ATTENDANCE/ TARDIES/ SIGNING OUT POLICIES:

As success in school is closely related to good attendance, it is essential that students come to class on time every day. Credit maybe withheld after five (5) accrued unexcused absences. 10 to 20 absences of any kind, will result in ineligibility to participate in any extracurricular activities.

If you don’t attend class, you will not pass! This is the most important factor for success. Failure and poor grades are directly related to attendance!

Page 4: AP Psychology Syllabi18-19 - Michael Krop...Aug 18, 2018  · each chapter or unit. Quizzes can emphasize multiple-choice questions, short answer questions, free- response essays,

4

All absences affect the participation (F) and conduct (F) grade of the student.

Students are required to bring in an absence note to the attendance office within 48 hours of the return to school or the absence may be unexcused. No makeup work can be issued or accepted until the absence is excused.

It is the student’s responsibility to request make up work when returning from an absence. Credit for missed work (unit tests) will be given only if the absence is excused.

*If you are going to be absent on the day an assignment is due, you must turn it in ahead of time, no excuses.

SIGN OUTS:

If you sign out early for personal reasons on the day

• A test/quiz is scheduled you may not make up the test or quiz. Please make an effort to contact me prior to leaving early.

• If an assignment is due, you must turn in the assignment before leaving in order to receive credit.

• If you sign out early, you are still considered absent from class and all terms applying to a regular absence still apply.

*Signing out of School - Signing out is NOT automatically excused! It is the teachers right to ask for the same documentation as an absence if a student is chronically absent (4+ times per year) due to signing out of school. Doctors’ appointments, as per county rules, should not be made during school hours. You will be sent to an administrator for excessive sign outs! No make-up will be accepted.

** If you are tardy, you will not be permitted to make up a quiz or test already in progress. Tardy pass must read EXCUSED in order to make up missed work.

• If you have 2 or more sign-outs within a 9-week grading period, you forfeit the opportunity to opt out or drop lowest grade

GRADING POLICY o You will be graded on a total point system, which will consist of scores from

tests, essays, quizzes, homework, journal assignments, alternative assessments, and class participation. You will also have a midterm and a final exam.

o All projects must be turned in with a coversheet and rubric to receive a grade. • Work must be completed on a daily basis to keep up with the workload.

There will be a series of graded items that will accumulate during each period. Those items are to be left in your binder.

• • It is the student’s responsibility to make arrangements to make up exams or

other work missed. All make up tests must be made up after school. The more class time you miss, the harder it will be for you to succeed.

• • LATE WORK WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED if you have an

unexcused absent. If you missed an assignment and you have an excuse absent you must turn in the alternative work the following class. It’s your responsibility to email me or ask your peers about miss assignment.

• All assignments must be headed with your name, date and class period on the right top hand corner (No name no grade)

ASSESSMENT PRACTICES

Traditional exam assessments will include cumulative tests, quizzes, collective midterm and final exams. Exams model the format of the AP Psychology Exam, with a combination of multiple-choice and free-response essays at the end of each chapter or unit. Quizzes can emphasize multiple-choice questions, short answer questions, free- response essays, or labeling diagrams/fill-in-the-blank questions. All students are encouraged to participate in several school or district AP Psychology Review sessions to further prepare for the AP Psychology Exam, later in April and May.

Each unit will require a different amount of work that will adequately cover the chapter. Assigned readings are scheduled each week with note card/flashcard completion for each chapter, covering chapter material and vocabulary. Other assignments given to students are Psych Simulation activities, experiments, class presentations, collaborative projects, individual projects, online activities and papers. These assignments vary with each unit being covered.

Quarterly Assessment Practices: Each unit will last between 3-8 class and consist of approximately: § 1- 4 Chapter Tests § 1-2 Quizzes § Binder Grade (Chapter notes, Vocabulary, Journal Assignments, etc.) § Class/Group Participation § 1-2 Projects § Midterm § Final

Tests and Quizzes

Tests will be in similar format to the AP exam-stem questions with 5 choices whenever possible. Tests may be comprehensive with some questions from previous units. Pop quizzes do occur; these are generally based on notes and readings presented in class. All essays are to be written in APA style based on methods discussed in class. Tests will be frequent to insure that students read

MAKE-UP POLICY:

• Pop Quizzes are randomly scheduled at least once each unit and may consist of multiple-choice questions on unit content or on unit terminology. If missed, these no make-up (make sure that absence is excused). An alternative assignment may suffice and likely will consist of a four (4) full page of APA-cited paper.

• Tests and Quizzes must be made up after school, no make-ups will be given during class time. Tests must be made up within 48 hours. If a student does not make up examine within 48 hours upon returning to school, credit for make-up work will be withheld

School-wide attendance, tardy and academic honor code policies will be strictly enforced. Be sure you adhere to these at all times.

Welcome Letter

Dear Student:

Welcome to AP Psychology. It is my pleasure to start this year with you and help you in your journey to obtain Advanced Placement Credit for Psychology. Since I want everyone to get started in the right direction, I thought I would share a few hints to help you be successful in taking this course. This course is designed to introduce students to the systematic and scientific study of the behavior and mental processes of human beings and other animals. Students will be exposed to the psychological facts, principles, and phenomena associated with each of the major subfields within psychology. In this course, students will be expected to understand objective, empirical methods of collecting and interpreting data, make meaningful interconnection between disparate concepts and analyze, evaluate and critique thematic perspectives. A goal of this course is to provide students with a learning experience equivalent to that obtained in a college introductory psychology course.

We will be covering a lot of material this year, so a consistent schedule will be

particularly helpful. This way you will stay on top of the deadlines and have plenty of time to complete assignments and readings. This is a college level course that uses a college level textbook. You will be treated as responsible intellectuals and I will expect you to be serious about learning the ins and outs of what psychology is all about. Students will be expected to come to class prepared for the day’s lesson or exam, participate in class activities and discussions, and turn in all work on time. Organization, respect, and responsibility are crucial for success in this class. You must follow the reading schedule and be sure to stay with the class. I expect you to outline each chapter as you read and complete note cards and assignments accordingly. Make-up work is your responsibility. If you were in class the day an assignment was given, you will be expected to turn it in the day you return. You must come to class prepared.

Classroom meetings are essential and everyone is expected to contribute. Be

sure that you are familiar with the procedures for absences, sign-outs, etc. at Dr. Michael M Krop Senior High School and in relation to the Code of Ethics you will sign. Classes are aimed at complementing the readings and assignments, so careful and timely reading is the foundation to your success (and you do not need to bring your book to class but twice a year). Please ask for clarification on something you do not understand. The AP Psychology Website for my class will host much of the materials for class: the website address is http://kropseniorhigh.org I am looking forward to working and learning with you. Because I am committed to your success, I am available if you need assistance. Have a great year!
