Lesson Plan Adapted from:

Fernald, G. (1943). Remedial techniques in basic school subjects. New York: McGraw-Hill.

Situation:

Student Betsey(name is changed to protect the student) suffered from a severe blow to the

head during a soccer game. Betsey was in a coma for 2 weeks and upon returning to school

she was placed on Home and hospital. After testing her, the scores in both reading and

memory had dropped 1 standard deviation.

After several different strategies, this strategy worked the best.

Materials:

Screen or I used a wire document holder.

Crayons or Magic Markers

8x11 sheets of paper cut in half.

Procedure:

Using a list of frequency words at the students independent level(if unknown use the

San Diego Quick)

Tape the paper to the wire document holder

Model the tracing of the letters with your finder first

Model the writing of the letters with the magic marker

Make sure you watch the student to ensure that the student is following each of your

steps exactly.

If the student makes a mistake, stop the student and have him/her start over

Intervention

Student will reinforce the learning by doing the following:

1. Say each letter while tracing the word

2. Say the word and respell the word out loud

3. Student will write the word in the air with their eyes closed.

If the student has not spelled the word correctly, repeat the intervention until student is

successful.
