downs, jigs, reels and waltzes, ending with the Don Messerclassic “Smile A While” (or ‘Til We Meet Again), to astanding ovation.

Vern Bailey, Auctioneer Extraordinaire, then took over toauction off a number of donated items, raising a total of$1,800 for MMHA, and giving the audience gales of fun andlaughter while so doing.

Then came the night’s second musical act, ‘North of theBorder’. These boys “had game” and they brought it to theLegion! Later in their set, slowing down the pace a little, theydid a wistful ballad ‘Heaven’s Got an Angel’, which theydedicated to the family of the late Marg Kent, and all whohave suffered the tragic loss of a loved one.

At the end of their set, the boys couldn’t get off the stage, asrequests came in from the audience, accompanied by addi-tional donations to MMHA for popular singer/guitaristNick Porco to perform some ‘favourite’ songs. Althoughunrehearsed, the band admirably rose to the occasion oneach number, eventually “escaping” from the hot stage, savedby the arrival of MMHA Vice-Chair and Fundraising ChairJohn Shannon.

“On behalf of the Fundraising Committee of the MMHAssociation” said John,” I want to say a heartfelt Thank You

to the Sponsors of our auction items and to the buyers; toVernon Bailey for his auctioneer expertise; to NatashaBomhof and her team of Volunteers for the luncheon and tothose who baked or donated food items; to the Volunteerswho helped tonight; to Brian and Heather Fox who co-ordi-nated the music program and advertising; and, to all themusicians who played tonight. Most of all, to each of you forcoming out to support your MMH Association once again!”he continued. “Together, one day at a time, one dollar at atime, one event at a time, we will restore and rebuild the levelof health care provided for our catchment area. Thank You!”

Following a brief intermission, the music continued with thenight’s third act, the Pudge City Potlickers. Although we can’tsay for sure, many of the group’s members somehow lookeddistinctly familiar. The ‘Potlickers’ offered up a medley of‘classic country’ tunes, featuring the likes of Hank Williams,Merle Haggard and several tunes harkening back to themountain music of the 1930s and 1940s, and with the audi-ence joining in, ending with a stirring rendition of the hymn“I’ll Fly Away”.

Aside from the food and music, there were definitely somegreat memories made that night, including one very specialmoment when Brian Read and his wife Cathy, who for yearshas steadfastly refused to surrender to debilitating cancer, gotup to join the dancers on the dance floor!

IT IS THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE OWNER TO OBTAIN A BUILDING PERMIT IT IS ILLEGAL TO START WORK WITHOUT A PERMIT

Building permits are not required for work such as the installation of siding, soffit or fascia, the replacement of shinglesor windows, provided structural changes are not involved, or for separate structures occupying an area of 10 square metres or less (approximately 108 square feet) - unless such building involves plumbing – then a permit is necessary. A Reminder Notice to RATEPAYERS in Hilton Townshipand

to all CONTRACTORS working within Hilton Township

Most types of construction or renovations undertaken require building permits. These permits must beobtained PRIOR to the commencement of work. The penalty for starting construction without first obtainingthe permit is double the permit fee.

DID YOU KNOW?A Municipality is required by law to provide a building inspection service for the protection of its residentsWhile the intent of the service is to be cost-recovery, Hilton Township continues to subsidize building permitfees in an effort to keep them affordableThe permit fee covers the cost of inspections that will provide assurance to ratepayers their structures havebeen built according to the requirements of the Ontario Building Code ActObtaining a permit after construction has begun (includes pouring a concrete pad) means vital early inspec-tions have not been performed – the work already completed may need to be dismantled to allow a thoroughinspection OR an engineer’s review may be required, resulting in additional costsIf a ratepayer is hiring a contractor to perform the work, the ratepayer and the contractor are both responsiblefor ensuring the necessary permits have been obtained (Entrance Permit/Building Permit/Algoma HealthPermit)The Building Inspector can only sign off on any construction when he is assured the structure has been builtto Code – that is for his protection, the Municipality’s and especially for the Ratepayer

Permit Fees: $25.00 for first $1,000 of value and $5.00 for each additional $1,000 of value (Values based onper square foot calculations included in the Municipality’s Fees and Charges By-law)

Examples of Permit Costs: Dwelling – Full Basement (1200 sq ft) = $560Dwelling – Slab on Ground (1200 sq ft) = $470Garage – Finished Inside (400 sq ft) = $110Garage – Unfinished Inside (400 sq ft) = $70Deck – Uncovered (400 sq ft) = $40

Island InsightOn Saturday, June 23, 2012 at 12:45 as my husband, grand-daughter and I were returning from Kentvale, we were almostin a collision with a white truck with a red tank in the box atthe junction of the A and I Line.

The driver failed to stop at the stop sign (near the HarmonyTea House). He never even looked to see if traffic was comingdown the A Line before pulling out. My husband slammed onthe brakes, narrowly avoiding a collision, causing all of us tobe thrown forward violently against our seatbelts. My grand-daughter’s legs were scratched badly when her Pom puppywas thrown from her lap onto the floor.

Whoever you are, you need to know that people were hurtbecause of your stupidity and all you did was calmly driveaway with your arm dangling out your window as if nothinghappened.

This is not the first time! In fact, similar ‘almost’ accidentshave happened several times to us this year alone! There maynot be a lot of traffic on the Island at any given time, but thatdoes not mean drivers are exempt from following basicdriving rules. Stopping at a stop sign and looking both waysbefore proceeding is one of the most basic rules to follow.

Please Islanders, use some common sense when driving ourbeautiful country roads. I do not believe any of us want tointentionally cause harm to another person.
