-August to early September over a prolonged period. It is

Apple
Molly's Delicious is not a true Red Delicious, but is very
similar in appearance and flavor. It ripens almost three or
more weeks ahead of Gala and McIntosh. It is large and

Rambo Apple
Red Summer Rambo is a "double red" strain of regular
Summer Rambo. It has all the same qualities. The large fruit
is red striped. The flesh is very crisp, juicy, yellowish green,

sauce. The tree is very vigorous, hardy and productive. It

Redfree Apple Grandpa's Nature Friendly™ Redfree is an excellent tasting,

choice for the backyard orchard where you don't want to have

eating and will keep rather well for an earlier season apple.

Apple
SummerMac is an early summer apple ripening in late August
and a few weeks before regular McIntosh. The fruit is
medium to large and has the appearance of a McIntosh,

fresh eating, cooking, and sauce. ZONE 5-7

Elstar Apple
Valstar™ is an improved red strain of Elstar, which is popular
in Europe. The fruit ripens late in the summer and has

Wealthy Apple Grandpa's Choice™ Red Wealthy is an old-time favorite in

Blondee® Apple Blondee® Apple is a very new "golden Gala" type apple that
Grandpa saw a few years ago and was impressed with. The
fruit ripens a few days before regular Gala but has a greenish-
yellow skin that changes to a rich yellow as it ripens. The fruit
is exceptional and has great eating qualities like Gala. It
appears to be denser than Gala and will keep for several
months. The tree is similar to Gala is other respects. ZONE

Chestnut is a large, russeted, sweet and juicy edible
crabapple with a rich, nutty like flavor that can be used for

Cortland Apple Cortland is an old-time heritage apple that Grandpa grew up
with. Cortland is large, and round and similar in looks to

Gala Apple
(Original strain)
The original Gala strain to come into the US is known as
Kidd's D-8 now. It produces medium sized fruit with striping
on a golden yellow-orangish skin that is distinctive. The fruit
is crisp, dense, aromatic and white with an subacid, sweet-tart
flavor that keeps you coming back for more. Gala is now one
of the most popular apples in the world. Ripens in early to
mid-September and it stores well. Very productive and should
be thinned early for good size. ZONE 4-9

Golden Delicious-
Early Strain
Apple
Grandpa's Early Golden Delicious is a strain of regular Golden
Delicious that ripens a couple weeks ahead of normal.
Grandpa's strain is more russet resistant than the original
Golden Delicious, but has all the same qualities--- large,
sweet, juicy golden yellow fruit. It is a favorite for pies, sauce,
cooking, juice and all purposes. Stores well. Harvests early
in September. ZONE 5-8

Gala Apple
Grandpa's Big Gala is a special selection of Gala that just
grows larger than a normal Gala. The fruit is similar in other
respects. Not highly colored, but an excellent eating and all

pollination from other varieties than Gala and Golden
Delicious. ZONE 5-8

Red Rezista®
Apple
Grandpa's Early Red Rezista® is an attractive dark red
colored apple. The fruit is crisp, sweet and very juicy with an

There is some similarity in appearance to a Jonathan, but

Apple
Grandpa's Choice Honeycrisp is the current "star" of the apple
industry and with consumers. It is "explosively crisp" with an
unbeatable sweet, juicy flavor. It is naturally large and will

yellow background color when ready to pick. Very hardy and
productive. Keeps well when picked in peak condition. If you

Northern Lights
Apple
Northern Lights produces large, attractive, glossy, bright red
blushed apples. It has a flavor similar to McIntosh and with
semi-firm, tasty white flesh.. It is very cold hardy and best
suited to back yard orchards in cold climates. It ripens near
McIntosh season and will keep a few months in cold storage.
It is a good choice for the backyard garden in very cold areas.

Black Gilliflower produces large, dark red, almost black

Grandma's most fondly remembered apple as a little girl was
Fameuse or as it is commonly called, Snow Apple. It is a very
old heritage variety known for its hardiness, good flavor and
eating quality, and late summer, early fall ripening time. The
old-timers made good use of it for apple cider because of its
aromatic and distinct flavor, and because it is only a fair to
good keeper. The flesh is tender and "snow white" like its
name suggests. The fruit is red over a cream background

Frostbite™ Apple Frostbite(TM) was just recently named by the University of
Minnesota. Known as MN 447, it is an older cultivar that has
been used as a parent in the breeding of other successful U
of MN apple varieties. Because of its unique, sweet,
aromatic, and unusual flavor people who know MN 447 had
been encouraging the University to release it. The fruit is only
small to medium in size, being 2¼ to 2½ inches in diameter,
but is very firm, crisp and juicy. It will store for 3-4 months in
common storage at 34-37°F. The flesh is a creamy, light
yellow. It is an attractive maroon red over a yellow gold
background. It usually exhibits striped coloration, but often
can be somewhat dappled. It sometimes russets lightly,
depending on the season. Like most Minnesota varieties, it is
extremely hardy to USDA Zone 3b (-30 to -35°F). It has low
to medium vigor. The tree is spreading and produces

Galarina™ Apple Galarina® is a new gala-like disease resistant apple that
shows high tolerance to scab, mildew and fire blight. It is
hardier than Gala and resembles Gala in many respects. The

Apple
Grandpa's Choice™ Golden Delicious! Grandpa and many

Golden Noble is one of the apples with the highest content of

Honeygold Apple Honeygold is a great substitute for Golden Delicious in colder,
northern areas where it is much more hardy. It is reported to

and a reddish bronze blush. It has a Golden Delicious flavor,
but is a little sweeter and blander. It is high quality and stores

Jonafree™ Apple Grandpa's Nature Friendly™ Jonafree is one of the scab
immune varieties, that is most like it namesake, with which it
ripens. Jonafree is nearly identical to old-time red Jonathan in

though. It is a bright red apple, with glossy skin and generally
no russetting. It does not develop "Jonathan" spot when
stored, like normal Jonathan does. Can be used as an all

Pippin Apple
The Brits think Cox's is the best! Cox's Orange Pippin is
considered by many to be one of the best dessert apples. It
produces medium sized, conical, somewhat dull looking fruit
with red stripes over a tough, smooth orangish skin.
However, the fruit is firm and tender with juicy, aromatic
yellow flesh. It has a distinctive taste. Excellent for all uses
including cider. An early and heavy bearer, it requires heavy
thinning as it blooms late and misses many of the frosts.
Reported to be self-fruitful. It ripens in mid-September to
October, and has a lower chilling hours requirement than
many apples, suitable for more southern, warm area growing.

The original Jonagold is one of the finest eating and cooking

you plan to store them for long periods, otherwise, eat them in

Tomkins County King is a very large apple that has proven

showing water-core and greasiness overtime. The tree is
