NAME:________________________________________________ Ms. Wood & Ms. Baete AP ENGLISH LANGUAGE AND COMPOSITION SUMMER HOMEWORK Overview: Your summer homework for AP ENGLISH LANGUAGE & COMPOSITION is designed to get you ready to hit the ground running on the first day of school—this is an AP class and expectations and rigor are extremely high, that’s why it is imperative that you take the summer to prepare yourself. Failure to turn in this homework on the first day of class will result in a failing grade—there are no reassessments in AP English Language. Your assignment consists of two (2) parts: (1) you must read a book and complete a reader response log (It MAY NOT be a book you’ve previously read for a class: e.g. Their Eyes Were Watching God, Macbeth, Of Mice and Men, The Things They Carried, etc.) (2) you must keep up with THEMED Current Events and write summaries for 5 articles READER RESPONSE LOG ASSIGNMENT: DUE on the first day of school Follow these simple steps the book that you choose from the list attached (We encourage you to choose one of these books. If you want to pick something not on the list, please reach out to us in advance for permission. If you need help getting your hands on the book, just ask us! We would love to help—as long as it’s not the week before school!!) STEP 1: Divide your chosen book from the list attached into four parts/sections. STEP 2: After you finish reading each fourth, write a reader response/reader reaction to that section. These responses should EACH be between one to two pages (approx. 450-1000 words), typed, double-spaced, 12-point font, Times New Roman or Arial, 1” margins. Please do not write a plot summary—DO THIS FOR EACH OF YOUR 4 SECTIONS. Naturally, you will include necessary background/context information, but I want to read your reactions to what is happening. You may choose to focus on the author's tone, purpose, subject, intended audience, and/or point of view. Be on the lookout for rhetorical situations; that is, how the author connects to the audience and for what purpose. Or, you can focus on things you relate to or find interesting in the reading. At the beginning of each reader response, STAMP what you’ve read so far. Overview: Your summer homework for AP ENGLISH LANGUAGE & COMPOSITION is designed to

CURRENT EVENTS ASSIGNMENT: DUE ON THE FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL

It's very important that you become aware of what's happening in the world today so that you

have some kind of repertoire to draw on when writing your papers. Allusions make you a

stronger more credible writer. Therefore, you will be asked to pick one of the topics below and

collect FIVE news articles about the subject. You will need to make sure that the articles are

from trusted news sources (newspapers or news publications/organizations like The Washington

Post, The Atlantic, The Economist, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Time,

Newsweek, etc.). If it is NOT from a reputable source, it will not count!

Print the articles out and write a 150-200 word summary for each article (typed, double-

spaced).

send me an email asking if you can focus on it instead. There is flexibility here. But you must find

at least five articles for whatever topic you eventually settle on.

Again, these assignments will be worth a hefty portion of your grade when you return. Failure

to complete will most likely result in failure for the first 6-weeks because the class will only

become more rigorous from there. REMEMBER, IN 12TH GRADE, THERE ARE NO REASSESSMENTS.

With this in mind, if you have any questions or run in to any issues, please be proactive and e-

mail your teacher to discuss whatever it is that you need!
