Dear Colleagues, Monday 11th May was a very significant anniversary for me as it marked my 100th day as the CEO of IFPSM. The time has flown by as I have been so busy learning and enjoying about my new role. I have been extremely fortunate to be supported by our Board of Directors. Since I took up my new role I have benefited hugely from their decision to ensure that we didn't lose the vast experience of Charles Holden by asking him to lead my induction into the Federation. I owe a debt of gratitude to the Board, Charles and also to Sally Pawson who is the oil in our Federation engine-without Sally I certainly would have had a seizure! She has been very gracious and understanding in answering my many questions, of which several were asked repeatedly until the answers stuck in my memory! “My first 100 days are all about listening and learning. The last thing you'll get from me is a grand vision in the first 100 days. You need to give yourself time to be a sponge.” Paul Pressler CEO The GAP

While this support might have been expected, I didn't fully anticipate the help and sound advice that I have received from you, our members. Without exception, I have thoroughly enjoyed all my contacts and meetings with you and I am thrilled and excited at the prospect of supporting you, your associations and your members over the next 100 days, and beyond. I have encountered and I hope overcome some challenges but have also enjoyed some tremendous opportunities during my first 100 days. Two of these were particularity memorable. I travelled to Nigeria to be the keynote speaker at the CIPSMN Annual Conference in Lagos, very daunting but equally thrilling. My sincere thanks to Abdul Mamman and Daramola Festus for their superb support and making it possible for me to travel to Nigeria. It was an honour to meet the CIPSMN President Mohammed Aliyu who is a truly inspirational individual. I also presented to the PROLOG Annual Conference in Estonia and met some of their very committed members who are successfully raising the profile and benefits of professional procurement and supply management within their country. Many thanks to Illimar Paul and Tonis Hintsov for supporting the IFPSM Board meeting and the Europe Regional meeting while also welcoming us to their fabulous capital, Tallinn. The leadership teams of CIPSMN and PROLOG are brilliant examples of what a professional association can deliver to their members, their organisations and their nations. These two experiences have confirmed to me the amazing strength and diversity of our Federation, I am privileged to work with so many highly motivated individuals and organisations with a shared vision and purpose. The next 100 days will be equally important to me as I now have a good grounding and will start to deliver additional opportunities and benefits to you, our members. We have an excellent base and our retention rates are very impressive and we are financially sound, however we need to deliver continuous improvement to our value proposition.

An initial example of this is that we have partnered with a UK based specialist association consultancy, Sterling Membership, to support our Knowledge Bank feature and they have already delivered a white paper written by Laurence Smith who has significant experience in corporate strategy and is a marketing and change management expert. His paper can be found at: http://ifpsm.org/wp-content/uploads/2014/05/White-Paper-Sterling-reinventing-professional-associations-for-the-21st-century.pdf and identifies our individual and shared challenge of “Re-inventing Professional Associations for the 21st Century”. All of us must continually develop our associations in order to stay relevant in a fast changing environment and this must be our primary challenge. I am thrilled to be given the opportunity as CEO of IFPSM to play my part in meeting this challenge. I look forward to your continued support of your Federation and working and meeting with you over the next 100 days. “The greatest adventure is what lies ahead” JRR Tolkien

Malcolm Youngson (To access Malcolm’s announcement as CEO of IFPSM please go to: http://ifpsm.org/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/Announcement-of-newCEO-5-Jan-2014.pdf) At the recent IFPSM Board meeting in Tallinn, Estonia, Søren Vammen, President of IFPSM announced that as he had reached the mid-term of his Presidency and hence in line with IFPSM protocol he made the recommendation to ensure future continuity that Cheryl Paradowski, from SCMA, Canada, be endorsed as President Elect. Cheryl will assume the Presidency in 2016. The recommendation was supported through a unanimous vote. On the announcement of her election to President Elect, Cheryl said: “It was an honour to receive the support of my colleagues in Tallinn to have me take on the role of President of IFPSM in January 2016, following Søren's current three-year term. I'm finding an interesting parallel between the international federation and the supply chain management sector itself - both are in transition to a more complex role with greater strategic importance, and I'm looking forward to supporting the growth of a more influential IFPSM on a global level. I'm also looking forward to continuing the work that has recently begun on better understanding and defining the membership value proposition within the federation. Finally, I was pleased to learn that I would be the first woman in the role - encouraging a more equitable role (and equitable compensation) for women in supply chain in Canada has become a very high profile issue and I think having a woman in the primary leadership role for IFPSM sets an important example world-wide for our profession.”

