Dear Friends and Colleagues A warm welcome to the 2014 conference from the whole of the APME Executive! I am proud that this conference is being held in my adopted county of Gloucestershire. The county is famed for cheese rolling, Harry Potter’s Uncle and Aunt (the Dursleys), Laurie Lee and the homes of Prince Charles and the Princess Royal. We have well-known cricket and rugby clubs, the Badminton Horse Trials are held in the county every May and not forgetting the Cheltenham Gold Cup in this very town.

I would particularly like to welcome delegates who are attending their first conference and there is an invitation in your folder to the newcomers’ reception where you can meet the Executive. Please do come along so we can introduce ourselves. We are honoured to be joined by representatives from our associate organisations who will be presenting at the conference: Stephen Amitrano, Manager of Print and Mail Services, Burlington County College from ACUPSimon Giles, President of NIPPA and Print Manager at Australia’s Defence Publishing Service. Please make them welcome to our conference. We do hope you enjoy this year’s conference - we’ve got a full programme lined up for you and have tried to respond to the suggestions made for speakers. You asked for additional opportunities to discuss issues with other members so we’re re-running Question Time and devoting a session to interactive groups to discuss various topics. For full details please see the later pages. On Monday evening we’re doing something a little different with a Hats Party. Any hat will do - even a folded newspaper - but you must have one! At the time of writing this introduction we were still pondering what penance you will have to serve if you haven’t got a hat. There will be prizes on the night for the best and most unusual hats. Immediately after the AGM on Tuesday we’re going to be discussing setting up special interest groups, one for Design, the other for Photography. Please ensure you are there to discuss how you would like these groups to work. Our exhibitors make the conference possible with their generous sponsorship. I urge everyone to visit their stands and take time to understand what they are presenting over the next couple of days. I know they have taken a lot of care to tailor their exhibition to our needs; there is always something new to see or learn! Don’t forget to take your raffle card with you to collect stickers so you can enter the draw. Simon Giles is the Production Manager of Defence Publishing Service and will celebrate 25 years of service with Defence in November 2014. The first 11 years were spent in Logistics and in the year 2000 an opportunity arose to escape the “Dark Side” and he landed the coveted role as Production Manager of Defence Publishing Service. DPS continues to embrace digital technology and has just installed a Canon IPF8400 Wide Format printer to expand the business through the in-house production of pull up banners.

Simon is also serving his first term as President of NIPPA and enjoys the diversity that both roles offer. Outside of work Simon is kept busy by his gorgeous wife Monique and following the sporting careers of his four children. His eldest daughter Laura is currently in South Africa representing Australia at the Indoor Netball World Championships. Away from the family Simon is passionate about cricket and has been Vice President of the Hoppers Crossing Cricket Club for the past 18 years. For those who don’t know HCCC is the Australian Club where Stuart Broad was taught to play cricket.

Stephanie Davies, Laughology’s Creative Director, has over 10 years experience which has gained her an unsurpassed reputation for designing and delivering interventions for businesses, practitioners, clients, young people and adults.

She is recognised as one of the UK’s leading voices in happiness humour and laughter. In past 12 years Stephanie has worked on projects and events in the public and private sector developing everything from creating happy spaces and environments in schools and health settings to motivating and inspiring individuals, teams and organisations. The unique approach of Laughology founded and developed by Stephanie Davies looks at how individuals can be resilient human beings and live lives that flourish and are happy and healthy. Qualifications include: An M.A in The psychology of humour and laughter for personal growth; B.A Hons in Community Arts and Advanced Skills in Creative Teaching and Cognition, JMU.

Our Speakers

Iain Major started his professional life as a secondary school teacher in the UK teaching Science (Chemistry is his first degree) to students between the ages of 11 and 18. After 13 years and having reached the position of Assistant Headteacher he looked for a career change and completed a Masters Degree in Computer Science at Bristol University. Following this Iain wrote software for over three years.

In 1997 Iain met Ian Adkins, then a freelance engineer, through their children and wives being friends. Together they established Bits From Bytes, the first company to commercialise the RepRap project and to sell complete kits of parts to build your own 3D Printer. The two quickly realised the potential for the market and the business grew rapidly.

Bits From Bytes was acquired by 3D Systems in 2010 and Iain has been working in various roles within the business ever since. Iain is both UK Education Co-ordinator and UK Health and Safety Co-ordinator and is based from the Clevedon office in the UK.

Peter Lancaster is an entrepreneurial digital imaging and print e-commerce professional with a proven track record of success and global recognition. He is a specialist in strategy, implementation and marketing of new technologies for the Digital Imaging and Printing industry. Working with mobile, any print can now be made interactive through Image Recognition technology and conditional logic driven response mechanisms, adding value to the printed piece.

