Dear Brothers & Sisters, I wish you the Lord’s abundant blessings during this Easter Season and these wonderful days of Spring! What a gift to hear the Easter Scripture readings that assure us of our Lord’s love and grace, present to us at every moment. May we continue to grow in God’s love and know Jesus’ presence through those who love and care for us each day. As we honor the special gift of our Blessed Mother during the month of May, we lift up in gratitude and prayer all who are our mothers. It’s been said that mothers have a 24/7 job on the front line of humanity. On May 13th we celebrated Mother’s Day remembering that it was first proposed during the Civil War as a day of comfort and peace. It was established as an annual celebration by President Woodrow Wilson in 1914. Sacred Scripture speaks of God’s command to love. We are called to listen to God, care for the needs of others, and lay down our lives for the good of another. In a unique way, this is the very vocation of motherhood. Our mothers, together with our fathers, are the ones who first teach us to respond to those in need. On Mother’s Day 2018, let us be grateful for our mothers who have nurtured and supported us. May this prayer be a special part of our intentions each and every day.
Msgr. Larry Bakke
May 2018
Mother’s Day Prayer
Loving and Creator God,
as a mother gives life and nourishment
to her children.
so you watch over your Church.
Bless our mothers that they may know the
strength and gifts of Your Holy Spirit.
Let the example of their faith and
love shine forth.
Grant that we, their sons and daughters,
may honor them always.
We pray, too, for all women for whom
Mother’s Day is a difficult time:
those who suffer the condition of infertility,
those who have experienced a miscarriage,
mothers who have suffered the death
of a child,
and those who agonize because of abortion.
May your abundant grace be with all
this day and always.
Amen.
Hearing Loops Help People with Hearing Loss
The Apostolate is always working to promote the full inclusion of every person in the life of the Church. Many parishes
are realizing that people with hearing loss are often unable to clearly hear the readings and prayers at Mass. Thankfully, there are ways to overcome such challenges by taking advantage of new forms of technology such as hearing loop systems. Hearing loop systems provide a magnetic wireless audio signal that is picked up by hearing aids set to the “T-coil (short for telecoil)” setting. Most new hearing aids have this setting. Special wires that are often installed in the floor of a building comprise the hearing loop that broadcasts audio signals from microphones directly to hearing aids. The result is dramatically improved speech perception and intelligibility without distracting background noise. Hearing aid T-coils are turned on by the push of a button or toggle switch. Many cochlear implants also include T-coils, which allow users to take advantage of hearing loop technology. For those with hearing loss who do not use hearing
aids or cochlear implants, inexpensive portable receivers with T-coils are available so that they can enjoy the clarity of speech sounds transmitted through hearing loops. Wanting to learn more about hearing loop systems, Deacon Jim Hoegemeier of the Apostolate recently visited Immaculate Conception Parish in Kieler where a hearing loop system was recently installed with financial assistance from the Apostolate. The system was installed by My Hearing Loop, LLC, based in Platteville. Mike Mair, the owner of the company, led the demonstration of the hearing loop system. Also participating in the
demonstration were Rev. Bernie Rott, pastor of Immaculate Conception Parish, Jeff Richard, chair of the parish finance committee, and Carol Watson, a parishioner who uses a hearing aid. Special equipment was provided so that those participating in the demonstration could hear the difference between what one hears using an actual hearing aid not connected to the hearing loop system and what one hears through the same hearing aid connected to the hearing loop system through use of the T-coil setting. The difference was amazing,” said Deacon Jim. “It wasn’t that the voices were louder when heard through the hearing loop. The hearing loop made the voices sound so much clearer. I now understand why hearing loops are receiving such a positive response.” While hearing loop technology has become the standard in several European countries, it is just beginning to gain popularity in the United States. Faith communities, including several parishes in the Diocese of Madison that have already installed hearing loop systems, are leading the way. Several parishes are considering installing hearing loop systems. The Apostolate encourages people with hearing loss and parish leaders to learn more about the benefits of hearing loop technology, as well as how the Apostolate can help parishes with expenses related to the installation of hearing loop systems. In the past five years, the Apostolate provided grants to several parishes which could not afford to install hearing loop systems on their own. For additional information, contact Deacon Jim Hoegemeier of the Apostolate at (608) 821-3051.

