AP Human Geography Summer Assignment 2017-2018
AP Human Geography Summer Assignment Adapted from Duval Schools
Introduction AP Human Geography is not a traditional geography class. Instead of learning about the locations of physical and political features, this course focuses on the interactions between humans and their environment and between human populations. As a prerequisite to the course, AP Human Geography students are expected to enter class with a basic understanding of the physical and political geography of the world - the locations of the continents and oceans, the arrangement of regions, and the locations of certain countries found within each of these regions.
Assignment Students are to identify, review, study, and memorize the locations of these physical and political arrangements and be able to pass an assessment of their knowledge of these arrangements during the first week of class.
Tips ● Each student should print the maps and place each one in a page protector. You will use these
maps extensively throughout the year. Bring these to class on Day 1.
● Sheppard Software is a great resource for learning and memorizing countries. Use the following link to access the website: Sheppard Software
○ Open the link and select the country or region you want to learn ○ Under the “Countries” column, find the middle option Level 1 - Beginner and click Play! ○ You will hear a voice say the name of a country - simply click on the country it asks for. If
you get it wrong, you will have two more chances before the program tells you where it is.
○ You can toggle between regions on the left side or do all of it at once. ○ The program will keep track of your stats. Your goal is 100% so keep redoing the region
before moving on. It is important that you continue to review these even after you reach your goal.
Assessment Students will take an assessment the first week of school on each of the maps included in the Summer Assignment. Students are required to score an 80% on the assessment to meet the minimum standard. Students who score below a 70% will be required to retake the exam until the minimum standard is achieved.
