Assessments

Quizzes may be given at any time and may be announced or unannounced.

Tests will have half of points from multiple choice questions and half of points from free-response essay questions. Incomplete answers and sentence fragments will detract from scores. The AP test in the spring is the final assessment for the course.

All labs listed in this document are hands-on, student-performed labs. All AP Laboratory assignments will include lab reports and will follow the format outlined below. Special labs that are not part of the AP Laboratory Manual may be assigned. These may be followed by graphical representation of data and discussion.

Special readings in addition to the texts above may be assigned, and these assignments may be followed by discussions, reports, and quizzes.

Self-assessments at the end of each chapter may not be graded but are excellent guides for study and review.

Missed assignments are to be made up according to school policy as outlined in the school handbook. Late work is not acceptable. Reports are due according to instructor’s timeline.

Lab Reports

I. Introduction – Tell the reader what the topic and goal of the experiment are. a. Overview – This section includes background information and

explanation. DO NOT COPY THE INFORMATION from your laboratory manual, but do use that information to give you ideas of what information to include.

b. Purpose – Clearly state the reason for the experiment. c. Hypothesis – State what results you expected from the experiment.

II. Procedurea. Equipment used – Tell the reader about equipment and how it was used. b. Data – Tell the reader how you obtained data.

III. Results – Present data in labeled graphs, labeled tables, etc. Verbally describe what the data tells you.

IV. Discussiona. Hypothesis is supported or not supported – Do not say that the hypothesis

was proven. The data from one experiment only supports or fails to support the hypothesis.

b. Explanation – Explain why you think you got the results in your results section.

c. Conclusion – Explain what you learned.

Fees

1. There is a $30 laboratory fee. Checks can be made payable to SJCC.2. The AP exam is $84. Checks can be made payable to SJCC and we will order the tests.
