APAT.01

The accurate skill test for pool players!

LEVEL 1

Recommended by

Translated by Josh Curry (USA)

How do I start?

1. Play through the entire set of drills at least one time. Use the test page to keep track of your progress. Enter your results and calculate your overall score. The rules for each drill can be found on the following pages.

2. After you go through the entire test, during your next practice session, you should repeat the drills

that you scored less than 80% on. This is known as Re-testing. Practice the drill at least 3 or more times and write down your points, average, and score. Do this once a week for 3 weeks. Look at your scores again to figure out where your real weaknesses are.

3. If your results are consistently over 80% during the next 3 weeks for a specific drill you probably

don't need to focus on that one anymore. If you are still scoring less than 80% you should do one or more of the following.

a. Continue to practice the drill weekly until you achieve a score of 80% or greater over a 3 week period, or greater than 100% for 2 weeks in a row.

b. Practice parts of the drill separately, watch other better players perform the drill, search the Internet for help, or consult an instructor.

4. After 3 months, perform another complete test just like you did the first time. Can you score more

than 800 total points? If you can score more than 800 points you are ready to move on to APAT 2 where new and challenging drills are waiting for you.

The Ultimate Challenge:

Play the test under the observation of an official APAT Examiner (check our website for a list) and win an official WPA PAT emblem!

Can you take the pressure?

Subject: APAT 1.01 Speed Control

Rules:

Try to use the solid balls numbered 1-4 and their associated striped balls 9-11. The balls do not need to be set up ahead of time. Start with the 1-ball along the head-string and shoot it into the Speed 1 target zone. Leave the ball where it stops regardless of its position. Shoot the 9-ball next into the Speed 1.5 target zone. Continue shooting balls 2, 10, 3, 11, and 4 into their respective target zones. The goal of this exercise is to test your speed control, so the designated speed zones are valid for the entire table width. However, the ball you are shooting may not contact another object ball or one of the long rails. If it does, you do not get a point for that shot even if it lands within the target zone. Can you successfully shoot all 7 balls into their respective target zones? What is your average? Average x Factor = Score %.

Subject: APAT 1.02 Straightness

Rules:

Set up 3 pairs of object balls using a 2 ball gap width along the head string. The center of each pair should be in line with each diamond along the short rails. Place the cue ball in the middle of the gap just behind the head string. Shoot the cue ball through the gap, off the foot rail, and back through the gap without touching any of the object balls. It's OK for the cue ball to contact the head rail and pass through the gap again as long as it does not contact any of the object balls. Play the balls in order from one end of the table to the other. During the test you will shoot the exercise 3 times for a total of 9 balls. Can you shoot 9 in a row? Average x Factor = Score %.

Subject: APAT 1.03a Shot Efficiency and Control

Rules:

Place the object balls is they appear in the diagram, along the 3rd diamond with a 1 ball gap between each. Take the cue ball in hand behind the head string. You must sink the object ball and the cue ball must come to rest within the given target zone to get 1 point. Each target zone is 2 diamonds long and is good for the entire table width. Start with target zone F1 and proceed in order to F6. During the test you will perform this exercise only once. Divide your total points by 3 to get your average.

Subject: APAT 1.03b Shot Efficiency and Control

Rules:

Place the object balls is they appear in the diagram, along the 5th diamond with about a 1/2 ball gap between each. You do not have real zones, but minimum draw lines in accordance to the diamonds. On the 1st shot you must draw at least 1 diamond, 2nd shot 2 diamonds, etc…. During the test you will perform this exercise twice. Divide your total points by 3 to get your average.

Subject: APAT 1.04 Shot Making

Rules:

Place all 15 object balls according to the diagram. All ball positions are either on diamond or half diamond crossing lines. The 2-ball and cue ball position A are frozen to the rail. The 5 and 15 balls are 1 ball from the rail. A) Position the cue ball at position A at the beginning of each shot and shoot the object balls 1-5 in order. B) Position the cue ball at position B at the beginning of each shot and shoot the object balls 6-10 in order. C) Position the cue ball at the designated position C at the beginning of each shot and shoot the object balls 11-15 in order. The point does not count if the cue ball comes in contact with any other object ball. Shoot each set of five balls and divide by 3 to get your average. Average x Factor = Score %.

Rules:

Place object balls 1-5 according to diagram A, 1 diamond away from the pocket and at the full and half and diamond crossing lines. Start with ball-in-hand and shoot object ball 1. Continue shooting object balls 2-5 in order from where the cue ball rests each time. You can shoot the balls in reverse order if you want. The cue ball is not allowed to come in contact with another object ball or any rail. If it does, that point does not count and the inning is over.