PSML - Polish Association of Logistics Managers was registered 12 years ago in November 2002. It was founded by 9 logistics managers and experts - creative, open-minded and determined to build a strong position for logistics in Poland. Their aim was to build an organization representing the interests of the Polish logistics managers, to create and promote good practices, as well as to integrate the logistics environment. PSML progressed as rapidly as the consciousness of Poles that the areas and tasks, which soon merged into the supply chain, are essential for the dynamic development of enterprises. Our members are both individuals and enterprises operating in the supply chain area. PSML has a growing membership base of over 300 individual members consisting of supply chain manager professionals as well as 25 corporate supporting members. PSML, although it retained its original name, is an association of supply chain managers.

The Association pursues its objectives by organizing workshops, training, seminars, congresses and other meetings through collaboration with national and international organizations, the dissemination of information about the activities of PSML and other initiatives aimed at the development of the association and the environment. The nature and theme of events and projects organized by PSML meet the real needs of the environment.

Our annually held flagship event is the Supply Chain Managers Congress, consisting of two parallel events - the Congress of Polish Logistics Managers PL-LOG and the Congress of Polish Purchasing Managers POL-ZAK. We have already organized 11 Congresses enjoying enormous popularity and the twelfth is planned for October 2014.

In the era of globalization across all areas of our lives a necessary condition for the development of the organization is to interact with like-minded internationals. PSML concluded that without the cooperation of recognized international organizations it would not be able to offer its members international knowledge, contacts and experience. In 2010, the PSML joined two international organizations, IFPSM and ELA. As a result, it is easier for our members to participate in training courses, seminars, trade schools, vocational schools, as well as promote their professional achievements by taking part in international events. We already have organized in 2012, interactive workshops and discussions with the participation of representatives from the IFPSM’s membership. We want to be not only an active member of the Federation but also make greater use of the knowledge and experience of their members through joint participation in EU projects, applying for certification of our training and also through ongoing sharing of knowledge and experiences.

Norway and develop further the importance of purchasing here. We have to learn from each other by cooperating internationally and with different cultures. I was easily convinced, and agreed to stand for election and was thrilled and honoured when I was elected. I look forward to making NIMA and Norway known in an international purchasing context. This is a unique opportunity that I will use in every possible way. My first Board meeting was a very positive experience. It reinforced my motivation to contribute to a Board consisting of many people with different resources, visions and actively solving the issues. We have the advantage of different backgrounds so we can learn from each other. Some have backgrounds in purchasing focusing on the theoretic part, while I have a background in marketing and market economy. I returned from my first meeting feeling very motivated with new thoughts about how we together can elevate the interest for the profession of purchasing for people in the years to come. Despite being a small country with only 5 million inhabitants, NIMA (The Norwegian Association of Purchasing and Logistics) has close to 2,500 members and nearly 300 volunteers working to raise the profession of purchasing. We celebrate our 100 year jubilee in 2015, making us the oldest purchasing association in the world. As General Secretary of NIMA, I will use my experiences to strengthen IFPSM as the leading purchasing and supply management federation in the world. My vision for IFPSM is that we will have a stronger profile and be more active. Through clear information we will make sure that we have a strong approach to the profession of purchasing. As “the mother association” to the world’s purchasing associations, it is important to keep to one’s own values and be clear that we are not a commercial operation, but that it is the profession of purchasing and its development that is our vision. IFPSM can give us the opportunity to exchange experiences and strengthen the individual member associations throughout the world. Through the IFPSM network our members will have the chance to update their professional information, easier access to the most competent speakers worldwide, inspiration through cases and articles, and also the possibility to influence through participation. For me NIMA is more than a job as I see this as a contribution to society. To bring knowledge to the people is very important in your working life. Privately I also search for knowledge and read a lot when I am not working. I also relax with family life and training our dog, music and general social life. www.nima.no

When I was first asked to stand as a candidate for the IFPSM Board election, I thought; “How on earth do I find time to contribute to this in my hectic everyday working life where I work to promote the importance of the profession of purchasing in Norway”. Of course, this was the answer. If there is a place where I can do this, it must be as a representative of IFPSM. I realized I could take part in influencing and developing further the profession of purchasing and the procurement organisations across the world. I could then bring back to

