Green IT? Energy efficiency? We want to do more with less!

Sometimes we are victims of a growing greenwash

phenomenon. Organisations

use Green IT and PUE concepts as marketing tools.

The reality is that we want to do more with less. We want to use less energy, less resources and ultimately we want to spend less and still achieve the same results.

Power Usage EffectivenessThe PUE is defined as follows:

The PUE can range from 1.0 to infinity. Ideally, a PUE

value approaching 1.0 would indicate 100%

efficiency (i.e. all power used by IT equipment only). Currently, there are no comprehensive data sets which show the true spread of the PUE for datacenters. Some preliminary work indicates that many datacenters may have a PUE of 3.0 or greater, but with proper design a PUE value of 1.6 should be achievable. This theory is supported by measurements completed by Lawrence Berkley National Labs which shows that the 22 datacenters measured had PUE values in the 1.3 to 3.0 range. Other research indicates that PUE values of 2.0 are achievable with proper design. However, there is currently no comprehensive industry data set that shows accurate PUE statistics for datacenters.

Energy challenges●

Cloud computing is leading towards larger corporate data centres

and higher densities.

Larger data centres

(as opposed to distributed ones) can be better managed and can have higher efficiencies.

It is estimated that the IT industry has the same carbon footprint as the global aviation industry.

It is estimated that a medium-sized server has roughly the same annual carbon footprint as an SUV vehicle doing 6.37km per litre.

It also revealed that the energy consumption of servers and data centres

in the USA has doubled in the past five years

and is expected to almost double again in the next five years to an annual cost of around $7.4 billion.

Data centers account for what percent of all electricity being used? About 1-1.5%. That is a huge number when you think about it and is very similar to the power consumed by the worlds television sets. Electric costs are now showing up as a major line item expense that companies must account for to really understand the profitability of their businesses. Many companies and business units want to minimize this expense because it is limiting the funds available to deploy new applications that can increase the success of the businesses or defend from competitive threats. Leading to changing the way many companies think. Microsoft and Google are building some data centers in the areas with the lowest cost electricity. The newest mega data centers are actually being built in Iceland. Why Iceland – Geothermal energy, which is extremely low cost. Microsoft and Google are now building mega data centers in Iowa. Iowa is emerging as a center of cloud computing A handful of factors that make Iowa an attractive place for data centers: it's "safe and quiet," centrally located, and has an educated workforce, he says. There's also "relatively inexpensive" electricity, a surprisingly high percentage of which (8%) is wind generated. It turns out that, in addition to plentiful land and affordable electricity, the Hawkeye state gives hefty tax breaks. It's worth noting that Google's Iowa data center is located on a 55-acre site near Lake Manawa. In addition, Google has purchased 130 acres nearby and another 1,000 acres south of Council Bluffs. Google hasn't said how it plans to use those 1,000 acres. My guess is that it will build a wind farm there Google – has stated in a white paper that the possibility for power consumption spiraling out of control could not only effect the affordability of computers but the overall health of the planet

The InRow RC is a modular cooling solution designed to be installed in the row with IT equipment racks, and will deliver predictable cooling to IT equipment located in the row. The operation of the InRow RC maximizes performance by capturing the heat at the source enabling 20% more efficient operation than traditional data center cooling approaches. The Active Response Controls monitors inlet temperatures and will response to thermal loads in the row. The row based architecture allows for cooling to be added when the need arises instead of oversizing your data center. This row-based design greatly reduces your total cost of ownership with the use of variable speed fan technology.
