The Knauf Installation Kit consistsof two assembly aids with nodulesto fit the relevant perforation anda Uniflott applicator comprisingtubing with plastic nozzle andpistons which can be used onboth sides.

Installation Kits are only requiredfor the following Apertura designs:Circular 6/18, 8/18, 10/23,12/25, 15/30, 8/12/50, and12/20/66.

Uniflott applicators are alsoavailable separately.

Note

Always control the overall image with a building line through thestraights and diagonals of the rows of perforations. Lay perforatedboards on cross joints.

Cutting AperturaWhen cutting Apertura take carenot to damage the fibre fleece.Apertura can be scored with aknife and snapped, or cut with a saw.

Treating the EdgesEdges should be lightlychamfered on the edge using a standard hand sander with 90 grade sandpaper.

Perforated Board MarkingsKnauf Apertura Plasterboardswith straight and staggeredperforations are marked in redand blue on the cut edges. Whenfixing the boards ensure that theedge marked red on one boardis placed next to the edgemarked blue on the adjacentboard. This is the same for boththe long and short edges.

Set the spacing between the perforationsControl the perforation format by sighting out the straight anddiagonal lines of the rows ofperforations. Set the perforationspacing using the assembly aidwhere required. A 3mm gap isleft between boards for jointingpurposes.

Fixing the perforated boardsPrior to fixing consider the friezeeffect required around theperimeter of the ceiling or wall(see page 19). Knauf Drywallrecommend that a three manteam is used for installation work.

Ceilings: Set out the AperturaCeiling System as described onpages 20-22 ensuring the correctchannel spacings are used to suitthe board perforation and size.

When fixing the boards, start inthe middle of the room and workoutwards. 25mm Knauf DrywallScrews should be used at

maximum 200mm centres, placed carefully between theperforations as necessary.Apertura boards are fixedperpendicular to the lower ceiling channels.

Align the first board in the middle of the ceiling and fix asdescribed above. Offer up thenext board ensuring that theboards are correctly lined up and fix, starting with the edgeadjacent to the first board.Continue fixing boards in thismanner, starting with the longedges and then with the shortedges, until the ceiling iscompleted.

Walls: Set out the Wall Linersystem as described on pages23-25 ensuring that the correctchannel spacings are used to suitthe board perforations and size.

When fixing the boards, start atone end of the lining and workalong. 25mm Knauf DrywallScrews should be used atmaximum 300mm centres, placed carefully betweenperforations as necessary.Apertura boards are fixedparallel to the vertical Apertura‘C’ Channels. Align the firstboard as described above andfix. Offer up the next boardensuring that the boards arecorrectly lined up andfix, starting with the edgeadjacent to the first board.Continue in this manner until the wall is completed.

Installation Procedure - Boards

Frieze optionsa) Flush-jointing to plasterboard -Prior to fixing the Aperturaboards, fix a minimum 100mmwide strip of 12.5mm SquareEdge Knauf Wallboard to theperimeter framework. Chamfer theedge of the Wallboard where itmeets the Apertura board andleave a 3mm gap ready forjointing with Uniflott.

b) Flush-jointing to Apertura - Fix the Apertura board as describedabove, continuing to the perimeter.Mark out the desired position ofthe frieze with a chalk line, andfix low stick masking tape to theinside. Any holes remainingwithin the frieze area can then be filled with Uniflott to create a smooth surface.

c) Raised feature usingplasterboard - Fix the Aperturaboard as described above, continuing to the perimeter. Tocreate the raised frieze, fix a stripof 12.5mm Square Edge KnaufWallboard, at least 100mm wide,on top of the Apertura, through tothe perimeter framework.

Cleaning the jointsAfter completion of the assembly, clean the joints with a dampbrush until no dust remains.

JointingWhen using the applicator, cutthe nozzle to suit the joint widthand squeeze together slightly atthe end to allow the nozzle topenetrate to the full depth of thejoint. Once filled with KnaufUniflott the applicator can beused in a standard sealant gun tocompletely fill the joints. Uniflott isa chemical drying compoundand will set in approximately 90 minutes so ensure that theapplicator is rinsed out with water after use.

When the Uniflott has stiffened in the joints remove any excesswith a jointing knife, beingcareful not to damage the paper.Once the Uniflott has fully setapply a second coat with astandard jointing knife in order toensure a flush joint is achieved. This stage is critical to achievinga perfect seamless finish so careshould be taken to ensure thejoints are completely filled, applyinga further coat if necessary.

If any of the perforations havebecome filled during jointing, clean them out carefully beforethe Uniflott has set.

Tip: Use a quality low stick maskingtape to cover the perforationseither side of the joint, prior tothe application of Uniflott.

Once the joints are completelyfilled and set, sand to a flat andeven finish.

DecorationApply an undiluted coat of KnaufWallboard Primer to the entiresurface to equalise the suction levelsbetween the joints and boards. The surface can then be decoratedusing a foam rubber roller.

Audible Success at Audi Showrooms

“ “

Apertura enabled us to achieve an impressive ceilingconsistent with the specification and it was easy to use. As the plasterboard is perforated we had to be mindful ofthe light fittings in the ceiling and ensure the perforationslined up properly. However, the Apertura plasterboardwas straightforward to cut and enabled us to accomplisha neat finish around the lights.
