Integrated Pest Management Policy

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) techniques and procedures aid in choosing the least toxic

method of controlling insects, rodents and weeds. It shall be the policy of Venus Independent

School District to apply the following IPM guide lines for pest management. Since these pest can

cause significant health and damage problems to people, structures and property, Venus

Independent School District shall develop an IPM plan that is specific to the pest infestation and

potential damage to life, property and our environment.

Each pest control situation will be evaluated on its own merits. The particular type and application

method of pest control will be influenced by hazard to human health, damage or destruction of

District property and the general health and well-being of the community and our environment.

The use of chemicals, biological applications, mechanical means, or the habits of users will be

given consideration in determining the least toxic method of pest control which will be guided by

the most current Environmental Protection Agency's information for school districts.

Non-chemical forms of pest control will be chosen for use on the inside as well as outside

whenever possible. If a pesticide or other chemical is chosen,· it will be because no other method

or modification will control the pest.

Venus Independent School District is subject to the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide and

Rodenticide Act (7 United States Code 136 et seq.), the Environmental Protection Agency

regulations in 40 Code of Federal Regulations, Occupational Safety and Health Administration as

well as state and local regulations.

Venus Independent School District is responsible for informing the students and staff when a

pesticide application is to be performed. Pesticide applications may only be applied to school

buildings or on school property during periods in which students are not expected to be present

for regular instruction or school activities for at least 12 hours after the application. Notifications

will be posted at designated locations throughout campus areas that are to receive pesticides

treatments. Upon request students may also be given notices to take home to parents who also

wish to be informed in advance of pesticide treatments.

The storage and disposal of pesticides will be performed by EPA registered label instructions and

state regulations. Efforts should be made' to limit pesticides purchases to amounts that can be used

in a twelve month period. All pesticides will be stored in secured and locked areas that are

inaccessible to students and other unauthorized persons.

Up to date records that are the requirements of the state will be kept on the use, monitoring and

disposal of pesticides. Monitoring data will be kept in order to track pest populations, control pest

populations and the need for treatment.

AU personnel who supervise or apply pesticides must follow all state requirements and label

instructions. The District's approved Integrated Pest Management Policy and program will be

followed by any personnel who supervise or apply pesticides.

NOTICE TO PARENTS

This school periodically applies pesticides as part of an integrated pest management

program. All persons applying pesticides at this school are required to receive special

training in pesticide application and pest control. In addition, this school has a policy that

requires use of nonchemical pest control tactics whenever it is possible. Pesticides may

periodically be applied if monitors and thresholds indicate the need to do so.

To The Parents of Venus High School Students,

This letter is to inform you of the Venus ISD attendance policies as discussed at orientation and are in the Student Handbook.

All absences will be considered unexcused unless you provide the following documentation: Note from a doctor Higher Education Visit (College day for Juniors and Seniors Only) Required court attendance Holy Days (Must provide administrator with information before the absence) Active Duty parent visits Military MEPS days

Parent notes will no longer excuse a student’s absence. However, we encourage parents to send a note that will be placed in their student’s attendance file.

The state of Texas has also implemented a change in their Compulsory Attendance Laws. The following is the changes that will affect your family.

Students between the ages of 12-18 with unexcused absences for 10 or more days OR parts of days within a six month period the school must file a truancy complaint with the court.

Students that are 18 and meet the criteria above will have a truancy complaint filed against them. A full description of the law can be found in the Texas Education Code Section 25.085. The law for student’s to receive credit in each class remains the same. A student must attend 90% of the time the class is offered. If your student misses more than 8 days the first semester, credit can be denied. If they miss more than 10 days the second semester, credit can be denied. Please remember for the 90% credit law, excused and unexcused absences are counted in the 90%. If you have any questions, please feel free to call Venus High School at (972) 366-8815.

