Communication Guide
Introduction
I’m green™ is the seal used for the line of
Braskem products made from renewable
sources.
This was developed to be used as guide for the
application of the I’m green™ seal in products
and disclosure materials.
Summary
1. Value proposition
2. Green PE rules of use
3. General recommendations
4. Using I’m green™
1. Value proposition
1. Avoiding the risk of green-washing perception on Green PE products.
2. Motivating a communication synergy among Green PE products and Braskem
communication on I’m green TM.
3. Helping consumers to identify real sustainable products, leveraging their value
perception on green PE products.
2. Green PE rules of use
1. Do not mix HDPE or LLDPE from renewable sources with resins produced from
NAPHTHA or Natural Gas, except to assure technical performance of the
product and comply with the contract.
2. In the case of mixing due to technical reasons, the customer shall commit to
maximize the renewable source contents of the product, so that the amount of
HDPE or LLDPE Green resins is over 51%, according to ASTM D6866* method.
3. Any disclosure of a product with Green HDPE or LLDPE in the composition shall
clearly mention the renewable source content of each product as provided in
ASTM D6866 method.
*ASTM D6866 method is the checking of the renewable content made by the American laboratory Beta Analytic.
3. General recommendations 1. It is important to know the composition of the product and the percentage of renewable
sources used in the product.
2. It is necessary to collect a sample with 0.5 meter of film or one unit of the product, and
send for analysis at the BETA ANALYTIC laboratory on the USA*, according to ASTM
D6866 method.
3. Any disclosure material involving application of the I’m greenTM seal shall only be
released after verifying and confirming the renewable source percentage contained in
the product.
4. In order to use the I’m greenTM the product shall include the following text: “ > X%
Biobased verified by ASTM D6866”.
5. It is necessary to identify the predominant component of the product to facilitate its final
destination, or to use some label to identify that the product is recyclable, as follows:
High Density Polyethylene – HDPE
Packing for food, textiles, cosmetics and disposable packing produced with high
density polyethylene. Resistant to low temperatures, light, water proof, rigid and
resistant to chemicals, HDPE is also used for manufacturing caps for soda bottles,
containers for freezer mineral water gallons, besides toys and electric domestic
appliances, broom and brush bristles, bags (lining and water proofing), adhesive and
other applications.
Low density Polyethylene – LDPE and Linear low density Polyethylene – LLDPE
Flexible, light, clear and water proof. Low density polyethylene (LDPE) is used for
producing thermocontrolable films such as boxes for soda bottles, wires and cables for
television and telephone, films for general use, industrial bags, irrigation pipes, hoses,
flexible packing, water proofing paper (tetrapak), and other. Linear low density
polyethylene (LLDPE) is mainly used for producing packing for food, diapers, feminine
pads and industrial bags.
6. In case of plastics bags, it is recommended to include the text: “Plastic bag made with
Braskem’s Green Polyethylene. Renewable raw material”.
