Alvah Scott Elementary School 2

Aloha Alvah Scott Ohana, Welcome back for another exciting educational year! We are ready to start with our new Wonders and Stepping Stones curriculum. Many of our teachers have been very busy attending summer trainings and workshops, and running our fantastic summer intersession program. As always we focus on educating the whole child at Alvah Scott to get them physically, mentally and academically fit for the future. This year our Academies will focus on science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) in combination with following the worldwide voyages of the Hokulea and the Hikianalia. These Polynesian voyaging canoes are sailing across Earth’s oceans to join and grow the global movement toward a more sustainable world. Covering 47,000 nautical miles, 85 ports, and 26 countries, the Malama Honua Worldwide Voyage will highlight diverse cultural and natural treasures and the importance of working together to protect them. The Malama Honua Worldwide Voyage began in 2013 with a Malama Hawaiʻi sail around our archipelago, and will continue through 2017 when our new generation of navigators take the helm and guide Hokule‘a and Hikianalia back to Polynesia after circumnavigating the globe. The Hawaiian name for this voyage, Malama Honua, means “to care for our Earth.” Living on an island chain teaches us that our natural world is a gift with limits and that we must carefully steward this gift if we are to survive together. As we work to protect cultural and environmental resources for our children’s future, our Pacific voyaging traditions teach us to venture beyond the horizon to connect and learn with others. The Worldwide Voyage is a means by which we now engage all of Island Earth—practicing how to live sustainably, while sharing, learning, creating global relationships, and discovering the wonders of this precious place we all call home. www.hokulea.com. I hope you can see how our school theme of "Journey with the Hokulea and Hikianalia" will bring exciting educational opportunities on so many levels to our school community and especially to our children. WHAT IS PSAP? PSAP stand for the Primary School Adjustment Project. It is a program designed to help young students in grades K-3 to get comfortable within the school setting. PSAP believes that children express themselves best through play and it invites them to participate in a wide range of activities. One primary goal of the program is to build bridges between children and their peers, parents, and teachers. My name is Ms. Manini and I am the PSAP person. I work really close with our school counselor. If there are any questions about PSAP, please call me at 483-7220 ext. 250

PARENT TEACHER ASSOCIATION (PTA) Are you interested in supporting the education of students at Alvah Scott? Would you like to support the teachers and their classrooms at Alvah Scott? Would you be interested in having events and activities that strengthen the ties between our school, our families, and our community? Is so, consider supporting the Alvah Scott Parent Teacher Association. The PTA needs your help in many different ways to continue the wonderful events such as; movie night, bingo night, fall festival, and the fun run. With your help the PTA will be able to continue supporting students and teachers by purchasing items such as computers, fans, and classroom supplies, as well as subsidizing classroom events and helping pay for buses for field trips. If you are interested in supporting our students, please contact Sharon Browne, librarian and PTA vice-president, at 483-7224.

WE COULD USE YOUR HELP IN THE LIBRARY

We could sure use some artistic parent volunteers to help with the Book Fair decorations in October. The theme is knights and castles. I have some ideas, but no artistic skills! Thank you, Mrs Sharon Browne
