Anar spent 4 weeks in neonatal intensive care, but sadly, his twin brother did not survive. Because of his prematurity, Anar was at risk for asthma and RAD (Reactive Airway Disease). Anar’s parents were aware of his delicate health but afraid to seek treatment at the Emergency Room because of the cost. Unfortunately, this predicament is far too common. At Arlington Pediatric Center (APC), we believe that children are our community’s most precious resource. Our pediatric medical home provides underserved children with the quality healthcarethat they deserve—care that is comprehensive,family-centered, accessible, compassionate and culturally-sensitive. This issue of APC Access highlights our 2011 accomplishments as we celebrate 10 years of service to children and families in our community.

Well-child visits are an essential component ofpediatric care. These visits allow our pediatricians to assess each child’s physical and mental health,well-being, development, hearing, vision and oralhealth. APC recently expanded its role in newbornand infant care to meet an increased demand in the community for these services. With the closingof Arlington County’s well-child clinic in late 2011,APC has become the principal community providerof newborn and infant care for these vulnerablechildren.

Quality healthcare means satisfied patients, andAPC’s recent patient satisfaction survey reflects thiscommitment to the highest standards of service:l 100% of our families utilize APC as their

principal source of medical care.l 100% report that APC provided information and

resources to help with their child’s condition.l 93% say our nurses are friendly and answer

questions.l 93% say our doctors give good advice and

treatment.l 97% would recommend APC to friends and

family.

Every day at APC is different and challenging, and our staff is deeply aware that we are serving a population of patients with tremendous, and often unmet, needs. The knowledge that we are their safety-net strengthens our resolve. We are inspired by these families’ struggle to give their children a higher quality of life and find great purpose in ourrole of making the promise of a brighter, healthier future possible for their children.

With your generosity, APC is able to continue and expand our work for medically-underserved children in Arlington. I hope you take greatpride in knowing that a healthy start for a child in-need began with yoursupport of APC.

We extend a heartfelt thank you for your belief in our mission. u

Anar had his first pediatric visit at APC when he was 6 months old.He was already very sick, sufferingfrom asthma and other respiratory illnesses and on the verge of hospi-talization. Fortunately, with the careof APC pediatricians and nurses,Anar could be treated as an outpa-tient with the asthma medications, Albuterol and Pulmicort, which were supplied by our Pharmacy Assistance Program. The programalso providedSynagis, an expensive immunotherapymedication thathelps prevent acommon type ofrespiratory infec-tion that canlead to seriousrespiratory com-plications in pre-mature infants.

With the helpof APC, Anar ison his way to amuch healthierchildhood.

On behalf of Anar and the hundreds of APC patients who received medications through ourPharmacy Assistance Program, wewould like to thank our generousbenefactors: the Vicky Collins Chari-table Foundation, the Community Foundation of the National CapitalArea, the Singhal Family, and NovaScripts Central. Over 550 pre-scriptions were provided by this program, filling an enormous, unmetneed of our patients.

To learn more about how you can make prescription medicationavailable for a child in-need, pleasecontact Shelley Cooke, director of development, at 703.717.7561 [email protected]. u