DRESS AND GROOMING

The “Student Dress Code” for Venus Secondary Schools has been established to build student self-esteem, bridge socioeconomic differences between students, and encourage positive behavior, thereby promoting school safety and improving the learning environment. All clothing must be properly hemmed/cuffed with no rips, holes, tears, or fraying. ID’s must be worn on a lanyard around the student’s neck. ID may not be altered in any way. Campus administration will have complete and final judgment on all matters concerning interpretation of the student dress code. In order to help insure acceptable behavior on the part of the student, it becomes necessary to establish certain guidelines to aid parents and students in selecting suitable attire for the school year. Schools also recognize that parents are responsible for the dress and general appearance of their children. It is understood that when clothing styles change to any large degree, the policy may be reviewed to ensure that the intent of the policy is maintained. Any clothing, insignia, or hair style that suggests an association with a group or gang or that distracts from teaching and learning, is unacceptable.

The hair must be neat, clean, and well groomed. Hair rollers or long handled combs may not be worn in the hair. Girls or boys will not wear distracting or abnormal hairstyles, such as mohawks, half shaved heads, or hair of distracting, unnatural color, etc.

No type of head covering, cap, or hat is to be worn in the main building or classrooms. Students who wear any head covering in the building will have that article of clothing taken up and it will be given to the principal. This article of clothing will be returned to the student at the principal's discretion. Repeated violations of this rule will result in appropriate disciplinary action.

Students in violation of dress code will be required to call for a change of clothes. If parents are unable to bring clothing, or no contact is made, the student will serve the remainder of the day in ISS.

Other grooming considerations:

No tongue rings, navel rings, nose piercing, ear gauges, or other visible body piercing paraphernalia will be tolerated. No makeup allowed on boys. No earrings allowed on boys. Inappropriate tattoos must be covered. No facial hair for students. No jewelry or clothing with inappropriate language or symbols. The administration and faculty reserve the right to deem any student’s attire inappropriate or distracting.

If a student is sent home to correct a dress code violation, each class missed will result in an unexcused absence. Repeated or serious violations of the dress code will result in further disciplinary action. The principal may temporarily amend or suspend any or all of the dress code for specific occasions or events.

VENUS INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT STUDENT/PARENT/PRINCIPAL CONTRACT FOR ELIMINATING GUNS AND WEAPONS FROM SCHOOL

Guns and other weapons clearly are a hazard to a safe learning environment and the welfare of human beings. According to the National Center for Health Statistics, every day 14 young people, age 19 and under, are killed as a result of gun use. According to The Metropolitan Life Survey of the American Teacher, 1993: Violence in America’s Public Schools; 11% of teachers and 23% of students say they have been victims of violence in or near their schools. While the elimination of guns and weapons from schools is the responsibility of all segments of the school and society, three individuals have especially crucial responsibility: the student, principal, and parent. This contract draws attention to the specific responsibilities of those individuals.

WE, THE UNDERSIGNED, AGREE TO THE FOLLOWING COMMITMENTS:

Student I agree not to bring a gun or any weapon to school or to any school event I will tell my peers to seek adult assistance when conflict situations begin to get out of

control. I will not carry another person’s gun or weapon If I see a gun or other weapon on campus or at a school event, I will alert an adult about its

existence

Parent I will teach, including by personal example, my children about the dangers and

consequence of guns and weapons use, and I will keep any guns and all weapons I own under lock and away from my children.

I will support the school’s policies to eliminate guns and weapons and work with the school in developing programs to prevent violence.

I will carry out my responsibility to teach my children how to settle arguments without resorting to violence, to encourage him/her to use those ideas when necessary, and to follow school guidelines for reporting guns and weapons they see to an appropriate adult.

Principal

I will ensure that students have an anonymous way to report to an adult any guns or other weapons they see on campus.

I will promote conflict resolution instruction for all students as part of the curriculum. I will communicate the school’s policies on guns and weapons to all participants in the

school community and focus upon the responsibilities we all have. I will report all guns and other weapons violations to law enforcement officials, according

to established procedures.

