From the Pastor’s Desk

Impending Doom, or not?!? My dear friends in Christ, I have heard much these days about the Corona Virus. I know you have as well. There have been some pretty dramatic actions taken on the part of local and national governments to help alleviate and get a handle on the situation. In these types of situations, finding a balance between overreaction and prudent caution can be quite difficult. Let’s allow the Word of God to speak into this situation, at least to the fear that we might be experiencing in the midst of this: “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat [or drink], or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food and the body more than clothing?... But seek first the kingdom [of God] and his righteousness, and all these things will be given you besides. Do not worry about tomorrow; tomorrow will take care of itself.” (Mt 6: 25,33). Here our Lord is telling us that He will provide for our needs in this life. It is God’s continual promise to us. Our foremost focus must be the pursuit of God’s kingdom (a life of holiness). In our present case, it is obviously the basic need of our health that is being threatened by this virus. Recalling the above exhortation from the Lord, would he not be saying to us, “Don’t worry, I will take care of you”? Even if the Lord were to allow us to catch the virus, is that reason for us to live with excessive fear? Would not our Lord still provide everything that we needed in order to either be healed of it or to have every grace that we would need to be prepared to meet Him in heaven? In the face of these fears which so often are exacerbated by the media, how important for us Christians to continue to remember that nothing happens without the Lord’s permission! We can trust Him. This is our difficult yet liberating calling. We listen to the Word of God again: “I have the strength for everything through him who empowers me” (Phil 4:13). Here St. Paul is describing the capacity he has to endure whatever comes his way due to his relationship with Jesus Christ. Therefore, whether sick or healthy, poor or rich, naked or clothed, hungry or well-fed, St. Paul says that he has learned how to be content in it all. Wow! Would that we all could learn this! The key is to remain close to Christ. Indeed, “cast all your worries upon him because he cares for you” (1 Pt 5:7). So, can we find a balance in facing today’s Corona Virus situation? Prudent caution without excessive fear, realism without panic, facing the unknown while completely trusting in God…? Know that we have and will continue to implement various precautions in order to help keep all of us healthy here at the parish. Please, join me in prayer for all who have been affected by this virus and that God may bring it to an end. We pray as well for the grace needed to trust in Him at this time. With paternal love, Fr. Stiles God bless, Fr. Sandquist

Sacramental Life

The crisis of abortion is enormous. Abortion takes the lives of an estimated 40 million people every year. It is the leading cause of death in the world. To combat this tragedy of epidemic proportions, four individuals in Bryan/College Station, TX in 2007 started praying to end abortion. By God’s grace, “40 Days for Life" was born. It has since grown into a movement of international proportions that includes 950 cities and 63 countries.

“40 Days for Life" is a peaceful initiative consisting of 40 days of prayer and fasting, peaceful vigils at abortion facilities and an educational outreach with the goal of protecting mothers and their babies from abortion. Each year the spring campaign coincides with the 40 days of Lent, this year February 26 - April 5. There is also a fall campaign. In fact, our pro-life team has prayed in front the Planned Parenthood on Victory Dr. in Mankato during fall campaigns. As “40 Days for Life” keeps growing, Planned Parenthood keeps shrinking. How effective are the campaigns? To date over 1,600 babies saved; nearly 200 abortion workers quit; 196 abortion facilities closed.

If we cannot join a vigil, we can do our part by continuing to pray and fast for the end of abortion. (Source: 40daysforlife.com)

The next Pro-Life Team meeting will take place at 1PM on Monday, March 16, 2020

at the home of Joyce Traxler.

May 1 - August 31, 2020 Ministry Schedule

Please contact Gloria, [email protected] (or call the parish office 357-6633) by Monday, March 23 with dates that you are unable to serve for the May 1-August 31, 2020 ministry schedule. This schedule includes Mother’s Day (May 10), Memorial Day (May 25), Father’s Day (June 21), Parish Festival (June 28) & July 4. August 15, The Assumption of Mary, is not a Holy Day of Obligation this year. However, we will have a 9AM Mass on Saturday, August 15. Dates that you cannot serve are entered into the ministry scheduling software.

Without that information you may be scheduled on dates that you are not available. If you are able to serve on any of the above dates, that is also very helpful. Thank you!

If you have been thinking about joining the Liturgical Ministry Team as a Lector, Usher, or Eucharistic Minister, now would be the time as we put together the May-August schedule. If you should have any questions or would like some training, feel free to contact the parish office or talk with one of the priests. What talent has God given you to serve His Church?

GLOBAL SOLIDARITY SUNDAY - This year the theme is, “…I was blind and now I see” (Jn. 9:25).

As we reach out in solidarity to our brothers and sisters around the world, we let our light shine for those who still hunger and thirst for God’s mercy, love and healing. On the weekend of March 21/22, a special collection will be taken for four global priorities of the U.S. Catholic Bishops: Africa, Latin America, Central and Eastern Europe, as well as humanitarian activities of Catholic Relief Services. Please be as generous as you are able and let your light shine for your brothers and sisters around the world. Thank you. For your convenience we have attached an envelope to this weekend’s bulletin for you to place your contribution. The envelopes can be dropped in the weekly collection basket or at the parish office.
