MANY PEOPLE DOUBTEDthat it could be done. Theidea of a school raising$25,000 for new playgroundequipment in just 6 months,in a sluggish economy andwith so much ‘competition’from other worthy causes, just seemed like too much tohope for.
The Island Central School’sParent/Teacher Grouphowever, didn’t back awayfrom their ambitious goal.Instead, they made someequally ambitious plans forreaching their goal. Theyplanned the work, workedthat plan, and the planworked!
“At the moment we’ve raisedapproximately $30,000 withmore donations coming in.”reports a happy PrincipalDon Nadeau. “This is areflection of the generosityof the St Joseph IslandCommunity and beyond. The support has been tremendous.”
“The Fundraising committee, led by chair Trevor Stinson, hasbeen very dedicated to this cause and has invested manyhours to see this project come into fruition.” he continued.
Trevor and his Committee are equally delighted. “As acommittee we are very excited about having reached and
surpassed our goal. Wecannot adequatelyexpress our gratitudetowards the communityfor their generosity, which will be enjoyed bymany generations of ourchildren. The children atSt. Joseph Island CentralSchool are blessed to beraised in such a caringand compassionatearea.” he beamed.
So what’s next? Mr.Nadeau tells us “Ourattention will now beturning to the erectionof our new playgroundequipment, which willbe happening hopefullyin the latter part of May.Also ADSB will bespending $275,000 onour new parking lot, sidewalks and pathwayson our school grounds. Most of the work for thisconstruction will be
done this summer. This is like a “schoolyard makeover”!
“We are very excited about this and hope to see all the parentsbecome involved when we have the building day andbarbeque this spring.” he continued. “Look for more informa-tion soon”.

A Little Gold Bar That Speaks Volumes!LAST MONTH, PIERRE MARCEAU took a brief but impor-tant trip down Highway 17, to hang out with good friendsand relive some very vivid memories, both good and bad. Sohow is that newsworthy? Here’s why! Sergeant PierreMarceau, along with close to 400 other Canadian soldiers, was being honoured at a very special Medals ceremony atCFB Petawawa.
The ceremony marked a fairly rare event in Canadian mili-tary history: the awarding of a ‘Commander-in-Chief UnitCitation’ to the First Battalion of the Royal Canadian Regi-ment Battle Group, for its heroic efforts in ‘OperationMedusa’ back in 2006.
Historically, while individual soldiers may be singled out forspecial recognition of acts of bravery, etc., it’s not often thatan entire battalion is so honoured. A NATO Battalion isusually 2 to 6 companies of 300 to 1,000 soldiers, under thecommand of a Lieutenant Colonel. Two or more battalions, plus headquarters and supportunits, comprise a Regiment.
Although much of the story isonly now coming out, ‘1 RCR’fought against incredible oddsand a fierce, fanatical enemy, saving the Kandahar City areafrom being overrun by Talibaninsurgents. They set the templatefor other Canadian soldiers tofollow, as Canada’s ‘mission’ inAfghanistan evolved from ‘peace-keeping’ to an all-out combatrole.
And, as a shooting war, ‘Opera-tion Medusa’ was the real deal. Inthree intense days of non-stopfighting, ‘1 RCR’ fired almost asmany artillery shells as were firedduring the entire Korean ‘conflict’.There aren’t even any official esti-
mates given on the number of bullets expended, withconstant re-supply of ammunition, food and water broughtin by wave after wave of helicopters – they too under Talibanfire.
The Unit Citation is awarded by Canada’s Governor General, who acts as the Commander-in-Chief of Canada’s ArmedForces. It is awarded only in recognition of “an extraordinarydeed or activity of a rare high standard in extremelyhazardous circumstances” and is restricted to war or war-likeconditions in an active theatre of operation.
The official insignia of the Citation is a gold bar with theVice-Regal lion in full colour. The bar may be worn in perpe-tuity by each member of the battle group who was involvedin the mission, and by others while serving with 1 RCR.
The Unit Citation reads “During August and September of2006 the 1st Battalion, Royal Canadian Regiment Battle
Group played a decisive role in one ofthe largest ground combat operationsin the history of NATO.”
“Deployed to an area of Afghanistanwith fierce enemy resistance andextremely difficult terrain, themembers of the Battle Groupresolutely defeated a well co-ordi-nated insurgent force in the areasurrounding Kandahar City.”
“Succeeding where larger forces hadfailed, they prevented the enemy fromrealizing their goals and capturing thecity and weakening internationalresolve and cohesion.”
“The last sentence will probably beCanada’s legacy in southernAfghanistan,” said Brigadier-GeneralFred Lewis, deputy commander of thebattle group at the time of the