CREDIT BY EXAM—If a Student Has Taken the Course/Subject (All Grade Levels)

A student who has previously taken a course or subject—but did not receive credit or a final grade for

it—may, in circumstances determined by the principal or attendance committee, be permitted to earn

credit by passing an exam approved by the district’s board of trustees on the essential knowledge and

skills defined for that course or subject. Prior instruction may include, for example, incomplete

coursework due to a failed course or excessive absences, homeschooling, or coursework by a student

transferring from a non-accredited school. The opportunity to take an examination to earn credit for a

course or to be awarded a final grade in a subject after the student has had prior instruction is

sometimes referred to as “credit recovery.”

The school counselor or principal would determine if the student could take an exam for this purpose.

If approval is granted, the student must score at least 70 on the exam to receive credit for the course or

subject.

The attendance review committee may also offer a student with excessive absences an opportunity to

earn credit for a course by passing an exam.

VISD Credit by Exam windows are as follows: Oct 25-28, 2016, Jan 17 -20, 2017, April 18-21, 2017,

June 20-23, 2017.

[For further information, see the school counselor and policy EHDB(LOCAL).]

CREDIT BY EXAM FOR ADVANCEMENT/ACCELERATION—If a Student Has Not Taken the Course/Subject

A student will be permitted to take an exam to earn credit for an academic course or subject area for

which the student has had no prior instruction, i.e., for advancement, or to accelerate to the next grade

level. The exams offered by the district are approved by the district’s board of trustees, and state law

requires the use of certain exams, such as College Board Advanced Placement (AP) and College Level

Examination Program (CLEP) tests, when applicable. The dates on which exams are scheduled during

the 2016–17 school year will be published in appropriate district publications and on the district’s

website. The only exceptions to the published dates will be for any exams administered by another

entity besides the district. In this case, a student and the district must comply with the testing schedule

LETTER OF HUMAN SEXUALITY INSTRUCTION

Dear Parents and Guardians: In response to Senate Bill 283, Venus ISD is providing written notice of our intent to provide human sexuality instruction to students. Senate Bill 283 specifies: Before each school year, a school district shall provide written notice to a parent of each student enrolled in the district of the board of trustees’ decision regarding whether the district will provide human sexuality instruction to district students. If instruction will be provided, the notice must include: (1) a summary of the basic content of the district’s human sexuality instruction to be provided to the student, including a statement informing the parent of the instructional requirements under state law: (2) a statement of the parent’s right to: a. review curriculum materials as provided by Subsection (j); and b. remove the student from any part of the district’s human sexuality instruction without subjecting the student to any disciplinary action, academic penalty, or other sanction imposed by the district or the student’s school; and (3) information describing the opportunities for parental involvement in the development of the curriculum to be used in human sexuality instruction, including information regarding the local school health advisory council established under Subsection (a). A parent may use the grievance procedure adopted under Section 26.011concerning a complaint of a violation of Subsection (i). Venus ISD wishes to inform you that your student will be exposed to an abstinence education program at Venus High School. The Scott & White Wellness & Sexual Health Program empowers teens with information necessary to develop healthy habits and relationships. Developed by Patricia J. Sulak, MD, the program has helped thousands of students, parents and communities engage in honest, open, fact-based communication about adolescent wellness and sexual health. Previously known as Scott & White Worth the Wait, the program continues with the all-inclusive, data-driven curriculum founded on the medical, legal, psychological and socioeconomic information regarding adolescent health risk behaviors. Based on the probable consequences of adolescent risk behaviors, the safest and healthiest choice for teens is to promote risk avoidance by establishing healthy habits and relationships. The in-school intervention program is offered for middle and high school students, with components for parents, healthcare providers and the community.

Title 2, Chapter 28, Section 28.004 of the Texas Education Code requires school districts to have a School Health Advisory Council (SHAC). SHAC is a school board appointed advisory group of individuals who represent different segments of the community. The Venus ISD SHAC is made up of parents, community members and district staff working together to improve the health of all students and families through coordinated school health programs. Questions regarding SHAC should be addressed to Carol White at 972-366-8815. Should you have questions about the district’s human sexuality instruction or would like to review the curriculum, please contact the principal of your student’s school. Please be aware that you, as a parent, have the right to exempt your child from these lessons and an alternative assignment will be provided.

