Course Description

The AP Spanish language course is equivalent to a third-year college-level course. This is a rigorous course taught exclusively in Spanish that requires students to improve their proficiency across the three modes of communication (interpersonal, interpretative, and presentational). The course focuses on the integration of authentic resources including online print, audio, and audiovisual resources, as well as traditional print resources that include literature, essays, and magazine and newspaper articles with the goal of providing a rich, diverse learning experience. Students communicate using rich, advanced vocabulary and linguistic structures as they build proficiency in all modes of communication.

The AP Spanish Language and Culture course emphasizes communication (understanding and being understood by others) by applying interpersonal, interpretive, and presentational skills in real-life situations. This includes vocabulary usage, language control, communication strategies, and cultural awareness. The AP Spanish Language and Culture course strives not to overemphasize grammatical accuracy at the expense of communication. To best facilitate the study of language and culture, the course is taught exclusively in Spanish.

Organization

The course is divided into thematic units which are further based on recommended contexts and guided by essential questions. Corresponding cultural elements are integrated into the study of the units, and activities are directed with those cultural connections in mind. Discussion of the topics completely in Spanish is a requirement for this course. It is assumed that students have previously been exposed to advance language structures in the courses leading up to the AP Spanish Language and Culture course; however, review of the mechanics is done within the contextual framework of each unit as needed. Through the study of the following AP topics, students build the necessary skills to reach the assessment objectives through the expansion of their receptive, productive, and interactive skills. AP themes to be covered include:

• La belleza y la estética • La vida contemporánea • Las familias y las comunidades • Los desafíos mundiales • Las identidades personales y públicas • La ciencia y la tecnología

Grading Policy (See annex A)

Students are assessed in a variety of manners which include homework, class participation, quizzes, tests, and presentations on a consistent basis. Semester exams are comprehensive assessments of each semester and include both written and oral components. Grades are calculated and posted frequently. Grades are made up of five components:

25% Speaking and class participation.

Homework /Classwork 15% Listening 15% Reading 25% Writing

20% Journal and Special projects

All the assignments are graded using the criteria of the AP scoring guidelines

Students should expect to complete assignments daily. These assignments will frequently include readings, audio recording, short writings and longer compositions as well as activities to augment vocabulary. Students are expected to practice their Spanish daily and will need discipline and academic maturity in meeting the requirements for assignments. All work should be complete and done with care, and it must have the following information included:

Evaluation and Grading*

Speaking and class participation (25%)

Students will receive a grade based on their involvement in the classroom and their attempt and effort to communicate in the target language, both during class as well as before and after class time. Spanish will be exclusively spoken by the teacher and by the students, except in very RARE cases. Students will be expected to use circumlocution to convey their message exclusively in the target language. Oral presentations and simulated conversations will be graded in this category as well.

Writing (15%)

Students will be continually expected to write in the target language, including but not limited to analysis, reflection, research, etc. Students should expect to write at least one formal essay per theme. On occasions, class will begin with a timed writing activity on varied themes.

*Grammar Workshop Students are expected to enter the course with all the grammar knowledge necessary to succeed in the AP Spanish Language course. Nonetheless, students will have frequent review and practice of the basic grammar structures that they have learned in past years in the form of in-class activities and homework.

Listening (15%)

As research and theory on second language acquisition indicate that students’ linguistic growth is related to the amount of time spent with the language in meaningful exposure to it, students will receive a grade based on their active listening in the classroom and their attempt and effort to use the target language, at all times (Krashen,1982). This category includes all interactive listening activities, including but not limited to dialogues, narratives, short films, television shows, group presentations, etc. See attached rubric for the detailed criteria for this grading section. This section will also include quizzes to check for listening comprehension.

Reading (15%):

Students will be expected to read various types of literary works both in class and at home. Students should

be able to summarize, synthesize, analyze and/or criticize all of the information for class discussions.

Reading quizzes may be given to check for comprehension.

Journal Entry and Projects 20%

Projects Projects will give students the opportunity to learn, promote in-depth understanding and cover a wide range of relevant subtopics related with Hispanic culture also will allow them to express their creativity. Some projects will require students to present in front of the class in a formal manner. Projects will be assigned throughout the year. Spanish Journal Students will build their study skills repertoire by maintaining a small composition notebook with vocabulary entries, class activities, comprehension questions and reflections from material read and notes from class. Students should be responsible for their own notes without having to be reminded. Good note taking and organization are important skills in any language!

The teacher will use the College Board Scoring Guide when grading students work
