LABOR of LOVEHome Builders Association of Greater Knoxville

The Love Kitchen, a Knoxvillecharity that provides home-cooked meals for people whomight not otherwise eat, has

received plenty of national publicitythis year.

The founders, Helen Ashe and EllenTurner, appeared on Oprah last month, and the charity was highlighted onSecret Millionaire recently. Large dona-tions to The Love Kitchen mean thecharity can update the facility andequipment as necessary. Unfortunately, the founders aren’t able to say the samefor their own homes, which are in needof serious repairs.

In fact, “Helen hasn’t lived in herhome for awhile because the heat andair weren’t working. She’s been livingwith Ellen,” Doyle Webb, president ofHome Builders Association of GreaterKnoxville, said. “They give all their

time and money to The Love Kitchen.”Staff from WBIR approached

HBAGK about doing something to helpHelen and Ellen have the homes theydeserve. The joint effort is being calledLabor of Love, and the plans aren’t justfor cosmetic updates.

HBAGK plans include: new roof, windows, heating and air conditioning, siding, cabinets, remodeling kitchensand baths, new paint, moving laundryrooms, sealing basements and muchmore.

“These ladies give their heart andsoul to our community. It would bereally nice to help them out becausethey’ve been helping out our communi-ty for 25 years,” Webb said.

THREE GENERATIONSStanley’s Greenhouses, Garden Center & Plant Farm

Stanley’s Greenhouses, Garden Center & Plant Farm iswell-known throughout Knoxville, but few people knowthe origin behind the name, or more specifically, whyit’s called a plant farm.

In the early 1800s, land was given to the family by the half-brother of Tennessee Governor William Blount. That land wasused to farm wheat and vegetables.

Years later, as Charles Stanley, owner of Stanley’sGreenhouses, Garden Center & Plant Farm, was growing up,the family sold their goods on Market Square to support them-selves financially. Later, Charles realized the business needed toexpand in order to remain profitable, so he tried adding flowers.Although the business has grown significantly with the additionof several greenhouses, Stanley’s honors the family’s farmingroots in the business name.

Family is important to Stanley’s and it remains a family busi-ness today. Charles continues to be a presence in the business. His sons, Monte and Rocky, have been overseeing for 20 yearsor so, updating the technology of the greenhouse and adding tothe varieties of plants that make Stanley’s unique. Monte’s twosons, Brett and Bill, work at the family business. Zach, Rocky’sson, can also be found at Stanley’s.

With three generations so passionate about horticulture in oneplace, customers would have a hard time finding a better place

SMART LIVING IN INVERNESS

Planning and building an upscale residential com-munity requires experience and vision. SchaadCompanies, celebrating its 100th year as a familyowned group of businesses, has decades of

development experienceand vision. They realizedearly that today’s home-owners needed to incorpo-rate the latest in energyefficient building materials, methods andprocesses. This resulted InSchaad building a community in East Tennessee that fea-tures ENERGY STAR certified homes.

outside it’s hard to tell, but they are more efficientthan a typical new homeand twice as efficient as a typical existing home.Inverness is ideally locat-ed only one-half mile toAnchor Park and less thanthree miles to Turkey Creek and approximately 15 milesto Oak Ridge. It offers luxury living with 13 acres ofopen space, a private community clubhouse with pool, sidewalks, streetlights and walking trails that connect toFarragut’s Greenway. Several marinas on Ft. LoudounLake are close by. Living in an efficient ENERGY STARcertified home in Inverness is smart living.

Incorporate the latest in energy efficient building materials, methods and processes

SEVEN ENERGY EFFICIENCY IMPROVEMENTS

1. Closed/Conditioned Crawlspace a. Performs better than vented crawlspaces in terms of safety,

health, comfort, durability and energy consumption. b. Places HVAC unit in the closed/conditioned crawlspace,

therefore, not exposed to the outside temperature that it is working against.

2. Energy Star Windowsa. Lowers energy bills and saves you money over single-paned and

even new double-paned, clear glass windows. b. Protects from the winter cold and summer sun, while also

reducing condensation and interior fading. c. Keeps your home cooler in the summer and warmer in the

winter.

3. Air Sealinga. Improves comfort, especially during periods of hot or

cold weather. b. Lowers energy use, which means lower energy bills. c. Produces a quieter home due to less noise entering from

the outside.d. Results in fewer holes where pollen, dust, pollution, and

insects can enter. e. Improves durability of building structure through the

reduced movement of moist air.

