Building for Our Future
The Atchison County Community Education Foundation seeks your generosity to support a
new, exciting project for our schools. They are organizing an initiative to build an 8,000+
square foot multi-purpose addition to the junior-senior high school. The addition consists of
three specific spaces with the bonus of added storage. This project will be completely funded
through donations with no effect on property tax. We are counting on the generosity of devot-
ed community members, loyal ACCHS alumni, and concerned individuals near and far to
make this successful. Our students and staff deserve safe and modern facilities to learn,
grow, and teach.
The construction of the addition will lead the way for all students to be on one campus. This
addition will free up space elsewhere that can be converted into classrooms and office
spaces. Being on one campus will greatly reduce the distraction that our youngest students
experience from having to be bussed between buildings as well as will allow them to feel like
they are a part of our elementary school. Below you will find additional information about the
project and how you can help.

We are just finishing up our Homecoming Week and will soon be in the month of Octo-ber. The days are growing shorter even though the heat doesn’t really want to let up too much. The leaves on the trees are chang-ing and starting to drop. Bonfires and hay-rack rides are being planned and the month will end with Halloween trick or treating. Time goes by and we work to help our stu-dents enjoy the valuable experience that school brings to them. Attending school gives us all a chance to make mistakes, learn from them, try again, or even start over. We see our high school students, especially our seniors and juniors recognize how much they have to do before earning that diploma. Earning a diploma means so much more than learning facts and figures. Our students from the 7th grade through the 12th grade have to learn about persistence, getting along well with others, and figuring out how to solve problems from small to large. As I see it, mistakes in the life of a student can be categorized in four ways: (1) Absurd—those things that just happen that you sure didn’t plan to happen. Maybe you have tripped on your own feet or made a wrong turn and ended up in a hallway that you didn’t expect—if so you’ve experienced an absurd mistake. (2) Simple—maybe you just didn’t plan well enough in advance. Students often make simple mistakes by not planning to spend enough time on an assignment or not devoting enough time for homework before sleep overcomes you at night. (3) Involved—it takes some effort to make this type of mistake, but it’s one that often creeps right up on you before you even real-ize it happens. Students who frequently avoid preparing for class, stay out late at night socializing, spend too much time on a social network or gaming site, or repeatedly miss school without making up their work. (4) Complex—a dreadful mistake that has a long term effect on you such as investing time and money in a relationship that is not healthy or plagiarizing a major essay rather than doing honest work to learn from au-thoring the essay yourself. In an average day at school, students are faced with many decisions that they have to
make. Sometimes those decisions aren’t so good, but failure and mistakes help us to learn what we don’t want to happen the next time. Parents can help students to mature and grow by helping their students to recog-nize signs of failure and to know that it is alright at times. Help students to develop their self-confidence by admitting failure and mistakes and also to become more cou-rageous when changes in behavior need to happen. Sure it is difficult to stand back and watch some mistakes happen. Some-times the heartaches and agony are harder on parents than it is on students. We really appreciate the hard work that par-ents put into the lives of their students. As we continue on our quest to challenge our students, provide opportunity, build success and character, and create excellence, we de-pend on parents and patrons to help devel-op our school culture. We want to help our students to Be Their Best! Have a great month of October and the fall season upon us.

PARENTS AS TEACHERS
Your child does not recognize the
dangers inside and outside of your
home. You can create a safe and nur-
turing environment for him and modi-
fy it as he grows and develops. Par-
ents as Teachers can be a resource to
help you keep your child safe.
If you are pregnant or have a child
under 3, please contact Elize Cilliers
at (620) 388-1825 for more infor-
mation about this free program.

The first 9 weeks of Kindergarten have been excit-
ing and busy. The students are continuing to
learn and focus on classroom expectations as well
as being respectful and responsible in the class-
room. This year we continue teaching Pathways to
Reading, which focuses on letters, sounds and
sight words. The letters and sounds we have
learned so far are: m, n, f, v, p, and b. We have
learned 15 sight words so far and we are well on
our way to making our goal of knowing over 50
sight words for the year! This Pathways program
will continue to introduce students to new letters
and sounds throughout the year to increase each
students’ phonemic awareness. We have been
focusing on letter formation in writing. We are
currently working on uppercase letters. Students
have been working hard in math learning to
represent and count numbers 1-10 as well as
comparing sets. This month we will dive into the
exciting world of addition! Science and Social
Studies subjects have had our students focusing
on Earth Science as well as Roles and Responsibil-
ities.
We are looking forward to our class Halloween
party and parade this month. Be sure to check out
some of our recent artwork at the Effingham
Senior Center this month!
