ConsiderationsIn this evidence collection, I am showing the domain create.

I chose work from my 8th grade class. I see my 8th grade class everyday for 55 minutes.

Pre-assessment was given before the lesson, where I asked the students to “draw YOU”.

During the lesson we looked at a PowerPoint showing creative and expressive self portraits. We talked about how we can show something about ourselves

through the colors used, symbols, and what is pictured. We talked about showing emotions, memories, aspirations, and interests. We viewed and

discussed several creative self portraits from other students from around the country, as well as famous artists. We talked about how they are not just simply showing the viewer what they looked like, but telling the viewer a story about their life. We talked about different ways we could be more

creative with our self portraits next time. Post assessment was done after the lesson. Students learned how to draw the

face and facial features. Students were then instructed to “draw YOU”. Students added anything they wanted to express something or to tell a story

to the viewer in a creative way.Exemplar

Lesson Overview:In this lesson students learned to use art to express

themselves and tell a story through their art. We learned the proportions of the face, and we learned different ways to make our self portraits expressive and able to

convey a message creatively. Whether its through color, symbols, and what is pictured. We want to communicate

to the viewer something about ourselves and to tell a story, not just show the viewer what we look like.

Objective:To be able to draw a self portrait in a creative and

expressive way. Use color and symbols to show the viewer something about ourselves. Students were

instructed to show likes or dislikes, emotions, memories, or aspirations in a creative way. Exemplar

The SpEd student kept her self portrait very simple. Nothing

can be seen that would let you know something about her.

After the lesson, the SPED student’s self portrait is colorful and vibrant. Her interests

are visible and the self portrait conveys something about her, for example, her love

of flowers and the color purple!

Emerging StudentPre-Assessment Post-Assessment

The emerging student’s pre assessment self portrait is simply a picture of what she looks like, but left out her body (neck and

shoulders).

After the lesson, the emerging student’s took into consideration the different ways to show her likes

and interests, and got creative with it! In her hair are things that she had “gotten into” that day, and are now stuck in her hair. Around her neck is a horse

pendant, she loves horses.

The proficient student’s pre-assessment self portrait shows

nothing about her interests and is not creatively drawn.

After the lesson, the student’s self portrait is much more informative and tells a story in a creative way. In the

sunglasses you see an aspiration of hers for her future. Behind her you can see her walking away from a memory

that she has. This student creatively shows a past and future in one picture.

Advanced StudentPre-Assessment Post-Assessment

The advanced student’s self portrait is lacking in expressive and creative

qualities. However she drew her hair to represent her personality and her

interest in the style of other eras.

After the lesson, the student shows not only interests, which are stuck in her hair. But she uses

zoomorphic qualities (her cat ears) to show her love and connection with the “pets” in her hair.

Her Lace collar and necklace shows the style and era of time that she likes and appreciates.

Growth!

By the end of this lesson 100% of the students showed growth. Their self portraits were much more creative and conveyed a message or story to the viewer. The students were able to think about themselves as people and put a piece of themselves into their self portrait. They were

able to go beyond just drawing what they look like, but creatively tell their story through a