MARINA LINDIC, ZNS, SLOVENIA

I have more than 25 years of experience in Purchasing, Procurement and Supply Management. Previously I worked for a company called Trimo and since May 2005 I have worked for Ursa, the international Insulation group, which is part of the Spanish concern Uralita. My current position is Logistic, Procurement and Customer Service Manager OU M& SE – Operating Unit Mediterranean and South East Europe but shortly I will be responsible for the whole Supply Chain for this OU. In addition to my professional career, in 2003 I was one of 5 co-founders of ZNS – Slovenian Purchasing Association. For 8 years I was Vice President of the association and Alternate Delegate of IFPSM. In May 2011 I was made President of ZNS and Senior Delegate of IFPSM. We are a small association with 160 - 190 individual members. The mission of the Association is to play an active role in the development and knowledge accessibility, improvement of professional standards and to enable purchasers more access to information that they need for effective work in the purchasing profession in both the private and the public sectors. We don’t employ any staff at ZNS as we all work on a voluntary basis in our free time. In 2014 we will produce our own Slovenian PMI with the help and support of DILF& Kairos. I am also one of the authors of the book: Strategic Purchasing, issued in 2008 and one of the authors and professional editor of Manuals: Guide to the Head of Purchasing, issued in 2013. You can find the links by clicking: http://www.zfm.si/avtor/marina-

lindic.html and http://www.zfm.si/artikli/prirocniki/prirocnik-za-vodjo-nabave.html In addition, I lecture at professional conferences and seminars about Lean in Purchasing, Negotiation Table Process and Strategic Purchasing. My election onto the IFPSM Board means a great deal to me and confirms that we are doing the correct things and that ZNS is on the right path! It also means a great deal to ZNS; we will be able to learn from bigger, more mature associations and this way we will be able to add more value to our members and to grow faster as an association. I am confident that I can contribute a huge amount to the IFPSM Board due to my 25 years of experience in procurement and supply chain. I know what our members need and due to my 10 years of experience in ZNS, I know what problems associations are facing in their daily activities, in particular small associations. Over this time I have been the Alternate or Senior Delegate of IFPSM Council so I understand the challenges which are facing the Board of IFPSM over the next few years. I am passionate about developing the procurement and supply chain profession, regionally and internationally, and I have consistently contributed to IFPSM events since my involvement began. When I have some free time between all my obligations with the company and in the association, I like to visit the mountains (we have bountiful Alps in Slovenia), the coast, to work in my garden, to read a good book, to play tennis or badminton, to dance or simply enjoy the company of my two children, my husband or/and my friends. www.zns-zdruzenje.si

The Graduate Certificate in Public Procurement and Contract Management program at Old Dominion University (ODU) in Norfolk, Virginia, has become the second college or university program in the world to achieve the Global Standard for Professional Competence in Purchasing and Supply. The Global Standard is a demanding benchmark—developed and administered by the International Federation of Purchasing and Supply Management (IFPSM)—for assessing educational programs in purchasing and supply management. ODU’s achievement of the Global Standard was announced by Global Standard Board member Michael Bevis at ODU’s First Annual Public Procurement and Contract Management Symposium on April 25, 2014. Dr. Stephen B. Gordon, director of ODU’s Graduate Certificate in Public Procurement and Contract Management program, welcomed the announcement on behalf of the university. ODU President John R. Broderick, who was present for the announcement, noted that achievement of the award evidences that in three short years Old Dominion University has become a center of expertise and excellence in public sector procurement and contract management. Launched in July 2011, the program boasts sixty-five current enrollees, and new enrollees are being added virtually every day. More than twenty individuals have earned the Graduate Certificate in Public Procurement and Contract Management during the brief existence of the program. ODU’s commitment to leadership and excellence in education and service motivated the university to apply for accreditation to the Global Standard. Dr. Gordon was very complimentary of the two phase assessment process, observing that “while rigorous and demanding, it did not impose any unnecessary demands on university staff”. The program director added that he was impressed by the relevancy of the criteria used to make the determination and the professionalism of the on-site assessor. ODU contemplates that being accredited to the Global Standard will establish global credibility for the university’s Graduate Certificate in Public Procurement and Contract Management program and thereby greatly expand its reach and positive impact. Gordon noted that he hopes other, similar programs elsewhere will seek accreditation to the Global Standard. To earn the Graduate Certificate in Public Procurement and Contract Management (GCPPCM), individuals who meet program entry requirements must complete a fifteen-credit course of graduate-level study that comprises satisfactory completion of

four required public procurement and contract management courses and one approved elective course. The GCPPCM may be earned in conjunction with pursuit of a Master of Public Administration (MPA) degree or Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree. Individuals also may pursue the Graduate Certificate as non-degree-seeking students. All courses in the Graduate Certificate in Public Procurement and Contract Management program can be taken through online distance learning, which means that literally any qualified individual anywhere can earn the GCPPCM without setting foot on the Old Dominion University campus. Details of the program may be obtained at http://dl.odu.edu/programs/public-procurement-contract-management.