Peter served as Managing Director of St Ives Graphic Media, the digital division of Europe’s largest Printing business. He was also MD of Grasmere Digital Printing, where he launched Europe’s first Web-to-Print system. He was employee No. 7 for Indigo in the UK and before that, an early member of the Scitex team.

Paul Atkins is the Design Team Leader Loughborough University. Having graduated from the University of Wales in June 1995 with a degree in Graphic Communication he returned to his native Midlands and started work as a Junior in a small agency a few weeks later. Having 18 months experience he decided to move on and look for a change of scenery.

After being told by a friend about a design position at Loughborough University where he had completed his HND, he thought the move was the next best thing to being a student again and applied. Being offered the job meant a move of home but one he would not regret. A few years later he was offered a Senior Designer role and in January 2010 would take up the role of Design Team Leader.

Stephen Amitrano is Manager, Print & Mail Services Burlington County College. Employed in the printing industry since 1976, Steve has been involved in many areas of lithography including operations and management of bindery, press (offset and digital), pre-press, MFD contracts, plant supervision, and mail room operations manager. Steve regularly establishes, coordinates and prioritizes staff and project schedules of the Print and Mail Services department of Burlington County College and administers expenditures of internal and auxiliary operating budgets.

With the mission of the College in mind, Steve coordinates the work activities of both full and part time Print Shop and Mailroom staff, as well as student workers. In addition to Print and Mail Facility equipment and operations, Steve is responsible for sustained functionality of 36 fleet copiers and thirteen coin operated student copiers located throughout six satellite campuses and centers.

After attending the London College of Printing, Brian Pickles has spent the last 45 years within the print industry, the first 20 years of which working within the financial print sector in London , dealing with takeovers and mergers as well as blue chip company annual report and accounts.

After deciding to relocate out of London, Brian moved to Yorkshire (apparently God’s country) in 1988 and has worked in both commercial print as well as set up a book publishing company for the visually impaired.

In 1996 he entered the very different world of print in higher education working for Bradford University, where in 2002 he instigated a shared service with Bradford College and as MD ran the Limited Company for 11 1/2 years.

In December 2013 he made the decision to retire, but still hopes to do some print related work when and if required. Brian and his wife Fiona live in Triangle, West Yorkshire with their 3 dogs, Oscar, Ruby & Flo.

AIM - The presentation will be interactive, informative and fun. It will leave delegates with techniques and tools to use in their lives and at work with others that will help to enhance happiness and encourage more positive communication and engagement for the remainder of the conference.

The Print Shop has transformed from an Analogue shop with 2 Docutechs and a Xerox 1250, with annual volumes of 20 million monochrome impressions and 300,000 colour impression (with an annual outsource budget of $50k).

From my first Mac in 1997 bought with my student loan I have always believed technology enables us to do things more efficiently, push boundaries and work smart. Technology has always interested me so I naturally look to move forward with the tools we are given to use, whether that be hardware or software at home or at work. I forget how I found out about InCopy but having read what it could do I began to see potential savings of time and cost in a workplace that was always looking to do things more efficiently. InCopy brings designers and editors together.

(Suppliers Welcome) Session 7: “Question Time” Question time will feature a panel of four suppliers and our own Paul Tetley from the University of Sheffield. It is expected that the suppliers will be representatives from the paper industry, exhibition and conference materials, a managed print services company and a web to print supplier.

You will find a post card in your delegate pack on which you can submit your question. The questions submitted will be grouped and a selection put to the panel.

Steve Amitrano of Burlington County College will share a case study of one institutional printing business review. This session will discuss the importance of building your strategic business plan which covers visions and missions; key ingredients for costing for budgeting, pricing, and equipment justifications; staffing and work-flow; and operational polices; and tips to personalize your own business plan.

Steve is the Manager, Print & Mail Services, Burlington County College, Pemberton, NJ. The Imperial Hotel is a 4-star hotel on the Northern Promenade of Blackpool, Lancashire

overlooking the beach and the sea. It was established in 1867 and is situated in a large

Victorian red brick building, in what, before development, was once Claremont Park. It is

now operated by Puma Hotels Collection. The hotel features a gold and blue facade, 180

rooms, the Palm Court Restaurant and the Number 10 Bar, frequented by many British

Prime Ministers. It has served as a conference and party venue for a wide range of societies.

The Queen has stayed at this hotel when visiting Blackpool, as did Charles Dickens.

APME TRAININGBusiness Planning, Entrepreneurial Management and Managing Change

As part of our commitment to the training and development of APME members a 2 day course is being offered free of charge. It takes place at Loughborough University on Wednesday 27 and Thursday 28 August 2014.

The only costs your institution would have to pay are travel and accommodation. You are free to make you own arrangements but bed, breakfast and dinner are available on campus for approximately £119.