4. Sealing Ductworka. Prevents conditioned air from leaking and increases the system’s

efficiency by as much as 20%, thus keeping the home at a comfortable temperature.

5. Energy Star Light Fixturesa. Uses 1/4 the energy of traditional lighting.

b. Saves money on energy bills and bulb replacements, with bulbs that must last at least 10,000 hours (about seven years of regular use).

c. Distributes light more efficiently and evenly than standard fixtures.

6. Energy Star Appliancesa. Incorporates advanced technologies that use 10-50% less energy

and water than standard models.

7. Thermal Air Barrier Alignmenta. Restricts or slows the flow of heat using insulation materials.

Across the entire building envelope, all holes and cracks fully sealed and in full contact with the insulation.

“MARKLI”HOMEMeans uncompromised quality

Anyone can build an expensive home. Few can build atruly fine home, and perhaps the greater part can buildit only if money is no object. But Bob Markli is

among that rare breed of “old school”, professional,artisan/craftsmen whose lifetime of dedicated experience quali-fy him to build fine homes at reasonable cost. Those fortunateenough to employ him will have no “broker” or “drive-bybuilder”, Bob Markli will be on the site mothering and shep-herding each of his projects to a successful completion.

To understand, it is necessary to know a little about Bob.Born and raised in East Tennessee of articulate, educated par-ents who came here from Maryland during WWII. His father, ascientist on the Manhattan Project, was a “renaissance man”who was also an accomplished engineer, machinist, pipefitter, mason, electrician, welder, carpenter, boat-builder and artistwho suffused his son with a vast knowledge of mechanics, physics and aesthetics. His mother, a registered nurse from

famed Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore was a delicate andsensitive woman who infused in her children an appreciation ofart, literature and the humanities. Growing up here in a timewhen steam locomotives still plied the tracks and telegraphsrelayed messages, when kerosene lamps, coal stoves and plow-ing with mule teams were commonplace, Bob grew to love thehistory and sense of place that is the South.

Choosing his career was not difficult for Bob whose profes-sional career stretches back to the 1960’s where he first prac-ticed the craft as a carpenter in the burgeoning Baltimore/Washington corridor. Ever the student, he continued to develophis talents while studying his chosen field, progressing rapidlyfrom journeyman to subcontractor to general contractor. He has built everything from apartment and town homecomplexes to entire single-family communities and WalMart

Expo Center Friday, March 4 through Sunday, March 6. “We had almost one hundred people sign up to help

from the Home ShowTM alone,” Webb said.In order to complete everything needed for the homes,

including making both handicap accessible, Webb esti-mates they need to raise $50,000. To-date, he said theyhave raised approximately $20,000, well short of theirgoal. The Labor of Love project needs additional supportfrom the community if they are going to manage to startwork in April.

Webb said 100 percent of the money donated for Laborof Love will go to Ellen and Helen, even if more moneyis raised than initially needed.

“If there’s anything leftover, we’re going to put it in anaccount for maintenance for the homes. So if somethinggoes bad or they need to change something, they’ll havemoney to do it,” he added.

He wants to thank everyone who has offered to volun-teer their time, materials and money.

“Even though times have been hard, so many peoplehave stepped up and given to this project. It’s been greatto see.”

Judy Teasley

JUDY TEASLEYExceeds excellence!

Judy Teasley has been named the No. 1 agent for Keller WilliamsKnoxville-West for 2009 and 2010, and the No. 1 Keller Williams Agentin Tennessee for 2010. She also was named in the top 25 agents of over 79,000 agents in Keller Williams for January 2011. Teasley also was in

This fol-lows all of the top sales agent awards that she has earned every year since1999.

Teasley joined Keller Williams Realty Knoxville-West in July 2008 and istheir No. 1 agent. Keller Williams now has over 80,000 agents and is growingstrongly.

“I got into real estate about 22 years ago,” Teasley said. “I enjoyed dealingwith homes and people and helping people find the right place for them.”

What is the secret of Teasley’s success and winning awards consistently?“I’ve been in the business a long time and have a lot of referrals,” she said.“It’s also the builders I deal with. I help with development — developingfloor plans, developing subdivisions — and that’s really what it is. It’s thecontacts I’ve made over the years and the help of the people in the office.”

Teasley works with only one part-time assistant, her husband, NormanTeasley Jr.
