A message from your pastor...
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
Time seems to go by so fast. It doesn’t seem as though 2/3’s of 2016 is over, but
it is. It doesn’t seem as though it is time for the nominations committee to start
the process of filling vacancies in our church committees, but it is. Several years
ago I had the opportunity to attend a class dedicated to the subject of filling the
vacant spaces on church committees. As I was thinking about our upcoming
charge conference I thought this would be good information to share with everyone as our nomina-
tion process begins. So the following are suggested scriptures for you to read and reflect on, as per-
spective committee members. Prayerfully this will help, as you determine where your gifts can ben-
efit Calvary UMC and God’s church. We all know that the church cannot grow and be a vital part of
the community without the members taking active parts in its activities.
Are You Open to Using Your Gifts for Ministry? (created by LOGOS Ministry)
Set aside a specific time each day for at least a week to pray, study and listen. Keep a log or diary of your reflections on scripture and prayer.
Open your heart. Here I am Lord. Read the following passages. What messages about "call" do you understand from these scriptures? Hebrews 5:1, 4; Genesis 22:1; Genesis 31:11; Genesis 46:2; Exodus 3:4; 1 Samuel 3:4-9; Isaiah 6:1-8; Hebrews 10:5-10
Open your ears. Listen for God's still small voice. Read Kings 19:11-13. Read and hear God's word (Bible Study, sermon) (Psalm 119:9-10) Reflect on the meaning of what you read and heard in the light of the decision before you.

As I write this column I realize how fast August seemed to fly by. Looking
back, we had some great summer music last month. We had the Rich Miller
Band and Kara McDaniel as well as Eileen Southerly and Daris Albright on pi-
ano. Thank you to everyone who offered their talents this summer!
Summer is over, school has started and the pace of life is increasing rapidly.
Before life gets too busy I hope many of you will join our choirs as they start
up for the fall. I hope we can add a few folks to join us in the Chancel Choir
and Handbell groups. Our first Chancel Choir practice will be September 1st @
7:00pm in the choir room. Our first Adult Handbell Choir practice will be September 4th in the sanctuary follow-
ing Sunday school. The first Youth Handbell Choir practice will be September 4th in the sanctuary @ 5:30 pm.
Hope to see you there!
For September, the Chancel Choir’s first anthem of the season will be an arrangement of “Change my Heart” and
“Lord, be Glorified.” The next Sunday is Patriot Sunday and happens to fall on September 11th. The last time 9-
11 fell on a Sunday we did a piece called “In Memoriam” which incorporates the melody to Taps and Dvorak’s
Largo from the New World Symphony also known as “Going Home.” We will be doing it again in case you missed
it in 2011. The third Sunday of the month will feature our handbell choirs. Currently, we are down to six ringers
in the adult handbell choir which is one less than last year. If we don’t get any more ringers my plan is to have
the youth handbell choir help in the same way the adult choir has been assisting the youth. We’ll still try to have
two musical selections per month.
The last Sunday in September the choir will sing “I’d Rather have Jesus.” I selected this song based on the lection-
ary reading that deals with the issue of the love of money.
Mark C. Albright
“Whom have I in heaven but you? And earth has nothing I desire besides you.
My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my
portion forever. Those who are far from you will perish; you destroy all who
are unfaithful to you. But as for me, it is good to be near God. I have made
the Sovereign Lord my refuge; I will tell of all your deeds.”
– Psalm 73:25-28
JOIN THE CHOIR OR HANDBELLS
Chancel Choir practice will be Sep-
tember 1st @ 7:00pm in the choir
room.
Adult Handbell Choir practice will
be September 4th in the sanctuary
following Sunday school.
Youth Handbell Choir practice will

@ 5:30 pm.
A message from your pastor continued...
Open your mind. Read Romans 12:1. Analyze the match of your gifts to this ministry opportunity. Consider the time, relational, and energy commitment. Evaluate priorities.
Open your eyes. Read John 4:1-26. Observe your life circumstances. Let your daily life and work be an avenue through which God shows you God's will.
Open yourself to others. Read Proverbs 15:2. As you consider this decision, choose a few close friends to pray for you. Seek the advice of a few people you respect.
Responding with a Yes! Rejoice on this new opportunity to serve and use your gifts. Pray that God will continually equip you for this ministry.
Responding with a No No is a faithful response when you sense that God is not calling you to a particular ministry. The general need for workers does not constitute a specific call. You must do the hard work of listen-ing and trusting that God is directing you. If you have done that and are convinced this is not God's will, then say "no" and trust that God is calling someone else.
Trust that God is at work in you.
Soon you may be receiving a call asking you to serve on one of the Calvary’s committees. If you faithfully follow this process then your response will most likely be led by God. In the meantime, start praying now asking God where he wants you to spend your energy and time in God’s church. Ask God to be with the nominations committee as they pray over each opening. When we all took our membership vows we promised to uphold the church with our prayers, our presence, our gifts, and our talents. Please remember this vow you took when you are asked to serve.
Blessings to you all, Pastor Lynn

A message from Niccole…
Hoping everyone had a great summer! The “Deep Blue” one room Sunday school took the
opportunity to learn about the Fruits of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22). The children are filled with
such positive spirits that the lessons were easily learned and are continually shown in their daily
actions. Praise the Lord!
Beginning in the middle of August, our group has grown by welcoming the return of the
children from the Hispanic congregation! The spirits, hearts, minds and bodies of these children
added numbers and welcome ideas to the Elementary and Middle-high classes. We are so very
excited to see growth in our program!
Sunday, September 11 is the date for Rally Day 2016! Pastor Lynn will be presenting a spe-
cial sermon during the 9:30 service, geared toward Bibles and special meanings that lie within.
During the Sunday School Hour, there will an inclusive class during which children will move up
to the next year’s Sunday School class, and adults will be recognized for their loyalty to their
Sunday School classes and continued Bible study. Light refreshments will be provided for all to
partake and enjoy. We look forward to the participation of all who attend Sunday School as well
as those who wish to join in the Celebration of God’s Word.

There are so many of you who we wish to thank this
month for the extras you do around the church. From
our bulletin board ladies, to the women who created
the beautiful wreaths, to the individuals who donated
new flatware to the kitchen and a new paper shred-
der to the church office. To those who helped in the kitchen with be-
reavement dinners and the pie fundraiser. To those who have been hand-
ing out church information in the neighborhood. To those who come in
each month to fold the newsletter and to those who come week after
week to take care of finances and contributions . To those who see the
need to paint and clean-up around the church and get it done we say THANK YOU!