mission. “Holding the line with a relatively small force, when others couldn’t orweren’t willing.”
That sounds remarkably like every major battle in Canada’s long and proud militaryhistory … and like those others, it’s probably a huge under-statement!
Born and raised on St. Joseph Island, Sergeant Marceau was one of the first fourlocal reservists to volunteer for active duty in Afghanistan. He has been followed bymany others since. On completing his tour, he returned home safely in March 2007and is now once again serving with the 49th Field Artillery Regiment, based in SaultSte. Marie.
He still sheds his uniform from time to time, to visit his Island friends and hisparents Joanne and Denis Marceau, owners of the Island Bakery and Café. Actually,Joanne and Denis are the proud parents of not one, but TWO young military men!Their oldest son Patrick, an Air Force Sergeant, is currently serving as a CanadianForces Recruiter in Kitchener, Ontario.
‘1 RCR’ is still in Afghanistan, specializing in counter-insurgency missions in thevolatile Kandahar Region. But it’s not all about shoot-em-ups! They not onlyprovide security for reconstruction projects, they co-ordinate and spearhead theseefforts, building new schools and digging new village wells, not to mention theconstruction of the largest road built by the Canadian military since Korea.
That’s perhaps an accomplishment that vastly outweighs any battle! It’s often muchharder to win the ‘peace’ than the ‘war’, but you can’t do the former without firstaccomplishing the latter. We think that Pierre and the Marceau family understandthat principle only too well.
Civilians seeing Sergeant Pierre Marceau in uniform may not understand the signif-icance of that little gold bar on his jacket; but anymember of Canada’s (or NATO’s) Armed Forceswill immediately know that they’re in the presenceof not just a warrior, but someone who has beenpart of something that’s perhaps infinitely greater!
Congratulations, Pierre! Well done, Sergeant!

Tracing Your Family HistoryThrough the Census via the
Internet:By Barbara Davies, St. Joseph Island Historical Society
CANADIAN CENSUS RECORDS are available for the years1851/2, 1861, 1871, 1881, 1891, 1901 and 1911, and all aresearchable on the Internet. There is also a separate search-able data base available for 1906 covering the BritishColumbia, Alberta and Alberta Provinces. All of these areavailable on www.Ancestry.com and can be accessed at theHilton Beach and Richards Landing Libraries (at nosubscription fee).
The free website www.automatedgenealogy.com also hasCanadian censuses indices for the years 1852CA, 1851NB,1901, 1906 and 1911. You can search by Province, and thenby District or County, then by Surname. Or you can do aSurname Search in each District or County, which allowsyou to check out spelling variants of the surname you aresearching. In the 1901 Census, for instance, only basic infor-mation has been transcribed, i.e., Name, Sex, Relationship,Single/Married/Widowed, Month, Day & Year of Birth. Youcan, however, view the actual census page to obtain moreinformation by using the split screen option, or directlythrough the link to the National Archives Website located atthe top of the page.
If your family emigrated from the United Kingdom, theEnglish/Wales censuses are available from 1841, 1851, 1861,1871, 1881, 1891 and 1901 and also searchable at our Islandlibraries on the Ancestry.com site. Or you might trywww.genealogylinks.net (free) and choose UK & Ireland.Under this link, the censuses for England, Scotland & Walesare available. There are a lot of other interesting links on thissite also.
US census records are also available from 1790 thru 1930 atAncestry.com, with the exception of 1890 which wasdestroyed by fire. Only partial records and a very smallamount are available for that year. Sometimes, Island fami-lies moved back and forth between Michigan and Algoma, and if you can’t find them in a particular year, try the UScensuses.
If the family history your have already collected can placeyour family within the census years available, the first one tostart with would be the 1901 census. This census will giveyour all the members still living together, their completebirth dates and ages, sex and nationality, relationship withthe head of the family, whether single, married or widowed, birthplace, year of immigration if applicable, race, nation-ality, religion and profession. The year of birth may be off by

a year, however, depending on what time ofyear the census was taken. And there is also thepossibility that the individual fudged a bit onthe year of birth. The correct year can be veri-fied later by obtaining birth records.
From the l901 census you can trace backwardsthru previous censuses to determine where andwhen the family lived before coming to St.Joseph Island. If the immigration year columnwas filled in, you can determine what censusyear they should first appear. If you are luckyenough to know the exact county in Englandthey came from, you can switch to the Englishcensuses, and continue backwards. This couldgive you access to information on familymembers who remained in England, Wales,Scotland or Ireland. However, there is not a lotof information available online yet on Scotlandor Ireland, and this takes a little more creativesearching. If you don’t know the county inEngland, you can still search, but you will havea lot more records to go through in order toindentify the correct family.
German census records are very rare as thecountry’s nationwide censuses were to beconducted on a state-wide level and this wasonly required nationally after 1871. Addition-ally, all original census records under EasternGermany were destroyed. There are two areasof German censuses available on Ancestry.comat this time. First, the city of Lubeck/Luebecklocated in northern Germany, for the year1857. It is the largest German port on the BalticSea. The second area is the state of Mecklen-burg-Schwerin, also in northern Germany, which covers the census years of 1819, 1867,1890 and 1900. If you know your family camefrom this area, it would be worth a search.Other ways to search in Germany will becovered in a future article.
The Latter-Day-Saints website www.family-search.org also has census information, but ithas so much more. I will cover searching thissite in another article. The site’s information isfree, but you are now required to register toobtain access to their information.
The information found in the census recordscan then lead to other areas of research. Mynext article will cover searching for andobtaining records for births, marriages anddeaths via the internet.

