Tal como su nombre lo indica, esta fachada consiste en una serie de superficies que han sufrido una serie de transformaciones según distintos desplazamientos en su su forma original. Estos desplazamientos se proponen para conseguir cierta torsión en las distintas partes de la unidad y así, que está pueda responder más certeramente a ciertas condiciones propuestas. La unión de estas superficies es a través de superficies curvas que buscan generar continuidad entre ellas de modo de generar un solo elemento continuo (la unidad) que después conformará una malla de estos elementos. Esta curvatura propuesta se encarga de responder a la curvatura natural de la trayectoria solar, pero, a razón de los desplazamientos que posee, no pretende cubrir del sol en todo momento, sino que cubrir principalmente durante el medio día y la tarde, sin restringir tanto la absorsión de luz durante la mañana. El efecto debe verse acentuado durante el verano, y disminuido en el invierno, de modo que la protección libere del calor e iluminación excesiva de las épocas de calor, pero permita mayor calefacción durante las épocas de mayor frío.

El modo de conseguir lo anteriormente planteado, es fijarse en la trayectoria solar de los solsticios de verano e invierno, de modo que se pueda buscar cubrir la curvatura de una y no de la otra, pero además con los desplazamientos planteados, buscar recibir mayor iluminación durante la mañana y menor durante la tarde.

Por lo tanto, si se requiere cubrir esta curvatura con estos ángulos, un marco con tres caras en la siguiente posición serían suficientes mientras tuviesen las dimensiones necesarias de longitud, pero la curvatura solar no es seguida de esta forma y existe la posibilidad de dibujar por encima de la figura una curvatura más acertada.

Entonces, a partir de esta forma inicial cuadrangular, se va construyendo la curvatura necesaria, se hace una primera aproximación, agregando una curva e inclinando las caras laterales, sin embargo la curvatura no es continua:

Por lo que se inclinan los planos primero, y después se produce la curvatura necesaria a través de una sucesión de círculos los cuáles van creciendo progresivamente y posicionándose uno al lado del otro según el requerimiento de la curva y produciendo así, un elemento continuo.

Una vez que se consigue la curvatura deseada, se procede a duplicarla y desplazarla según el ángulo necesario a cubrir en el solsticio de verano

Después se unen estos marcos generando una superficie continua que está a partir de su desplazamiento está orientada a recibir mayor luz desde el Oriente y menor luz desde Poniente. Por último, esta pieza se duplica colocando el punto final sobre el arco de la siguiente. Sin embargo, para este último paso, se observa como sigue quedando un excedente de pieza, que además cubre la vista lateral al interior del recinto pero es indispensable, por lo que se dibuja una trayectoria para reducirlo.

En esta serie de vistas, se puede apreciar como teóricamente, la fachada logra visualmente obtener los resultados de mayor y menor protección según el posicionamiento dado por los ángulos:

Se comenzó la construcción de prototipos probando distintos espesores en una impresora 3D de PLA. Los primeros resultados no fueron adecuados por el mínimo espesor, pero al aumentarlo este problema se solucionó arrojando mejor resultados en el prototipo.

Se imprimieron 24 unidades, representativas de 1/3 de la fachada original. La producción de la totalidad no fue posible por el extenso tiempo de impresión que requería, el cuál era mayor al tiempo disponible para realizar la construcción de prototipos.

Por esta razón, se realizó un marco que cubriera el resto de la fachada faltante y se ajustaron las piezas a este para comenzar a realizar los experimentos.

Estos experimentos consistieron en medir la cantidad de Lux que ingresaba en distintos horarios del día y épocas del año, invierno y verano. Además de otro experimento orientado principalmente a observar como se producía el ingreso de luz y la iluminación que se obtenía.

Por la escases de fachada, la primera variable a despejar fue si producía cambios notables el posicionamiento de la fachada para la habitación que se estaba midiendo, pero los resultados arrojaron la misma cantidad de Lux, por lo que no afectaba para esta cantidad de fachada la posición. Por este motivo los experimentos se realizaron en la fachada posicionada superiormente, tomando esta elección en la caída de luz que se produciría, sería mayor.

Los resultados fueron los siguientes:

Los parámetros indican que menor a 0.3 no posee un rango de luz aceptable. Sin embargo existe una enorme incidencia en realización del experimento donde 2/3 de la fachada estuvieron completamente cubiertos con un muro, por lo que el resultado no pareciera ser concluyente bajo la experimentación realizada.