Dr. Gordon observed that the mission of ODU’s program is to create a strategically-minded procurement workforce with the knowledge, skills, and orientation necessary to support the enterprise goals of public sector organizations. “The Graduate Certificate in Public Procurement and Contract Management program at ODU far exceeds in scope and philosophy the compliance-focused training traditionally provided for procurement and contract management specialists in governmental and quasi-governmental organizations,” Gordon stated. He added that many recipients of the Graduate Certificate intentionally have chosen to enter careers in public procurement and contract management once they have seen the opportunities in the field to make meaningful contributions to society. The required courses in the Graduate Certificate in Public Procurement and Contract Management program are taught only by experienced practitioners who also possess the required academic credentials.

The ambassadors are committed to proactively raise the profile of the Global Standard within their network and areas of influence. They identify potential applicants to the Standard and facilitate the application process by explaining its independent rigour and benefits.

ALLAN DEACON

The IFPSM Global Standard is an excellent initiative and I am proud to be associated with it. As a

professional practitioner for 40 years I am committed to the ongoing development of our profession.

My career has spanned MNC’s, SME’s and some public sector. I have worked in several countries and

during this time I have maintained close links with my professional bodies. I am currently pursuing a

PhD in Knowledge and Innovation at Bangkok University. This is a new program and I am one of the first

cohorts hoping to complete the requirements for a doctor degree in the 1st quarter 2015. My research

interest is competitive advantage from knowledge based innovation within supply chains. I presented a

paper in February at the ICIE 2014 conference. This month I am moderating several sessions at an AIDF/UN conference. I also

stay connected to several organizations that use me to advise on procurement related subjects.

I have a unique network that encompasses practitioners, academics, and theorists. I am particularly interested in exploring how

education, through business schools and professional bodies, can help organizations and individuals acquire and develop the

skills and standards necessary to stimulate creativity and innovation in the global knowledge environment. Many governments

are now recognizing this and introducing initiatives to bring all the key stakeholders together. I believe professional associations

have an important role to play in this and that international umbrella organizations, such as IFPSM have a key role in

harmonizing standards to “increase the bar” and develop the profession.

______________________________________________________________________________________________________

SUSAN KEIGHLEY

My experience of the IFPSM is that of an organisation which is a vehicle to support the procurement

profession globally and ethically, which IPFSM can do as an autonomous entity. This requires an

understanding and acceptance of the local challenges facing the profession whilst promoting global

standards and networking for the benefit of all.

As Director of a business school in a prominent South African university tasked with financial capacity

building for provincial government, I recognized that procurement and managing the supply chain were

critical skills. These skills were added to the programme and the local qualifications accredited and aligned to global standards.

Advocating the importance of professional procurement to support economic development in-country and best practice was

essential. I was able to do this by expanding the CIPS footprint through my next role as CIPS Regional Manager Africa

responsible for the Sub-Saharan Africa. I undertook the same activities in the Middle East and Far East.

With a passion for the promotion of leadership and ethics to support the procurement profession, I have spoken at many

conferences including the ACCA, MIPS and SAPICS. I am a member of MIPS; was a Council member of ZIPS and served on the

Executive Committee of IPSA. I was also a committee member of the South African Business Women’s Association responsible

for education and scholarships.

I have recently completed a Master’s degree in Management Learning and Leadership through Lancaster University. I value the

opportunity to support the profession through my existing networks and contacts. I will be relocating to Saudi Arabia in June to

take up a new role as Principal of a Women’s College in Saudi Arabia

Webinar: Reinventing Professional Associations for the 21st Century. IFPSM/Sterling - 16 July 2014 IFPSM and Sterling have formed a partnership to deliver a free webinar for Federation members (and their members) to access a unique insight into a topic which is of great relevance to all professionals working within procurement. There are a plethora of supplier certifications that purport to establish their credentials. However, how do Procurement and Supply Chain professionals avoid a desperate spin of the wheel when seeking to validate the relevance and value of a supplier’s credentials? The webinar will offer support and insight into this vital area of supplier evaluation and include a Q+A session Further details with joining instructions will be circulated in the near future. Please follow this link: http://ifpsm.org/index.php/knowledge/supplier-certification-do-you-feel-lucky/ to access an article that expands on the topic which has been generated by The British Assessment Bureau.

The British Assessment Bureau’s (BAB’s) reputation was established in 1969 as a specialist in certification scheme management. In 1997, the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry approved the use of the word ‘British’ in its new corporate title in recognition of its pre-eminent status. Today, thousands of organisations depend on BAB.