VENUS HIGH SCHOOL PARENT

INVOLVEMENT POLICY

OVERVIEW

The goal of Venus High School’s parental involvement efforts is to promote a highly effective working partnership among parents and staff. In accordance with these efforts, Venus High School has adopted the following parent involvement policy to ensure that we provide our parents substantial and meaningful opportunities to participate as equal partners in the education of their children. Additionally, as per Section 1118 of Public Law 107-110 No Child Left Behind Act of 2001, the district will support its campuses in their efforts to build the capacities of the school staffs, as well as the capacities of parents and community members, to work as equal partners in educating each child.

The current policy was drafted by the Venus High School Parent Advisory Council (VHS-PAC), presented to a representative group of parents, edited, made available to all parents for further review and comment, and finalized with consideration of additional input from parents. Each year, the policy content and opportunities for parent involvement will be evaluated and revised.

WRITTEN POLICY DEVELOPMENT

VHS will utilize the following procedures for development and revision of the Parent Involvement Policy:

1. Initial Draft: The VHS-PAC will draft the policy.

2. Parent Orientation: The VHS-PAC will support the distribution of the initial draft of the Parent Involvement Policy and invite parent comments.

3. Final Policy: The VHS-PAC will finalize the policy.

4. Dissemination of the Parent Involvement Policy: The VHS-PAC will distribute the completed policy to all parents.

5. Evaluation/Revision of the Parent Involvement Policy & Program: The VHS-PAC will design and conduct an annual evaluation/revision of the parental involvement policy.

Parking & Vehicles on Campus

Parking Rules and Guidelines

The operation of a motor vehicle on campus is a privilege granted by the Venus ISD Board of

Trustees. Vehicles requiring a state license are classified as a motor vehicle including cars,

trucks, mopeds and motorcycles. All vehicles driven on Venus ISD campuses are subject to all

local and state traffic laws. A student or employee has full responsibility for the security and

contents of his or her vehicle. Students, faculty, staff, and employees who operate or park a

motor vehicle on the Venus High School campus are required to have a valid parking permit

affixed to the vehicle. Parking permits are nontransferable to persons or vehicles other than those

to which they are originally issued.

The Venus ISD, Venus Police Department, School Resource Officer, or their designee is given

the responsibility of enforcing procedures that provide a safe campus environment for our

students. To aid in this process, Venus Police Officers and SRO are licensed by the State of

Texas and are granted all powers of a peace officer. The jurisdictions of these officers are both

on and off school property within the boundaries of the Venus Independent School District. The

jurisdiction of these officers may be extended to any school-sponsored event, which might take

place outside the boundaries of VISD. Citation, arrest, and other legal action may be taken for

any violation of federal law, state law, and/or city ordinances. According to the Texas Education

Code §37.102(b), all laws regulating traffic on highways and streets, also apply to the operation

of vehicles within the school property. The following regulations and guidelines were established

by the Venus ISD Board of Trustees in an effort to maintain a fair and impartial system for the

enforcement of parking and traffic regulations on VISD school campuses.

Campus parking privileges may be revoked due to parking violations or other violations

pertaining to inappropriate behavior. Upon arriving at school, students must immediately vacate

their cars and the parking lot and enter the school building. Students in the parking lot during the

day without a pass will be subject to disciplinary action. People, including enrolled students of

this district, who are not authorized to be on school grounds after school hours may be charged

with trespass on school grounds in accordance with §37.107 of the Texas Education Code.

Parking Permits Required for Parking on High School Campus

A student or employee driving a motor vehicle or motorcycle to school must be a licensed driver

and have the required liability insurance coverage. The student must register the motor vehicle

and obtain a parking permit from the Venus ISD SRO. The parking permit must be affixed to the

registered vehicle. Students are prohibited from parking in faculty spaces or visitor spaces that

have signage indicating “Visitor” on pavement, curb, and/or erected signage. Students are not

permitted to use staff parking stickers or use staff parking spaces. It is a violation to exchange,

sell, or give parking stickers to other students. Doing so will result in fines, ISS, and possible

loss of parking privileges for all involved.
