The Chinese Manufacturers' Associationof Hong Kong and Hong Kong ProductivityCouncil

• To provide outreach technical assistance to help SMEsovercome their constraints and comply with environmentallegislation on effluent treatment.

• To develop appropriate electrophoretic painting process forlocal surface finishing industry to replace the conventionalpaint spraying process which is highly polluting (anelectrophoretic painting laboratory was set up in the HKPCfor technology development and demonstration purposes).

• To develop appropriate low waste electroplating technologiesto cost-effectively prevent waste generation at source(technical and economic information of various technologiesdeveloped was summarised in a manual and a support video).

• To develop a simple, space-saving and patentable metalstripping technology which can be utilised by many smallindustries in Hong Kong for the removal of heavy metal.The new technology involves a one-step treatment using avertical sand column as a "metal stripper". Metal-bearingindustrial wastewater is pumped upward through the sandcolumn with a simultaneous injection of lime so that bothcalcium and metals will become "insoluble" and theneffectively plated out on the sand surface in the forms ofcalcium carbonate and metal carbonate/hydroxide.