Motherhood
During the month of
May, we give thanks
for our mothers and
reflect on the gift of
motherhood. Pope
St. John Paul II said,
“[Woman’s] unique
contact with the new human being developing
within her gives rise to an attitude toward human
beings, not only toward her own child, but every
human being, which profoundly marks the
woman’s personality.” … Women first learn and
then teach others that human relations are
authentic if they are open to accepting the other
person: a person who is recognized and loved
because of the dignity which comes from being a
person and not from other considerations, such as
usefulness, strength, intelligence, beauty, or health.”
-John Paul II, Evangeliusm Vitae quoting what he
wrote earlier in Mulieris Dignitatem.
It is clear that throughout the past 50 years,
mothers have repeatedly been the best advocates
and innovators in disability ministry! We give
thanks for the courageous women who taught the
world how to love and accept their children
regardless of their abilities.

Resources for your growth and enjoyment
CUSA is a way for people with chronic illness or disability to care for others like themselves through an online or postal service Christian support group.
If you bear some sort of physical, emotional, or mental disability or endure a chronic illness such as diabetes, arthritis, Multiple Sclerosis, Fibromyalgia, Post-Polio Syndrome, cerebral palsy, depression, bi-polar syndrome or any one of dozens of others, you know that no one completely understands what you are going through like someone who also bears that same illness or disability. CUSA is made up of individuals who bear these “crosses.”
If you are looking for someone with whom you can share your thoughts, someone in whom you can find support, we invite you to explore the possibility of becoming a member of CUSA. We think we are unique in that we provide comfort and companionship as well as explore the spirituality that underlies the Gospel command, “Whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me.”
CUSA is a community of people who are chronically ill or who have some sort of physical or mental disability. We support one another through prayer and correspondence. Through our concern for one another, we forge a special relationship with our God as well as with one another. Our unity is born of a common situation and a common faith. Our bond goes beyond that of fraternal organizations or social clubs, for it is forged by the redemptive suffering of Our Lord Jesus Christ.
Our organization is based on the words of St. Paul
who wrote in his Letter to the Colossians: “Now I
rejoice in my sufferings for your sake.” (Colossians
1:24). It is not easy to rejoice in suffering or to endure
chronic illness or disability day after day. To help with
both, CUSA provides a way for members to encourage,
care, and listen to one another. Please accept our
invitation to become part of CUSA, to get to know us
and how we have found God in the “dark corners” of
life with illness or disability.
Come to a renewed awareness of Christ in your life as well as God’s will or purpose in your particular illness or disability. The application process begins by emailing or simply writing a letter of inquiry to our CUSA Administrator., Fr. Lawrence Jagdfeld, O.F.M.

TV Mass: Prayer of Spiritual Communion
The Apostolate is proud to offer a TV Mass every Sunday morning for those who are unable to make it to their Church. At the time of communion, this ’Prayer of Spiritual Communion’ is displayed on the screen.
The prayer was written by St. Alphonsus Liguori in the 18th century. When this prayer is prayed, actual grace is given to your soul.
St. Thomas Aquinas once defined a Spiritual Communion as “an ardent desire to receive Jesus in the Most Holy Sacrament [in Communion at Mass] and in lovingly embracing Him as if we had actually received Him.”
Thank you for praying with us on Sunday mornings! Stay close to Jesus and place all of your trust in Him!
Prayer of Spiritual Communion
My Jesus, I believe that You
are present in the Most Holy Sacrament. I love You above all things,
and I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot at this moment
receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart.
I embrace You as if You were already there and unite myself wholly to You.
Never permit me to be separated from You.
Amen.
