APEX AWARDS 2015
APEX AWARDS 2015: OF SCALE
& GRANDEUR!It was a widely anticipated event by the Apparel Industry. Finally, the day dawned. CMAI’s Apex Awards 2015 kicked off in grand style on October 28, 2015, at Tata Theatre, NCPA, Mumbai. Pankaja Balaji reports on this Eventful and Glamorous night. Photographs: Dhiman Chatterjee.
Continuing to recognise and appreciate the achievements of its members and those in the industry, the CMAI hosted its Apex Awards 2015 on a balmy evening at the magnificent Tata Theatre, NCPA, Mumbai. The guests entered the auditorium through the grand flight of stairs that added stately glamour to the event. There was a Paparazzi Corner where those interested could
take pictures and give interviews. While waiting for the event to begin, the guests mingled amongst themselves, catching up with peers from the industry and amongst the Association.
The host of the evening Siddharth Kannan, darling of the camera and B-town, bought energy and glitz with his quick humour and extravagance. As various dignitaries came

to present the Awards, Siddharth Kannan’s enthusiastic exclamations of friendship and devotion made these industry bigwigs grin helplessly.
The event began with an opening speech from Mr Rahul Mehta, President, CMAI, on the highlights of the year. He spoke about the new Payment Default Committee which had since its conception retrieved a whopping R400 crore in disputed funds. He also spoke about the success of this year’s National Garment Fair, which saw a footfall of more than 38,000 retailers. He closed his introductory note by assuring the audience of the objectivity and unbiased decision making process that led to deciding the winners in the various categories.
Mr B S Nagesh, Founder, TRRAIN, was the Key Note speaker. In his address to the audience, he spoke about the need for having such Awards and the benefits of these Awards. He pointed the benefits of such Awards, “Two things happen; first, we showcase the best of the industry, and second, we motivate people to become better than the best.” He addressed fears on the lack of growth in textiles. He pointed out, “There is no gloom or doom. I am positive every brand is seeing a growth, you first have to look. We need to start looking inwards; there is opportunity here to scale up, build capabilities and capacities. Consumer patterns are changing and we must follow the way they are shopping.” His optimistic and positive attitude set the tone for the night.

Nielsen India Pvt Ltd, the CMAI Apex Awards 2015 research partner, gave a presentation on the method used to determine the winners across categories. A survey created by CMAI was distributed across 17 cities and in 270 plus retail outlets. Consumers ranked the brands, and point weightages were assigned and collated at the end to determine winners. There was a lovely musical and comic break by the talented Ms Sugandha Mishra. Her talents in mimicry, jokes on customer care, along with a wide range of vocals had the audience applauding throughout her performance.
The Awards were categorised as Jury Awards, Performance Awards, Excellence Awards and Popular Awards. There were 26 Awards given away in these categories. The apparel industry has grown tremendously because of the efforts of the many garment manufacturers who ensure that they do their best for the industry. The winners were distinguished people representing the best in the industry, and were rightly recognised for it. The appreciation of their hard work left a glow on their faces and the ringing of loud applause in their ears. The President’s Award was given

to an Association member, Mr Ashok Shah, Chairman, Fair Sub-Committee, CMAI, for his contribution in taking the National Garment Fair to a new level. Mr Shah’s gracious acceptance speech clearly showed that the achievement was a team effort and that there was no one single winner. The National Garment Fair this year saw a jaw-dropping 200 per cent increase in manufacturer participation with a footfall of 38,000 retailers.
Ms Sugandha Sharma’s return to the stage was followed by an audience interaction
that had a few lucky ones from the audience displaying their spectacular singing talent. Mr Kannan’s energy abounded through the evening and maintained a buzz of excitement.
The Award function ended with an open air dinner at the NCPA lawns. The dinner saw people congratulating the winners and networking on possible future collaborations. A sense of achievement pervaded among the crowd as well-wishers interacted with the winners. It was a wonderful evening that was very well organised and presented.
