The Ethiopian Coffee Ceremony:A Feast for the Senses

My Ethiopian friends invited me to their home for a coffee ceremony. The invitation was

very nice, a sign of their kind hospitality. I didn’t know what to expect. I’ve never been to a coffee

ceremony before.

When I walked into my friends’ dining room, I saw a colorful mat in one corner of the room.

Long green grass was scattered on top of the mat. A clay coffee pot, a pan with a long handle, a tray

of cups, baskets, a wooden bowl and a small open furnace with charcoal(looks like a small grill) sit

on top of the mat. We sat down on small stools, facing the mat.

My friend entered the room in a long white dress with a colorful design down the front. She

sat on a stool behind the mat, facing us. First, she washed the coffee beans. Then, the beans were

roasted in the long handled pan over the charcoal furnace. She shook the pan so the beans didn’t

stick and burn. It sounded like coins being tossed around in a tin can. Then the coffee beans began

to pop, sounding like popcorn popping. My friend walked around the room with the pan so

everyone could smell the tantalizing aroma of the roasting coffee.

Next, the coffee beans were pounded into small pieces with a thick wooden stick inside the

wooden bowl. Then, the ground beans were placed into the clay coffee pot. Water was added and

put over the open furnace to heat to boil. I love the smell of coffee brewing!

Finally, my friend poured the coffee from the pot into the small cups, one for each guest.

Popcorn was also put out as a snack to go with the coffee. I wrapped my hand around the little cup,

feeling the warmth and inhaling the smell of the coffee. I added a little bit of sugar to it. It was very

strong and a little sweet. That was definitely the best coffee I have ever tasted! What an amazing

experience!