En las fotografías se puede constatar este fenómeno:

Se observa como ingresa la luz la luz, sin embargo se puede observar el gran porcentaje oscuro que existe por el muro del marco puesto a la fachada.

Viendo hacia la fachada desde el muro anterior.

En estas fotografías se puede constatar el contraste que existe entre el sector de fachada iluminado con el sector de muro oscurecido. Para ambas estaciones del año al medio día existe iluminación de la fachada. Además, si se observa el techo de la caja, se puede ver como se produce la reflexión de luz hacia el interior, indicando que sí entra un porcentaje de luz indirecta.

Conclusiones y aprendizajes

El principal aprendizaje estuvo en las charlas y conocimientos adquiridos y profundizados. El proceso creativo que se produjo a partir de compartir estos conocimientos, nutrió todas las fases del proyecto, desde su concepción para la realización de una idea a partir del pensamiento paramétrico, así como aprender a construirla a partir de cálculos, dibujos, y modelado 3D. La realización de prototipos de este tipo también representó una nueva experiencia, y que a pesar de no haber obtenido los resultados esperados en la experimentación, resultó útil para conocer las falencias y consideraciones que se deben tener para realizar este tipo de experimentos. Pero la mayor ganancia de todas fue la posibilidad de experimentar con estas formas de un modo que permite la experimentación continua y el replanteamiento de un proyecto.

I am working with origami and the meaning of origami is: - Ori = folded - Kami = paper Origami is from Japanese origen.

My facade is used for sun-shading and I am using origami to keep most of the sun out of my building. Thats why I came up with the name ORISOL.

FACADES IN ORIGAMI

EXPLICATION OF ORIGAMIC ARCHITECTURE

Origami is the art of paper folding that originated in Japan and is commonly practiced worldwide. It has received attention in science and engineering, getting credit for many innovative designs and applications. Over the years, many artists and scientists have been intrigued by origami and have attempted to investigate and reveal its underlying principles. The goal of this art is to create a representation of an object using geometric folds and crease patterns on a single piece of paper, preferably without gluing or cutting the paper. The Japanese art of paper folding requires a very sophisticated understanding and subtle application of the geometric transformation of a flat surface into a three-dimensional structure. The geometric and topological properties of origami folding have challenged several mathematicians, who have formulated folding principles and theorems. Engineers have also been drawn to learn about this ancient art, in order to incorporate it into their designs. The origami technique has been utilized in many folding applications These applications have led to the transition of origami from a form of art to a mathematical and engineering topic. Origami has proved to be useful in areas such as structural and architectural design.

WHY I CHOOSE ORIGAMI FOR MY FACADESThe goal is to find a facade that brings light into the building, so you don’t need a lot of artificial light and a facade who don’t bring too much heat into the building, so you don’t need airconditioning in summer. These are the main facts for a sustainable facade.

In my study I try to find the best pattern for my facade. I started with an origami of triangles, because I think it is an interesting form to use. The upper triangles can be used for blocking the sun and the lower triangles can be used to bring the light of the sun into the building, but not the heat of the sun. I will do some experiments with reflective material on the lower triangles to see how it works.

In this workshop we are going to do some tests with the facade, to see how sustainable it is.

Because the triangles are equal you have the same amount of sun in the morning and in the evening. In the morning it is really nice to have the sun in your building, but the evening sun is a really strong sun, so you want to avoid this sun into your building.

Conclusion: I have to find an asymmetrical design, so you have morning sun, but less evening sun.

OPTIONS OF FACADESOption 2 Different size of triangle on both sides

- The openings are on 1 line, so it doesn’t effect much the morning and the evening sun, only the sun at 12pm.

- Because all the triangles are different it is very hard to open the openings.

Conclusion: It was good to test this option, because now I know it is not an option to use this system in my facade. 4 different triangles are to hard to handle and the sun-shading-system is less working if you have all the openings on one line.

Because the triangles are asymmetrical, you have a lot of morning sun in your building and in the evening you have less sun.

Conclusion: Asymmetrical triangles are better than symmetrical. You have more options to create the perfect amount of sun in your building. Now I need to experiment the right proportion. Which is the best ratio for the sun in Santiago, Chile.