WE’VE ALL HEARD themany rumours and reportedsightings of Mountain Lions,Cougars, Bobcats and such, here on the Island. That’spretty exciting stuff to most, but Jocelyn Township residentsFelice and Kitty Felino don’treally understand what all thefuss is about.
“Haven’t you ever seen atypical Jocelyn ‘Mountain’housecat?” they ask. Actually, this rather special breed is offi-cially known as the AlgerianHumungo Cat. “So where didthey come from?” we asked.“Well, duh! Maybe fromAlgeria!” Felice offers testily.OK, so maybe that wasn’t thesmartest question I’ve everasked.
Kitty is much more graciousthan her somewhat boorishhusband, who we’ve secretlynever really liked. “We’ve beenbreeding them for several yearsnow.” she smiles. “Humungos are actually a domestic breed, but are rarely seen away fromJocelyn Township. We make a fortune shipping these cats to
owners in New York and otherlarge cities around the world. They’re great for getting rid ofvermin!”
“So, aside from vermin, what doyou feed an Algerian HumungoCat?” we asked. “Well, they eat allthe usual things that cats like, butof course, they eat a lot more!Luckily, they love fish. If we hadn’tbeen able to fish for pike in thelake, we would have been in thepoor house long ago!” Feliceexclaims.
“Our favourite, ‘Teeny’ likes tosleep on the bed with us at night, but sometimes her purring is soloud it wakes us up.” smiles Kitty.“And, being licked in the morningby one of these felines is ashocking wake up call.”
Of course, lovers of these cats havetheir own, unique problems.“They make a heck of a messwhen they scratch in their litterbox, so you really need to keep thebox outside. And try emptying thelitter box after more than a fewdays have gone by!” exclaimsFelice. “And you can’t just use
them as ‘barn cats’, since once they’ve workedthrough all the mice and other pests, they’ll beeyeing your dogs, cattle and horses!”
“We’ve decided to declaw Teeny (pictured herewith her Vet, Dr. Caterina ‘Cat’ Inahat) since sheoutgrew her scratching post and discovered howmuch fun it is to tear chunks of wood from everywindow sill in our house, not to mention the skinfrom my arms!” whispers Kitty. “And, you reallydon’t want to be anywhere NEAR the Veterinarianwhen these guys come in for their shots!”
So what is it about Jocelyn Township that thesestrange cats do so well here? Is it the water? Theair? No one really knows.
Isn’t it strange how these stories keep popping upright around ‘April Fool’s Day’?

THANK YOU
The Anglican Partish of St.Joseph and St. George wouldlike to thank the many folks fromthe island and the north shorewho came to the Legion lastFriday night to see the play, InMy Shoes. Their generosityresulted in almost $500 and alarge quantity of food beingcollected for our local food bank. Thanks also to the RCL Branch374 for co-sponsoring the eventand for the delicious supperwhich quite a few of us tookadvantage of before the play. And finally a huge thank you tothe folks from the Soup KitchenCommunity Centre in Sault SteMarie for coming on a Fridayevening and for sharing theirstories in such an honest andforthright manner. They touchedeveryone in the hall and put aface on poverty that we seldomsee.
The family of Rita Johnstoneextend their heartfelt thanks toall her friends and neighboursfor all their cards, flowers, dona-tions and kind words. She was agracious lady with a smile on herface and a melody in her heart. There is now “Peace in theValley” for a wonderful motherand great friend. Special thanksto Jim Tulloch, Island BibleChapel ladies, Great NorthernNursing Home and ArthurFuneral Home.
We wish to extend our thanks tothe many friends and relativeswho were so supportive whenwe lost our darling mother, AliceTrainor. I’m as small as an ant, as big as a whale. I’llapproach like a breeze, but can come like a gale. Bysome I get hit, but all have shown fear. I’ll dance to
the music even though I can’t hear. Of names I have many of, names I have one. I can be as slow as a snail, but from me you
can’t run. What am I?
